It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet it's maker. It's a stiff...
Guess what - it's a Sony. It's just over a year old which makes it the oldest piece of Sony kit I've owned before it broke down.
So, the question is - so I go for the Sony bargain basement from Blockbusters at the moment - BDP-S350 + 6 bluray disks (only one of which I have...) for £200, a PS3, a Panasonic *who I rate much higher than Sony*, or something else entirely.
Is the PS3 any good at DVD upscaling? As I've got about 100x more DVD's that bluray's - I'd like a good upscaler.
I have been recommended a Toshiba XDE500 as an excellent upscaler - but thats only a DVD player - which means yet another piece of kit under the TV...
I'd also like it to be region free for DVD's and Blurays *if thats even possible yet* too... Not too much to ask is it? ;)

Beautiful plumage, the Norwegian Blu(e).

PS3 is a fantastic DVD upscaler, the reliability of most Sony products is dire i have to agree, most lasting only a couple of years. That said, my launch day PS2 is still working, it had some issues for a while but i left it in a cupboard for a few months and it works again!?

It was just pinin' for the fjords.
Panasonic BD30 or whatever the latest model is.

The PS3 is the best Blu-Ray player out there anyway, so I'd be going for that without a doubt.

Definitely used to be, i'm not so sure how it competes with more recently released players such as the S350, especially when you consider the prices.

Purely on Sony's warrant replacement service alone, let alone the additional features such as Internet browsing, Folding, friend messaging and of course, Playstation and Playstation 3 game play I would go for it for that price.
Yeah but then you're buying it as an all in one media device.
For someone who doesn't want a PS3, or a folding machine, or internet browser, the extra expense probably isn't worth it. Personally I'd prefer a standalone now they mostly match up BluRay feature wise, if only because it suits under the TV better style wise :p
Neither the £200 deal or the PS3, but a £160 deal

5 free films (2 via registration).
the S350 can be made region free for DVDs via universal remote hack.

I don't want a PS3 for gaming. I don't use my xbox 360 at all.
As for the internet browsing, and messaging - I've got 2 laptops *one huge and one diddy* and a phone... ;) I don't fold and for a media player I've got a media PC and a hacked Xbox.
So it would purely be used as a DVD and Bluray player.
Currently investigatign the Sony 350, 550 and the Panasonic BD35
Seen that Amazon offer - very tempting.... all it's missing is Iron Man dvd to match the Blockbuster offer...for £40 though...
Iron Man BD will only be like £15 anyway wont it?

Precisely. Plus i can flog Wall-e and Casino Royale.
Wall-e cos I've already got it, and Casino Royale because it's crap.
I recently got a Panasonic BD35 and am pretty impressed. I'm having issues, but that's related to my projector rather than the player.

Nnnnnnnngggg.....
Sony 350 or Panny BD35....
Sony's 550 doesn't have anything extra that I really need so thats out. I like the price and the freebies with the Sony... But I like the Panasonic because it's not Sony and and seems more capable.... Gaaaah!
Well, i didn't want to PS3 because i have no games i want to play on that and i just wanted a multi region player that upscales well.
The Sony S350 fit the bill to a T.

I would say PS3's look better under the TV than any other Blu-Ray player out there...

Shame that it's such a lump. The Xbox was large - the PS3 is even bigger. At least it was easier to put other items on top of the xbox.
I'm leaning towards the Panasonic at the moment. Even through the Sony is so much cheaper. Can also get both region free *dvd wise* quite easily though.

If disk playback is all you are after then i would certainly go for the Panasonic, they're probably my favorite hardware manufacturer out there, never had an item break.
If you think you'd take advantage of the PS3s media center capabilities such as AVI/MP4 playback, Play TV etc, then it's worth considering, if not certainly a stand alone unit is the way to go.
The Panasonic would get my vote. I'm not a fan of Sony stuff at the best of times but my brother has the BD35 and it does the job very nicely.

Kidding right?
How is the best out there?
(Serious question BTW)
Edit: I've just read your reason and I've also read the responses.
So not really the best BD player :p
Take away the games aspect, the PS3 is not the best BD player out there.
1 - It's not multi-region for DVD or anyway making it multi-region through a remote hack
2 - It's not the quietest of machines
3 - It's not the most elegant (matter of personal opinion)
4 - You can't stack it under something
5 - There is no remote free with it (joy pad doesn't count)
6 - It's £100 more than a S350 and a Panasonic BD35
7 -

Jesus, since when have PS3s been £270? I thought they were still like £400
*runs off to look for PS3 deals*

£280 here for the console. :)
Yeah I just saw on Play for £290 with 2 games, a BD and a BD remote.
Anyway, enough of that, as it's off topic really :p

So not really the best BD player :p
In terms of laser it definitely used to have the highest quality model, I'm not sure whether this is still the case. As a BD player it's the only one out there that plays BD-Roms and BD-Games, ergo it is the best as it plays more than anything else ;):p.
*I think I've dug myself out of that hole*

So, the question is why, given that I've obviously had a lot of bad experiences with Sony gear, did I buy yet another?
Fixed, with the question still hanging in the ether.
