Hello guys,
I am running a club in school using new software that allows pupils to design games using 2D / 3D designs. It's really fun to use.
I am trying to have a big huge launch after Christmas and would like to invite a games designer into school.
Has anyone got any connections or ideas of how I go about this :)
Thanks
Lynnie :D

EA have offices in the Surrey area IIRC. Contact them and ask nicely.
I know someone who works for Ubisoft, albeit as a forum moderator. I'll have a word with her for you when I get the chance :)
So you mean a modern games designer then :(
You have Sony just down the road from you in Wavertree Technology Park. They most recently did Wipeout HD for the PS3.
Other than that I can get you a couple of guys who did work on the Amiga and Spectrum ;)

I'm not sure my pupils know what they are ;D yes modern designers please ;)
Sony could be interesting though :)
You may find some designers at www.gamerspress.com. It's a very good community of writers, developers and designers. There is a requests section on the forums and you might get someone from there.

Use the linkedin website.
Or alternately, use http://www.gamedevmap.com/ and you'll find out which companies are in your area.
What kind of area are you looking into getting? What position?
Environmental Artist, Character Artist, Concept Artist, Texture Artist, Sound Technician, Programmer, AI Programmers, Lead Artists, Producers?
There are so many elements to game design.

It's a shame really, only last month I had a friend working for Bizarre Creations in Liverpool, but he's moved to Canada.
If you tell me exactly what you want I can have a word with him and see if he can sort it out with one of his ex-colleagues and get them to see you. He was the artist side of things like me, so he would know some artists, it's just whether they can get time off.

Thanks Carl that would be awesome :)
I'm after someone who can come in and talk about the process of game making. How the process starts to the actual creation of the game and Character devleopment. How do they get through each stage, is it like animated films they work from a storyboard and go from there?
Thanks again :D

I'll mention it to my friend and see if he can sort someone who will be able to discuss the procedure of game development through with you.
When would you want the person and what age is the target audience?

Yeah, I will do. I've not spotted him online much - I guess he's still sorting his house etc.. out over there. When I see him on I'll collar him.

shame it's not film design - my friend's brother was the animator on the Corpse Bride. He's quite often in the 'Pool, so if you ever start looking at that area :D
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that's interesting!!! I also do an animation unit with my year 9's and GCSE kids. Oooooooooo!!!! ;)
We need to talk ;D

He's going to be busy though I warn you - his new film Coraline comes out in May 2009. We'll have to see what we can do :D
Cool :D

Okay, I've spoken to him (finally - 4 times we've missed each other today alone). He said he'll have a word with a few of the lads back home in Liverpool but would like to know exactly when you'd be looking for because the lads would have to get out the 'office' for a couple of hours and would need to know when.
Neil says:
what i can do is send an email to the lads back there and see if anyone is interested and can get some time away from the office.,

It would be 3pm - 4pm an date after 20th January.
I would like someone who could give the kids a talk about how they are involved in creating games. How they go through the stages of design, is it similar to animation from storyboard to creation or is it more complicated.
Some pics / a powerpoint presentation showing what they do too would be good.
Thanks for all your time and help Karl :)

It's like animation. Concept, storyboards, creative writers.
Except more roles are used in making games.

I've not heard from him, to be honest, I've not even seen him online. As soon as he is I'll give him a nudge :).

I know a few, but they have all moved up to Dundee to do a secret Xbox 360 game. I suspect Liverpool might be a bit far :(
