I'm after some tickets for my mum for Christmas and she'd like one of the classical ballets (i.e. not modern). Unfortunately the two she mentioned aren't showing in London and I have no idea about any others! The two she mentioned were Swan Lake and Coppelia and it needs to be in London, anyone know what's good?

On first glance, not really much on at the moment :( I would wait for something 'decent' to come along.

For Xmas it has to be Nutcracker! That's def on but not sure how long it goes on after the new year.

Swan Lake is great for a first-timer but the Nutcracker, as Pebs says, is best because of the amazing music though SL is also brilliant.

Take my advice and don't sit too near the front - the sound of the dancers on the stage can tend to ruin it.

Nearly forgot, Giselle.

Why not buy something for her in advance (and do it such that the tickets are given to her for Xmas)?

I was planning on buying some tickets for Late Jan/early Feb anyway.

How about Matthew Bourne's Edward Scissorhands?

*Boyfriend of a ballet & contemporary dancer right here* ;)

Saw that but I think my mum is after something very classical as opposed to comteporary & modern.

Thanks for the responses, wasn't expecting anything but thought I'd give it a go!

How about Sleeping Beauty? That's at the Coliseum for the next week or so. Fantastic music of course and it's the English National Ballet.

Search around for Giselle if you can though - it's a bit dark later on but can be a great production in addition to the music and dance.

Agree about the noise, it's a right racket near the front! Also the rather large er.....packages in the tights can be a little distracting if you're too close and I mean that sincerely. Last time I went there was one that was just unfeasably ginormous and it was hypnotising.

For similarish reasons I'm always disappointed about how flat chested ballerinas are :(

Ok, I'll go to the ballet if you come and see Trivium with me.

I can just see Faysh in the stalls watching ballet, donning a tux, white bow tie, white gloves, monocle, top hat and sipping a Chateau SpecialBreau.

*'BUMP!'* Ohhh man!!! I love the ballet! Im more of a fan of contemporary ballet such as Matthew Bourne...for anyone who isnt sure but want to give ballet a try, or blokes who want to take their girlfriends without looking like a big girl...this is the company to go see!

Swan Lake (remember the very last scene from Billy Elliot? Thats Matthew Bournes Swan Lake!) Car Man, Edward Scissorhands, The Nutcracker...all AWESOME performances!!! Beautifully danced, fabulous costumes and lighting design....oh god I LOVE THEM!!!

Swan Lake is on at Sadlers Wells in London until 24th Jan 2010...I highly recommend!

Or at Bristol Hippodrome The Russian State Ballet of Siberia are doing Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty in early 2010, then in March The English National Ballet are doing Cinderella!!!!!!
