Having trawled through a load of free MMORPG's i've finally come to the conclusion that you get what you pay for :D. I'm basically looking for a game that me and Jodie can play without having to pay for it as our playtimes will be sporadic at best. Guild Wars looks like a good compromise but i'm loathe to spend money without having tried it first and the demo client on file planet seems out of date as i cant get a key. I have a few questions if anyone is willing / able to answer them it'd be nice :). Is there a proper demo i can download? I see there is a Guild Wars II, does that incorporate the first or is it an expansion? Also what about Nightfall? A normal expansion or the previous versions included? How does the instancing compare to your average MMORPG? Is forming a group just a case of logging onto a lobby and picking randoms etc? Do i need to do offline play to enhance my char to play online? That's all i can think of for now but any extras you think i might want know will be appreciated.

Don't know if there's a demo about sorry. But I believe that Game are currently selling the original (Guild Wars:Prophesies) for £10

GW II (Guild Wars: Factions) is a standalone game and an expansion. If you have a Prophesies account then you can add your CD key for Factions to the account and have all the content available to all your characters. Or you can just buy Factions and play it without having to buy Prophesies. The same will be true of Nightfall, which is out at the end of October.
The previous versions ie missions territories etc are not included in the newer standalons/expansions.

Not sure what you mean as this is the only MMORPG that Ive played :)

Is forming a group just a case of logging onto a lobby and picking randoms etc?

There are town and outposts scattered around the gaming world that you can enter. These act as staging areas for groups and also the only places that you can access merchants and your storage box. When you are not in a town/outpost then you are in your groups own version of the game world. So you'll never bump into other players that aren't in your group.

Do i need to do offline play to enhance my char to play online? That's all i can think of for now but any extras you think i might want know will be appreciated.

There is no offline content in GW at all. Everything is played online.

Let me know if you want to know anything else or if you're not sure about any of my answers. :)

Pity about the demos. Looks like the only way i'll know is to try it. I've had a quick look round the official site and like the looks of it and will have a look at those links in the other guild wars thread too. I might pick up Factions, can get a copy for 17 quid.

Actually i just thought of another question. Jodie read somewhere about choosing PvP or PvE at the start of character creation. I thought everything was instanced off so how does that work exactly?

OK PvP characters can only participate in PvP arenas and start off at lvl 20(max) you can also choose max armour and weapons for them. They have access to any skills that have been unlocked on your account.

PvE characters start at lvl 1 and you have to level them up by playing through the story arc, gaining better weapons and armour as you progress. Once you get to lvl 20 (I believe though it may be lower) then your PvE characters can also participate in the PvP arenas but can only use those skills that they have acquired during game play.

Hope this makes sense.

What quite a lot of people do is have 2 or 3 PvE characters and use their other character slots to re-roll PvP characters as and when they are needed.

As a side note I'd suggest Prophesies for PvE over Factions. In comparison Prophesies has 25 main story missions against Factions 13 main missions.

You'll tend to get better value for money from Prophesies. Which I believe is still only £17 from Play.com and as I said I think it's cheaper in Game atm.

OK added you both the my friends list. Oh and I'll say again what I said in the other thread. Do Not sell dyes to other players til you find a dye trader later in the game. Black and silver dyes especially.

Oh something that I thought of while chatting to a bloke at work about the game.
Only 1 rune of any given type will take effect when put on your armour.
So theres no point adding a second minor vigor rune to a piece of armour if you already have a vigor rune on another piece.
The same goes for any attribute enhancing runes :)

Hope that makes sense. :)

Not even got any runes yet but will keep that in mind thanks :).

Slightly off topic, but have you looked at Project Entropia? Free to d/l and play, you can play for free but it takes a looong time to accumulate enough cash to have fun, or you can deposit from a credit card. The advantage there is that you can choose when to play and how much, if any, you wish to deposit. Just a thought :)
