Off road motor biking?

Is there any where in the uk where you can just hop on your own dirt bike and go off-roading in open countryside. Are there specific path and maps you can go one, how does things like insurance work?

Yes there most certainly is.
For the Ultimate off road experience & I mean Ultimate, Back to when you were 12 on a push bike ride & thought the World went on forever & everything seemed much larger, You have to go to the "Desert" :cool:
You are Nobody on a Crosser if you haven't done a day at the Desert ;)
The "Desert" is a nick name for a Humongous piece of land nears Mansfield where many people go either on Crossers or 4be4's.
Get yourself on Youtube & search for "The Desert" I am positive you'll find untold vids that will show you a bit of what it's like. I cannot explain in words but it has Every thing, Forest trail riding,Whoops, Hill climbs, Water, Figure 8 sand pit, Sand Jumps, Mud jumps, Abandoned train tracks with embankment up both sides going on for miles with Untold different types of climbs, Every single road surface & some you won't know yet like this dusty black slag, What more can I say the place just has to be visited, Full on Mission but worth every bead of sweat you drop getting there & getting unloaded etc etc etc

Other way you can go local is find your Local Green lanes via proper maps & then Google the locations & plan a route, Depends whether the bike is road going as well ?
Makes it loads easier if the vehicle you are using is road legal as you can just nip from road to dirt all day without any hassle. If it's not road legal then it's to much hassle doing the Green lanes as they are not long enough, You really have to put together a proper route like we do when we go out in the jeeps.

Haven't got a bike, but it's something I've always wanted to do. I used to do mountain biking and down hilling before I became a lazy lard arse. I get a lot of days of during the week when no one else is about. And think this could be a good hobby.

what would you need
maps of green lanes, would you need liability insurance for the off road bit?

Not heard of liability insurance for green laning TBH. Just invest in plenty of good protective clothing - you'll need it :)

My KDX was just about road legal and as has been said, it makes it much easier to get to the off-road bit.

I love sports bikes but I have to say that an enduro/crosser is more fun.
