I got off the rig yesterday and because my employers changed our crew change day but not our flights, I had a day to kill in Cairo today.
I went to the office this morning to have a chat with the boss (extremely nice chap) and my visit just happened to coincide with lunchtime. We decided to go out for lunch and invited his boss (who, by some concidence, happens to have a company credit card).
We went to a place called Max's and had a lovely starter of mushroom stuffed with asparagus and other good stuff, followed by very tender Australian steak.
This was lovely.
I got dropped off back at my hotel (Sofitel, Maadi) at 2ish and had a few beers then went to my room for a bit.
I went downstairs for dinner at about 20:00 and rather than go to the Tex-Mex or Italian places out the back, like I usuaally do, I decided to go to the French place (Le Clovis) next to the bar. There was a wedding on and I couldn't get into the restaurant but the waiter was happy to serve me in the bar.
For starter, I had marinaded sea bass carpaccio with eggplant caviar. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a starter so much - it was fabulous.
Main course was Veal Tenderloin with Lobster and vanilla sauce, served with Asparagus and Mushrooms. The veal was slightly overcooked but delicious, the lobster tails were utter perfection and the vanilla sauce was exquisite. The only slight fly in the ointment was the Asparagus - it was overcooked.
With my meal, I had a bottle of 2006 Beaujolais which was refreshing and tasty.
The sweet was a bit of a let down - I expected more from Crépe soufflé but, on the whole, it didn't ruin the meal. I had a nice glass of ruby port with my sweet.
I followed that with coffee and a large VSOP Cognac.
The whole experience cost around 830 LE (about £70). Great value for money imo since the wine cost 300 LE and the Cognac cost 150 LE, meaning the food only cost about 300 LE (if you take off the cost of the beer beforehand and the port) which is only about £25 by today's exchange rates.
Bargain
If you ever stay in Cairo, head to Le Clovis in the Sofitel Maadi and eat there - you won't be disappointed.
