I'm on Fresh whatever that means, I take it to be the Fresh food section. I'm Full time & on a permanent shift of 10pm till 7am. There is an Hour dinner & 2 15 min breaks which I think is a bit excessive. An hour is to long for dinner so I will pop back home & give Frank a walk, It takes less than 5 minutes to get there by the way.
Can't say much else really apart from I felt comfortable walking around the place & liked the atmosphere, All the staff were freindly & I just hope the same atmosphere is around when we are working.

They say some nice stuff during the Induction that you may be pleased to hear.

For starters No matter what we are doing or who told us to do it even our Managers, If a Customer needs help then Help them, Not casually either, Don't force yourself on them but be happy to wander around the shop & show them Exactly where the item is, Also we have to make sure at the till end that the customer has got any Bonuses, Free items that they are entitled to, 2 for 1 offers where they haven't got the extra 1 sort of thing The customer Always comes first

I did come out the Induction feeling nice about the place & the way they treat there customers & where they put there prioritys.

My parents met someone on the tills at their local Tesco who they now always look out for (don't know if she's still there). Only problem is we think she got told off for laughing too loud. ;D

Let's hope they stick by those rules with times getting a little tough. You really can't fake happy staff. :)

Justsomebloke
06-12-2008, 12:35
So, how'd it go? :D

:'(
I'll sum this up and best as I can & just hope you guys understand.
The job itself is basically just going out back grabbing a cage out of our section fridge & then dragging out front & finding where it goes & if there is any room, Also we do this thing called facing off where we bring the back(old) stuff to the front then restock the back bit of the shelf. As you can imagine it's a rince & repeat thing so you are just left to get on with it.
Not many customers about so you just plod on.

As you all know I went in all buzzing & happy & expected to have a honeymoon period of happyness for at least a week, Well the other employees killed it by around 4am & I had to say summit around 5am.
The woman I was put with spoke like she wanted a fight rather than being nice & sociable. Same with All the employees, They wasn't as angry as the woman with me but they were All slagging the place off constantly & on a right downer :(
So after around 5 hours of this I lost my smile & chirpyness & just went in to myself. My manager noticed & asked me what's up, I said "Well mate I've been out of work for ages now & was chuffed to bits to get the call, Unfortunetly though it seems like I am the only person happy to be here & that has took the dairy off it for me which is Crap."
I then asked him if the other employees were always like this, He asked me what I meant & I told him in a real polite way that I was a bit dissapointed in Grim atmosphere. He reckons that the last couple of days have been terrible & just ignore the miserable/mardy ones.
I just said to him Well it's my first day, I was buzzing when I got here & now I feel like I have been here 6 months, I'm Gutted.

About ten minutes later & all of a sudden Everybody got Chirpy & Smiley & Chatty
They had obviously spread the word & in my Honest opinion felt Bloody Guilty.
The woman with me was like Oh the last couple of days bla bla bla, It'l get a lot better, We are not normally like this etc etc etc Moan about Tescos there jobs whinge moan moan moan.

I switched off & did my job & prayed for 7 o clock so I could come home to my nice Frank staffy dog.

One things for sure Anybody that works with me from this Second onwards will be made to feel comfortable & Welcomed with open arms, Especially when that person will be the person helping to make my job easier, Bastards.

Haly
06-12-2008, 12:40
Aww :( Hope it picks up.
Jobs like that really are much better if you get on with the people, crucial element imo. Atmospheres like that suck. I've done some incredibly dull jobs and had many days where I'd rather not be in because I've felt so fed up (especially lately!) but I still manage to put on a good act so I don't bring anyone else down. Hopefully you just caught them on a particularly bad day and they'll improve.

Justsomebloke
06-12-2008, 12:54
Hopefully you just caught them on a particularly bad day and they'll improve.

It's my only hope mate as I am a people person & very sensitive to atmospheres, It really did bring me down :(
There are no customers about at all & plenty of room for banter as we pass each otehr or are in the same section.
Instead all you get every single time you meet anybody is them scowling & moaning about whatever :(

There is definately something wrong going on about the place, The store has been open 3 weeks, They under estimated the amount of Trade so are very under staffed, They over ordered produce & have all the xmas stuff comiing in, The place is Chaos, Packed out with stock that hasn't really any place to go & the staff are all completly ******* off ;D

I did nigh on 5 hours of Induction yesterday & then went & done a night shift so Yes I was knackered by around 4am. The job is twice as hard at the mo as I don't know where anything is at all. I am not put off just dissapointed that it will be an effort to have a laugh at work rather than the norm.
Once I got used to my section the job itself is a doddle. A few customers approached me for help which went really well but then I've always been sound at meeting folk & I enjoy helping them as well.

Gutted about losing the buzz so early that's what really pisses me off.

Haly
06-12-2008, 13:00
Hopefully you'll get the buzz back soon :) Can but hope eh! *hugs*

Mark
06-12-2008, 14:27
Try and stick it out until after Christmas. It's always going to be utter chaos in the run-up and as it's a new store that'll make things worse. The general feeling of doom and gloom everywhere this year isn't going to help the atmosphere either I'm afraid. Everyone seems pretty much fed up. :(

All they can ask of you is that you give of your best, and you're doing that. The rest will hopefully take care of itself. Keep at it and the best of luck. :)

I switched off & did my job & prayed for 7 o clock so I could come home to my nice Frank staffy dog.

TinkerBell
06-12-2008, 18:17
Pleased for you hun, but to be honest I can see where the other employee's are coming from, as I used to do that job (not with food though) but it gets abit annoying, and every company has faults, and everyone will pick on the faults when they have been there for a long time. Hopefully it will pick up, but all company's are struggling at the moment and this will inevitably be passed onto the other employee's. I am sure it will pick up :) It always did with my job, which was the same to be honest.

It can get you down though, when you first start and you are really happy and what not, but I have so many fond memory's of working in Wilkinson's. Stick in there :)

Justsomebloke
06-12-2008, 18:40
The store has only been open 3 weeks Tinkerbell so nobody has been there mroe than around 5 weeks Total. God help us when it's 3 years ;D We'll be having a Suicide a shift at this rate ;D;D;D

Also there is Untold overtime as the bosses under estimated how busy the store would be so it's very understaffed. There is Ample opputunity to earn good money here & even more oppurtunity to have a laugh & a mellow work place.
Also me being worried about being took on went straight out the window once I saw how others feel about the place. I can see Untold people leaving & this store Needs anybody that is prepared to put up with it.

I think these people need me to Save them from there own self made Hell ;D;D;D

TinkerBell
06-12-2008, 18:43
3 weeks of being overworked would most likely do that to you. I know it annoyed alot of people when that happened in Wilkinson's.

Although I would expect them to be abit more cheery to be honest, especially if they have just had another worker to help with the load. God knows, maybe they are just a bunch of miserable sods!

Hopefully you can cheer them up abit!

Also they may have been on for more than 3 weeks, working before the shop was opening to stock up the place, which can be very pushed by managers and what not to get it all done on time. Which is what happened with me.

loki
06-12-2008, 18:44
Malc if you can mate use this as an opportunity. No doubt the shift manager knows that the atmosphere on nights isn't going to be fantastic. But on the flip side if any opportunity comes up in the future for promotion your going to stand out from the crowd if your being positive in the face of adversity or negativity. At the end of the day, it's Tesco who are paying the wages not the negative lot on the shop floor. Look after number 1 because you owe the other lot nothing at all.

I'm a bit like you, I work in a sales office and at times it's like a morgue and it really gets to me. I have a few choices, either I sit there and let the atmosphere get to me and let them others drag me down to there level, sit there and do my own shnizzle or try and loft the atmosphere and bring everyone upto my level. Number 1 is easy but I try and go for numbers 2 & 3 where I can :)

Obviously it's not ideal working at night but the bottom line is and the people your working for should be happy that it's a pretty regular pay packet at the end of the day.

Keep your chin up fella. Remember you have worked hard for this and don't let some no marks spoil it for you

Cheers mate I needed that kind of a chatter
The feeling I have inside myself is, Ok then you ******** stay kin miserable & torture yourself but Me I'm not like that.
Because of the atmosphere/situation down there I really feel secure in the job ;D
3 seperate people including my section manager said Don't you worry about it mate, Get yourself through xmas & then once they have binned of all the numptys & the messas have left things will be fine around here ;)

I'm in there for the mo though & will just adapt accordingly with the situation to make it bareable for myself.
My Initial plan is to start a Top secret group of Happy/Positive people, Then once formed & trained we can release infiltrators amongst the dreary. To be honest I can't wait to get my troups trained up to Booby trap level :D

Facing off the shleves brings out teh Obsessive in me & I have to admit to getting off on it :o How Gay is that ;D

See Jen, it IS awesome! :p.
Glad I'm not the only one that enjoyed that. I faced up a whole corner shop including every individual chocolate bar because I was bored ;D

I've been known to re-face shelves when taking stuff off them to buy. It's a very rare thing indeed, but it has happened. No idea why given my own place is still in such a mess and I cba to sort it (going to attack a little corner tomorrow though). ;D

Speaking of mince... I remember when I worked part time in Sainsburys in the meat department, and getting told off by my mum when we went shopping because I kept rotating the correct dates to the front and tidying the mince display. :D

Thank god I'm not the only one then. ;D

Part of the reason I sometimes re-face is that I'm the bane of supermarkets - I can very regularly be found reaching to the back of shelves to get the stuff that hasn't been sat there for several days. :)

Panic over Guys & Gals :)
Went in last night & from the moment I entered the atmosphere was Tons better, Feeling comfortable there now I chirped a cheery Hello to everybody & took nothing back but Happy Greetings.
Turns out only me & one other person are on our section instead of four, we got stuck in & apparently I am A god send  I heard my team leader tell the manager about how just her & that new bloke had done really well & got it All sorted, He really is a God send she said :D
Within an hour of starting people were passing by Bantering & the whole shift floated by for all.

@Tinkerbell,
You was right mate it does seem that pressure has built up over the period up till now including initially stocking the shop out.
There is a problem though with some of the old Somerfield staff that have been kept on though, To explain I'd type, They are Somerfield fanboyz ;D
It's like Tesco is a 360 & Somerfield is a PS3 :p
A few folk have made a point of stopping & chatting to me & putting me in the picture, One guy especially has been very cool, He's a young chap over our store on relief & he come cross really well & it is through him I have recognised a difference between the old Somerfield staff & old Tesco staff.
Even the Standard shy Dudes have had to talk to me today, There has been No escape ;D
I feel Completely comfortable there & am in a far better frame of mind about the whole wroking exoperience than I was yesterday.

To summarise I think people now know that not only do I want to be there but I am happy to be there so if you are not then Stay the **** away from me ;D
It seems that some of the workers expect you to be miserable about working at Tesco stacking shelves so default to the "I am Hard & don't care" mode. Now that somebody is Openly happy about working there I think it allows others to show a little joy an all, The Mardi ones can go be Mardi on there own ;D

What Loki said!

When I did part time work over Christmas last year at Sainsburys SO many people were absolutely miserable! It was really awful - OK, they were cut out work wise but this was in the day and infront of loads of customers! It was so awful to watch!

So I thought screw it, and went in every day smiling and making jokes and working my socks off and not complaining! People soon warmed up and in doing that I did find some good eggs which were a laugh, making any mundane work very bareable! Plus, due to being happy shiny and la dee dah, customers were always cheery and gave awesome feedback! Made me feel happy :)

Show them the Malc we know and get them being fun and crazy :) Don't make them get you down!

I have finished my First full week
I have to admit to really struggling through the last couple of hours of the shift but I made it & it will only get easier.
Today we had our xmas dinner, Our manager took the floor whilst the whole night shift went up to the canteen for dinner & partay games :D I donned my hat Immedietly & forced everybody else to do the same putting myself on everybody & creating a jolly for all
I'm getting on great with the folk there & there isn't anybody there that is a complete arse. There's even a few women there to flirt & mess about with which makes the whole evening fly by most of the time. As far as my job goes it is Stacking shelves so how much of a description does that take, open box stack shelf ;D I have got quite Anal about my section though & am quite sad about facing off & rotating properly, Everything has to be Perfect & a full on Brick wall of stock is created :o I kind of drift off whilst I work or have a bit of banter if somebody is close enough. I am the instigator of sociability there already though & I like that a Lot ;D I've pulled the shy ones out there shells & we all sit & chat together now, None of that billy no mates solo table sitting BS whilst I am around ;D
I am on my weekend now & feel inside myself a new relaxed feeling, I can now do whatever the **** I like as I have well & truly earnt this time off

Just got through my 2nd night of my 3rd week.
Was a pretty mellow night, I got kidnapped by the other team again so spent a good couple of hours away from Nasty woman, Once that was done we had to much work to be bothered by owt else & then I got kidnapped by the other manager this time & helped her for my last hour or so, Time flew & I feel like I did a Really good nights work
They have moved on my breaks & have actually approached me to discuss when I want them & when is a good time for All, I can't ask no more than that & do feel I was listened to.
I s'pose this is all part of my big learning curve & getting on with all these new people is going to take some time. I don't sp'ose you lot realise what it's like for me & I don't want to whinge on so I will try to explain.
The whole of my life has been spent doing what I want to do when I want to do it, On top of this I have been lucky enough to choose my own company, I am thinking that I have been Spoilt & need to grow up
Majorly embarrasing for me at this ripe old age but **** it I have always admitted when I am wrong & have always taken whatever crap or punishment I am due.
I am surpirsed one of you didn't point out that I broke one of the three rules I made for myself, Namely keeping my Big gob shut, All I can say is that my attitude at work is one I am Proud of & I have never been so Humble before.
I am Trying my best & that is all I can say

One thing though, I really do appreciate the support as this is not ***** easy

Thanks All

I am Trying my best & that is all I can say
And that is the most important point of all. Any decent employer should respect that, and it sounds like they do. I can't imagine being in your situation given the working life I've had, but you have my respect for sticking at it and doing your best not to let situations and awkward individuals get to you. :)

I can report a good nights work was done & I felt pretty damn good right up till the last half hour as well.
My Manager did pull me though about me seeing the Personnel manager & tbqfh he wasn't very happy. Not pissed at all but I made a Mistake there & he told me so, I should have waited till the next night & spoken to Him & then if I wasn't happy gone on to Personnel, As he explained I completely understand & have made him look bad to the day staff, Basically me going to Personnel makes it look like He the Night Manager can't do his job.
He was Uber cool & professional though which gets my Respect, I don't think I have had such a Mature Adult conversation with anybody like that before :o
Well not without Stomping on there head a bit first anyways :p
Anyway,
So we had this Chat for around 20 minutes & he told me the Procedure for future problems & I re assured him that rather than going to tittle tattle I had asked another lady on the floor who to speak to as I wasn't happy & she had said Sheila, Sheila the Personnel manager served us our Xmas dinner so I honestly thought she was a friendly known person to discuss my probs with rather than trying to kick up a stink for anybody in particular.
Turns out My complaints were justified apparently & as soon as I got there I got some Training :D My complaint was that there really is no point in coming up to me complaining about anything at end of shift when I haven't been trained on how to do whatever it is properly, No good just getting us to do things & then moaning at the end it isn't done right.
Secondly everybody spoke to me as they should, Even Nasty woman was quite civil the Whole night & I was Happy to work shoulder to shoulder with her on Numerous occasions last night :)
My breaks are sorted & flexibility is not a problem.
I think I made a Mistake not going through him but he wasn't there & I did ask a nice lady who to see rather than just go off to cause trouble.
What's done is done though & I did say that I was quite happy with how things had been dealt with & wasn't stewing about owt & had just left it to take its course.
He seemed cool though & re assured me that things have been dealt with people have been spoken to & things will get better. I told him that I had felt much better that shift & had noticed the difference & appreciated it

Good night last night & I can Honestly say It is getting easier
Come 5am'ish I dip a bit but it passes after 15 mins or so & I am sound to the end, even walking Frank when I get in is not a problem where as the first 2 weeks my feet & legs ached like **** whilst out on a walk.
My manager & team leader panicked the Whole night as usual but we had the nights work done by 5.45am & spent till 8am just facing off & messing, I dipped off & helped out some other Dude on the Meat, He had just started & come in to some Massive 6ft high Meat trays so I got stuck in with him & we sorted it in 30 minutes rather than it be a Ball ache for him & taking 2 hours.
Come 7.45am I was told to go & hide in the canteen & Thanks & all that Job done :)
Just tonight now & I finish at 7am an hour early so it will feel a sweet shift, Also I can't see there being much to do in the way of filling so I reckon we'll spend all night sorting reduced out & rotating.
Definately getting Easier though, Lots easier

Yeah it does get easier. I don't think anyone who's not worked in retail realises how draining it is to be on your feet all day (or night). When I used to work at Boots, I was absolutely dead after a 9hr shift. Sounds like you're enjoying it and doing well though. Well done :) I've just come back from Ashby Tesco. Come 2am everybody was popping out to the cash machine to see if they had been paid, I hadn't, Then I checked at 4.30am & it still hadn't come, This put a massive weight on my back & made the hours left drag like ****. I finsihsed at 7am & came home & walked Frank & now I am having a smoke to mellow out. I'm going to wander down town after 9am but I don't hold out much hope, Looks like it's just me Frank & the Telly for Xmas this year.

Got a real bad feeling that tonights shift will be my last :(
This morning 5 people were let go from another section, It's the Thanks for getting us through xmas now **** off bit me thinks.
On my section it would have to be me that was let go, My team leader is safe & she has her Husband in doing 2 nights a week but looking for Full time & there are another 2 people with Full time jobs, Nothing at all has been said but it just feels that way, Last night I got moaned at about half a dozen times for one thing or tuther, All BS I may add.
The night before only me & 1 girl were on my section instead of the usual 4 to 5, My Manager was proper stressing, Our delivery came in & I got tore into it, I wanted to prove a point & felt I had a point to prove, Tbqfh I am sick of people doing sod all whilst others do the work but I am not stupid enough to shout about it. So night before last I took the oppurtunity to prove myself, I steamed the delivery & pre sorted it by myself in the chiller, Working hard enough to sweat in minus 5 I pre sorted nine cages in about 40 mins. To cut a long story short me & my work mate did the delivery & she got off around 7am whilst I had an hour to finish the last cage & clear up, Job done,
No huffing & Puffing, No Stressing, No moody old bags stropping about **** all, Just 2 people with there heads down working like **** for absolutely sod all Thanks or recognition for what we did that usually takes 5 people to do.
Felt ****ing good after though even though it ****ed me so much I was knackered on shift last night.
Anyway I have tried like a Bastard but I know they are going to call me in the office like they did those other 5 poor ****ers & tip me back into a World of poverty.
I tell you, I Proper felt for the guys & gals that got it this morning, All of them came up & told me as I get on with them All, Men & Women with that Sorry look in there eyes, One girl called Jo has the Best Aisle in the shop an all, When I helped on her section only yesterday I said to her & my manager **** me I wish our section was as well sorted as this one, She said to me Yes I like to keep it perfect but they moan because I am to slow.
Now she has been kicked out it only proves my fears with this place & that is they set High standards but give unachievable time to do it.
All of us are constantly moaned at about the finer details but are moaned more at about time doing it right, My work is a Paradox ;D
Last night I was pulled for talking to people
I looked at my Manager & said They were Customers :p He went on to say I talked to a collegue an all & my work mate girly person. I told him the work Dude does the Milk Perfect & I was pinching some advice of him which I was. I cannot help it if I take a long time with customers so basically gave him a look to say **** off, Not in a dirty way but a ****ing hell dude I was sorting a customer there is **** all you can say piss off you Muppett rather than a **** off you **** look.
Laugh of it is that I absolutely Love my customers, This big old Yanky bird wanted a certain milk & size which I had to go out back for twice as she changed her mind when I got a result the first time & give her further options, She continued on with her shopping & I found her out 3 times;D
Once sorted she leaned across stared at my name badge & asked me my name :D +
I Love shocking people with overly good service & thinking to myself See that ****ing surprised you didn't it ;D;D;D

Thanks for listening & fingers crossed I have a job this time tomorrow.
Sorry for swearing but to tired to bother & you all know me now ;)

Well my line manager wasn't in last night so he couldn't bin me off :D
They did bin 2 more off though from the day staff yesterday so that was 7 in Total.
Apparently they are moving some Tesco staff from another store over rather than lay them off. I think this is quite good as it shows they look after the Tesco staff but apparently it is a way of getting rid of people without paying redundancy. The way it goes is to move staff to stores they have to commute to so the staff get pissed off & find summit else, JD. (Allegedly)
Most of the staff there are feeling understandably insecure which has a pretty bad effect on morale.
The low Morale has brought peoples thoughts to the fore & it is said out loud now that Tesco don't want the Somerfield staff & as soon as they are gone the better, This comes from the old Somerfield staff, Not Tesco.

So,
Nowt to report yet & I just sit here dreading the phone ringing & them binning me off that way. I do have that feeling of impending doom & really can't see me getting a permanent job, This is mainly down to the current climate the fact that Tesco will move there permanent staff in & bin the temp rather than bin there own.
I honestly cannot argue with that & just hope that one day I am permanent Tesco & get the same protection.

@Wossi
Blinding idea mate ;D
Don't know about comment cards but a phone call to the day manager would be kin Hilarious

@Semi
I am hoping the same thing mate, The way she looked at my name badge was either for Future reference or to pass on a compliment, I am hoping it's the latter tbqfh as it wouldn't do me any harm at all.
The one thing I do better than Anybody else in the shop or at least as well as the other Best person is deal with the Customers, It's mad & feels like a Calling it really does :o
I am kin Superb with Strangers even if I say so myself ;D Last night I had 2 complete piss heads in my right hand & 2 Cops on lunch in my other, To me it makes no difference at all & nobody does as much as me to sort a customer out.
They need to pay me 30k a year to be customer liason officer :p
My job would be to go round stores nationwide bringing standards of service up to mine
Initially I would hit them on stealth to suss out where & who is messing my system & then once identified I would set about the staff to show them the way ;D
As tongue in cheek as this post is I am very confident that if Everybody treated the customers the way I do our business would Double.
No way would anybody go to Any other store & put up with the low level of service they recieve when they could get my level of service for free, YES I am bloody serious ;D
