Right, I've got a shortlist of TV's that I've been looking at in the last few days and am really not sure on what to get for gaming purposes mostly.
Here seem the best place to ask about gaming :p
(old series) Toshiba 42X3030D, 1080p LCD - £550 at play.com
(new series) Toshiba 42XV555D, 1080p LCD - £600 at various places
Panasonic TH42PX80, 720p Plasma - £550 with 5 year warranty at richersounds
Panasonic TH42PZ80, 1080p plasma - around £700
Ideally I'd like to be able to keep this TV till it goes kaput, so I'm not sure on the 720p plasma still, wouldn't want to get stuck with old technology in a year or two's time if I can help it.
I've been told however that the 720p panasonic has fantastic picture quality, what are plasmas like for long session gaming?

We have the TH-42PX80B which is excellent and I have been playing lots with little or no retention.
you can currently get it for £499 at currys :) bargaintastic!
The currys price doesn't include 5 year warranty but get RS to price match ;)

it's £499 at richersounds without the warranty, but I'd happily pay £50 for a 5 year warranty especially seeing as my current TV has died within 5 months :p

Ah didn't know the price at RS. All I can say is it has been great for us and we've had it nearly 6 months.

Is it worth £200 over the 720p set?
Is it more "futureproof"?
I hate that term, I suppse what I'm asking is - in a couple of years will I be told "if you had the 1080p set you'd be able to see x,y&z" or "you need the 1080p set for that"
Plasma ftw.
You'll only begin to get burn issues if you're playing the same game for like 6 hours a day every day with no other usage for the screen at all.

How far away are you going to be sitting?

Because it is truly 1080p rather than a mock 720p
It's also best if you want to use a PC with it.

How far away are you going to be sitting?
Currently about 6-7ft, but moving to a new house in a month or so - not sure on distance there, will be further than 7ft
Because it is truly 1080p rather than a mock 720p
It's also best if you want to use a PC with it.
What do you mean about the first part?
I won't be using a PC with it for gaming or working, probably just plug my macbook into it for visualisations if I have a party.
720p plasma will most likely be 1024x768 with rectangular pixels (LCD being 1366x768 with square pixels)

Yup. It's a real hate of mine - there are set HD resolutions and the only TV's that actually stick to any of those resolutions are the FullHD sets.
854x480
1280x720
1920x1080
Anything other than those 3 is an abomination unto Nuggan! It really pisses me off to be fair.
The *cough* 'HDReady' Plasma's are 1024x768 - which is great for a PC display apart from the rectangular pixels but at least it's a real resolution. 1366x768 is just a pain in the arse.

The parents' Plasma is 1024x1024, but it's absolutely sensational for colours with HD content.
I would always go plasma.

Okay, so the cheapest I can find the PZ80 for with 5 year warranty is at richersounds for £802
Between the 2nd and 15th of feb CostCo have the 46" PZ80 screen for £770inc VAT with 5 year warranty.
I think I'm gonna bottle it and get a cheaper screen that's more suitable for me at the moment. bah!

I'd rather pay the extra £32 quid for getting it at a shop with a good reputation for CS over an online retailer, if it was the cost alone. Up to you about the suitability of the screen though :D
SidewinderINC

Costco isn't an online retailer.
And sorry, the price at Richersounds is for the 42" model.
42" = £802 w/ 5 year warranty
46" = £770 w/ 5 year warranty.

Get both and dual screen them :D
If you're willing to go 50" and 720p (probably fine for gaming as few games are 1080p), there's an LG 50" plasma for £650 delivered:

Be careful of LG screens the image retention can be quite bad on them to start with.
