View Full Version : The IMDb Top 250 - 365 challenge

04-01-2009, 02:36
As those who read my post in the photography section saw I am attempting to watch the IMDb rated top 250 movies of all time within 365 days and a couple of members also expressed an interest in doing it also - especially as I'm sure most have only seen a fraction of the list and few close to the total in the list.
My progress can be followed at 2009 Challenge - IMDb Top 250 (http://www.nokkonwud.com/?page_id=405) on my site where I also aim to create a small write up of those movies I see. I will also post progress here too now obviously.
I thought it would be interesting for a few of us to attempt it as all of those in the list are easily acquirable either by DVD loans, rentals or other methods.
The list I have was accurate as of Jan 1 2009 and can be seen here (http://www.nokkonwud.com/files/boatdrinks/imdbtop250.html) (html) or downloaded here (http://www.nokkonwud.com/files/boatdrinks/imdbtop250.zip) (.zip) or for Excel, here (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ml5ezjvhn2x) (.xls) thanks to Pumpkinstew.
Links are there for you to update on your own sites with your progress, though I will happily host peoples lists on mine if those who participate e-mail me the updated list as you watch them. :)

I'm in - gonna take ages to add them on Lovefilm though :p
I'll think about making a web page but I'll need help :(
I am up for this, seen a few of them and was a member at Merlins portal and they had all 250 to obtain by a means, but the site is down.
I have seen a few in the top 250
I need to watch 170 of the 250 :'(
Going through them all was like wow, but if the ones I have seen and I have loved them all I am in for a treat, not a old movie fan until recently but cant wait to start watching some.
I will watch this one in Dec 09 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) :D

I think I've watched about 100 of the top 250 without checking and I'll probably watch about another 50 or so in the next year but some of the top films just hold no interest for me so I'll never be likely to watch them, not even just to tick them off.

There's some that don't interest me, but I'm using this challenge to make me watch them and to hopefully be pleasantly surprised by their quality.
I can give it a go, i have a Tesco Love Film account but i think i can do Top 100 (of those that i have not seen), but 250 would be pushing it as i watch about 1 movie a week currently.

Large reason why I'm doing it. Used to watch a lot more than I currently do. Want to watch ~4-5 a week.
OK, just going through the list now.....I think i've seen a LOT of it, 49 of the top 100 ! lol but then drops dramatically as the list goes on, 105 out of 250, may be 110, as i don't remember what happened in a few of the older ones.
But i dunno how i can trust this list, V for Vendetta is above Gone with the Wind ???? WHAT ??? Children of Men above Toy Story ?????
I think I'll start with the Top 100, see how far I get and use my existing blog to document it, should be fun.

I'm in, updates will be here http://erutaerc.wordpress.com/2009-imdb-challenge/
I've only seen 36 of those films....god help me.
I'll give this a go but not sure how I'll be getting hold of most of the titles :)
Will probably post my progress here as I don't have a webpage to post on. :)

Interesting challenge. Do we have to watch them again if we've already seen them? You're not going to make me sit through Kill Bill 2 again are you? :(
My list is 112 seen and 138 still to see. Although I need to check some of the foreign films as I may know them by the english title.
I popped the list into an Excel sheet with which I can supply if anyone wants it.
I'd better start with the Godfather triology which I've managed to see all of but only in bits and pieces. :o

How come The Departed is on the list and the original (and superior) Infernal Affairs isn't?
Where's Ghost in the Shell?
It is a brokelist:angry:
I'm going to see if I can have a bash at this at well, can you make the Excel sheet available please.
I've added a progress thing as well, it's here (http://nentecular.wordpress.com/) if I've done it right.

Just put 'y' or 'n' in the seen it column and the totals should update. :)
I lost the hotlinks to IMDB importing the text unfortunately.
I like the info popups on your page feek.
EDIT: The sponsored links on Requiem for a Dream say 'Fun Stuff', 'Drug Addiction' and 'Step by Step' in that order ;D
Thanks for that. This is going to be tough, I've seen 48 but as I read it, the challenge is to watch all of them, not just the ones you've not seen already.

From the list that Pumpkinstew posted I've watched only 86 of the top 250, it might be more but if I was unsure or couldn't remember for definite I've not counted it. I do have at least 20 of my unseen films in my DVD collection to watch already though, I just need to find the time and interest to sort it out.
The problem with the IMDB list is that at any given time there are too many new films in it, although that usually gets sorted out in time you can see several films from 2008 in the listing, while there have been some great films released in 2008 I struggle to believe there are anywhere near as many as the list would suggest that are stone cold classics.
How come The Departed is on the list and the original (and superior) Infernal Affairs isn't?
Where's Ghost in the Shell?
Because the list has become ruined in the last couple of years by scores of 15 years olds voting every new release 10/10 even if it wasn't actually very good.

I know, there are lots of films thats on there which i disagree with, and films that should be on there which isn't. Usually the list settles down after a year or so after the movie comes out but I can't find The French Connection, Toy Story 2 in there. And I don't see any romantic comedies either, When Harry Met Sally is a great movie, certainly better than Children of Men FFS, so is Shakespeare in Love.

Yep, now up to 116 seen. :)
I'm on 102 seen maybe a few more as I'm not sure on a few.
This is gonna be very hard work.
I am right though aren't I? It doesn't matter whether you've seen the films already, the challenge is to watch all 250 in 2009 or am I misunderstanding it?

This is an issue and I had been toying with the idea of updating the list every month, so it would mean having to potentially watch more than the 250, but that's starting to border on the ridiculous. Everyone can have complaints about the list as it's personal opinion, personally I think it's shocking that Flight of the Navigator, Truman Show and the first 2 Bourne movies aren't there.
In this list there are 4 noticeable 2008 movies, The Wrestler, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk and Gran Torino, and whilst it may be a surprise that they are all there and quite possibly at least 1 will drop from the list, I would be surprised if they weren't all great films and better than some in that list (such as The Sixth Sense).
I've personally already watched The Wrestler and whilst it's new, it's brilliant and I'm sure it will maintiain it's Top 250 status for years to come.

Biggest surprise for me was the lack of The Notebook.

Yep. And the thing is, the ones you've seen I would say 80% of them are bound to be brilliant anyway and you'd want to watch them again. Stuff like 12 Angry Men is that good I could literally watch that every day.

Well, I'm another film done, this time Snatch, one of my favourite British movies purely for the brilliantly funny script and Brad Pitt hamming it up as One Punch Mickey. Legendary stuff from Dennis Farina too.
Don't know what I'll be watching tomorrow, opened the DVD cupboard which is 3 rows deep and 2 shelfs, around 300-350 DVD's and without pulling any out I grabbed 15 movies from the 250 out of the front :o.
I've seen 87 of 'em, but some of the classics I haven't... I don't have time to watch 'em all unfortunately I couldn't do the remaining 163... Though it has made me want to watch them and see the "classics" so to speak. I shan't be taking part, but certainly will acquire some of the movies. :)

There's no way I could manage to watch 5 films a week, especially not this year as I have to get married. Hell, I don't think I'll get close to watching the 134 I've not already seen without the use of redbull and pixie sticks;D
There's about a dozen films on the list I've seen and wouldn't want to waste time watching again as well. There's too much interesting cinema out there to watch a dull film twice.
So I'll be filling in the blanks where I can and at least that way I can decide whether to take issue with any of your reviews.;)
Is anyone else active on Flixster? I have a profile from my FB account. Is there a way of setting up a BD group so that we can see what we all thought of the films on the list?

Well i've got 'The Usual Suspects' and 'Schindlers List' on the way to me on rental, and I have tomorrow off, so I should be able to watch them during the day.
Watched 'The Fellowship of the Ring' last night, so that's one out of the way. I only watched it just before Christmas, but I could watch that film twice in a day quite happily and not get bored of it.

I think I'll watch Magnolia tonight. Fancy a laugh watching Tom Cruise witter on about worshipping the cock.
Watched the French Connection, never got round to watching it, great film, loved the good cop bad cop routine and I was expecting something bigger than the film rather than 3 french blokes doing all the smuggling
Oh and this is the easiest way i have found to keep track.

Nice idea, works well.
Everyone should do this, makes it very easy :).
Just create an "IMDb Top 250" catagory, then go to the movie you've watched, click "Add to My Movies" and move/copy it into the 'IMDb Top 250'.
Make that catagory public and we can all see :).
Then post your link here and I'll add it up top. Makes it easy for those who don't have a site to post it on :).
Yup, I was on IMDB and remembered they had a my movies and you could make a custom folders.

I didn't mean for the list to be updated regularly, I'm just pointing out that films that are fresh in the publics imagination are often voted higher than they otherwise should be. I haven't watched any of those films (The Dark Knight, WALL:E and Let The Right One In are also 2008) so they might be fantastic but I've got a bit of a hard time believing that 7 of the top 250 films were released last year.
However as you say it is personal preference and there are some omissions that annoy me but overall it is a fairly balanced list. I'm not going to take part in the challenge as such but I'm definitely going to try and tick off as many of the 250 that I haven't seen as I can over the next year and I'll stop carping on about the bias towards recent films. :)
edit wtf french connection is not in the top 250 ? oh well i am sure I saw it listed in the top 250
I'm pretty sure it was, it's currently on 7.9 so chances are it has had a few people (wrongly) voting it down from the heights it should be at, I'd personally give it an 8 or a 9 - most likely depending on the film I'd watched previously as that gives me a rough comparison.
A quick question does anyone know of a way of searching sky 's movie listings using the top 250 list without typing each film in?
I'm split between keeping sky movies or ditching them for a Lovefilm subscription to try and get these 250 watched.

You will get some of these appear over time on Sky, but you do pay for the service. You also tend to get really good films on Film4, e4 and ITV2 and those are all free, then get a 3 month free Lovefilm trial for 3 discs at a time.
The latter is definitely cheaper being that it's free.

Try different names, different email addresses and worst case: manually enter your address and put the wrong postcode in.
All have worked for me with no problems and I've had free trials with them for a year now :)

Watched Slumdog Millionaire and I was absolutely blown away, I'm often critical of a lot of things, but I wouldn't change a single thing about this movie, it was beautiful, brilliantly acted, superb direction and quite possibly, a masterpiece in movie making. Dare I say he may have even finally surpassed Trainspotting and Shallow Grave.
Stunning, absolutely stunning.
It's 8.7 average is richly deserved and for me, is definitely in place in the Top 50.

Well, watched Shawshank this afternoon.
Wouldn't put it as the greatest film ever - but it's in my top 20 perhaps.
The lack of a soundtrack throughout intrigued me - but where it mattered it was there. Never really liked Tim Bobbins, but he worked in this role, still don't like him but he was bareable. Morgan Freeman was superb though, couldn't fault his performance at all.

But seriously I think only Two Towers is improved by the extra footage. And you won't have to get up to change disc half way through the short ones. The extended editions are worth owning for the extensive extras though.:)

Just watched Ratatouille for the first time. Long time since I watched a Pixar movie, Monsters Inc. being the last and I must say I really did enjoy it, especially coming up at the end.
I do find my attention wandered quite often through it, but I did enjoy it.
The models on the Parisian streets were definitely a high point, very detailed with some stunning textures, really mind blowing. Very well directed too.
I must get around to reviewing these films on my blog though :p. I'll do it this weekend then every weekend after I think.

I could probably go grab one of my films from home as there's nothing going on at work. At a flying club, being able to see 200 metres in front of you is kind of a good thing, I can't see anything =/
Edit: Grabbed Schindlers List, though now it's clearing up here. Typical.
Edit 2: Short and sweet, will do this properly when I finish work;
Couple of very powerful scenes, which made for quite tricky viewing, but there were a nice couple of light hearted ones as well. Bloody good film, even though it's not my type at all (no action/comedy). Hopefully the standard is like this for the year.
Points of note
The powerful scenes that really kicked were the little girl near the start screaming "Goodbye Jews", the burning of all the dead Jews, and watching them fall off the conveyor into the pit, the poisoning of the patients in the hospital to stop them from suffering being shot, and the piles of all the clothes and valuables, that the Germans took posession off. Made for slightly difficult veiwing at times. I've also seen enough 70 year old boobs to last me quite a long time.
The girl Amon was with had quite a nice pair though.
None of the above worked for me though and I got an email telling me to stop trying!!
That's a pity :( I know Nokkon got the different postcode trick to work.
Ooh just remembered one I forgot to list. When you've got an inactive account email their customer services and ask for your details to be removed from their database (I tend to say about how I don't want my details being saved), they do that np. Then wait a day and start a new account using the same details as the inactive account, they don't know you're the same person because they've deleted your details :D
The Lovefilm trials make me sound such a dishonest person :o

#122 Gladiator FiveUS 9.00-11.00
#105 Jaws ITV4 10.25-1255
We're gonna need a bigger drive ;)
Or if you want to go off challenge Thank You for Smoking is on Film4 at 9.00 right before Memento, which is an excellent film with Aaron Eckhardt about a tobacco industry lobbyist. If you like black comedies or wry satires you'll enjoy this.
Or on More4 from 10.00 to 12.45 is the eye opening Metallica doc Some Kind of Monster.
Or if you want a high power classic with Jack Nicholson in the mood to chew up dialogue, sets and co-stars as only he can A Few Good Men is on ITV2 from 9.00-11.50.

On a side note does anyone know what type of HDD goes into a sky box? IDE or Sata as ours is getting kinda full atm. Or are there external drives that you can use on it?
Also what size is ok to put into the box?

Trainspotting and 12 Angry Men done :).
I won't be doing this properly as I have already seen 113 of them (I have watch a few more but forgotten them so will probably need to rewatch a few)and I absolutely refuse to rewatch some of them :p There are also others in the top 250 that I started to watch (usually on more than one occasion) and gave up because I found them tedious. I can think of better ways to waste my time ;)
I will, however, be watching those ones that for some reason I have shamefully managed to miss. I'll try and get round to voting on them too.... http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=38450307

Worth a Mention:
Apart from that list, worth a mention is The Hurricane which is on tonight at 10pm on Sky Movies Drama with Denzel Washington.
Boxer Rubin `Hurricane' Carter dreams of winning the middleweight world title, only to be wrongfully thrown into prison for the murders of three people in a bar. While he's in jail, a young boy reads his autobiography and sets out on a campaign to free him. Acclaimed fact-based drama, starring the excellent Denzel Washington in a powerful performance which earned him an Oscar nomination, alongside John Hannah, Deborah Kara Unger, Liev Schreiber and Dan Hedaya
The Hurricane is one of my favourite all time movies. It's outstanding.
Thanks for the heads up there Nokkon.
I loved The Hurricane, its one of my favorite films, my dad bought the book he wrote after watching the film years ago.
A few more movies on in the next couple of days:
Tonight 11:30pm TCM - the Treasure of Sierra Madre
Tomorrow 11:10am TCM - The Maltese Falcon
Wednesday 21st 3:00pm TCM - Arsenic and Old Lace
9:00pm TCM - The Elephant Man
Thursday 22nd 12:55pm TCM - The Philadelphia Story

As far as I'm aware you can watch either, I sometimes feel you miss out slightly on some of the nuances of speech when watching dubbed versions but you tend to miss less of the action through reading subtitles so I guess it probably works out.

Yep, it's one of those films where the first time impact is much stronger than repeated viewings offer. Some films are better after multiple watches, some are detracted from, sadly Fight Club is the latter, however still a very, very good movie none-the-less purely on the backs of Norton and Pitt (although I don't think it's the best performance from either, American History X and Twelve Monkeys for me respectively).
American History x is hard to beat.

I'm not sure but often (always?) with brilliant films they actually involve you on an emotional level and that is somewhat more taxing than most average films will ever achieve.

How's everyone doing, I'm not getting through them as fast as I thought. Being in the right mood for a film it seems is very important. However to kill a mocking bird almost killed me. I struggled to get through this. It doesn't interest me at all and tbh bored the hell out of me.

Right, who's giving this a shot for 2010?
Would it make it easier to see the top 100 rather than the top 250? One film every three days on average is already pretty difficult, especially if you're watching other things as well.

Perhaps, but there are some stonkingly good films that are rated below 100.
Well I'm doing the top 100. If I get further then happy days. :)

Right, who's giving this a shot for 2010?
Absolutely. :) Added it up and did 212 in a year. Unemployment can be useful... ;) Inbetween the films I did watch Friends S1-10, West Wing, Futurama, Red Dward, Young Indiana Jones and the Godfather trilogy *several times with that one* so there's plenty of time to find.
Tempted to try the bottom 100 as well, just to see how bad they are. :D

Yup, I'm going to see what I can achieve. Probably won't see em all, but at least I'll have broadened my horizons.

Cheers Mr Wud!
Heads up: Psyco is on Sky Sci-Fi and Horror in a little while if anyone wants to watch/Sky+ it. I'm sure it'll be round again.
I may set aside tomorrow to watch the extended LOTR trilogy - three down on day one! :D

Here's a spreadsheet I put together of the top 250 as of today:

Last night I added the top 100 to My Movies on my IMDb account and will start moving them to the watched list as I get through them. Finished watching Fellowship this morning and now onto The Two Towers. :)
I may have a go for the top 100 and then see how far through the year I am :)
Watched Se7en and The Departed today. Not sure I can keep this rate up though! Plus, how long are some of these movies?! The Departed was two and a half hours. So are 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' and 'The Dark Knight'. 'The Sting' is more than two hours, as is 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Can't wait to watch 'Das Boot' all the way through again! :/
Not a big film fan but was surprised to see that I have seen 24 of them

That's one of the main reasons I won't be attempting it officially, there are some films that are absolutely worth 2+ hours of my life and I'd be happy to rewatch them on that basis but there's a significant number who've mistaken quantity for quality. It's a phenomenon that appears to have got worse in recent years, to the point where I'm as likely to check the running time as I am to check the rest of the blurb on the back.

A friend and I are planning doing the AFI list from 2008, Top 10 of 10 genres (http://connect.afi.com/site/PageServer?pagename=100yearslist) but we're going to do the nominees so theres 50 films from each genre. Hopefully going to do 150 in a year or so and just work through the list till we're done.

Especially if you only plan on doing the winners in a year, 100 films is a much more achievable goal.

Movie or mini series? I may go for the mini series - it is quite long though. :D
I've yet to get my hands on the mini series. I have the whole year to get hold of it though - and may leave it 'til last since I saw the film so recently!
Watched The Matrix and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly today (that's not one film!). Getting through them!

What's The Good, The Bad and the Ugly like? It's one on the list I've not much interest in watching, despite it's rating.
Superb. The guy who plays Tuco (Eli Wallach - The Ugly) is incredible. You just have to be in it for the long haul. There's no dialogue for about the first ten minutes, just long, silent, moody shots. These are interspersed with moments of extreme speed and sound throughout the film though, especially in the standoff at the end. Of course, the music is amazing - now pretty much the quintessential Western theme.

Eli Wallach is amazing, he's had a very interesting life too and still acting now at the age of 94. One of my favourite performances from him is as the neighbour in The Holiday, which seems odd to say considering it's a romantic comedy, but he's brilliant in it.

Saw (500) Days of Summer yesterday. I'm not sure why it's in the top 250. It's not bad, it's just average. I'll post a review up in the rate the last movie you watched thread.

I felt very much the same way. There's even talk the JGV may get an Oscar nomination for it? It's all very bizarre as watching it, it just felt like pretty much any other run of the mill rom-com.
Now seen WALL-E, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Alien. :)
Saw (500) Days of Summer yesterday. I'm not sure why it's in the top 250.
Because it's new.
IMDB is now a victim of its own success in many ways because the ratings are becoming increasingly influenced by the sort of person who sees a film at the cinema, thinks OMG WOW BEST FILM EVER and immediately rushes to vote it 10/10. As films get older and the excitement dies off a bit the ratings slowly drop.

For those of you doing this Requiem for a Dream is on iPlayer. That said be careful what you watch ;)
It's a film deservedly in the top 250. However, it's a film I wish I had never seen. I know it's only a film but the emotions which it brought out in me were real. It's got some horrible scenes in it and I personally found it very depressing. I wish I could erase it from my memory, but I know loads of people think it's one of the best films they have ever seen. So just be aware of what the content is before you watch it :)

I didn't think it was all that amazing a film but I can't now think of Jennifer Connelly without thinking of a three word phrase, two of the words being the same. To anyone who has seen the film you'll probably understand exactly what I mean but I don't want to reveal it for those who haven't watched it yet, it does somewhat ruin the chances of me ever taking her seriously as an actress though having those few words running though my head.
Watched two films today I'd rate 10/10. The Sting and Leon.

I know exactly what you mean! I do the same.
Just watched my 20th film! Saw Avatar then put The Dark Knight on.
Watched Chinatown and Once Upon a Time in the West yesterday. Chinatown was more like a very long episode of Columbo, and OUATITW was in a similar style to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly but not as good. Great direction but a very complicated story that did it no favours. Claudia Cardinale is amazing though!
Takes me to 25, though I have watched Unforgiven and The Great Escape since then. They're not in the top 100 but might be in the top 250; The Great Escape definitely is.
Yes, will probably try and do top 100, then the next 50 and so on up to 250. Just received word that City of God and Das Boot miniseries are on the way!

Watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button last night.
What a sentimental pile of pants.
I didn't care about a single person - when the Daisy died I felt jealousy as she'd escaped the banality of it. Then I found out it was written by the guy who wrote Forrest Gump - which explained a huge amount.
Chop an hour out of the film and I'd think more of it...It's far too long, far too banal and twee.
Oh - and someone give Cate Blanchett a double whopper meal...

Just added up how many of the top 250 I've seen already this year....
Up to 72...
Someone please, find me a life on amazon or ebay.... I've searched and found nothing.
I've done 56/100 so far. Last night was The Great Dictator (10/10), and I have La vita e bella (Life Is Beautiful) to watch tonight. :) Once I've done these I'll go for the top 150, and so on.
Well it took me six weeks but I finally watched it! Now on 60/100.
I'm lacking here.. I've done 108 of the top 250.... need to get my bum in gear as I really want to finish this this time round!

According to Lovefilm rental list, I'm on 199 of 250... something like 10 of the remaining 51 aren't available and I've had to 'aquire' them elsewhere.
I need a job... I have far too much free time.

There used to be a website out there where it'd read in the current top 250, then you could click on the ones you've seen.
ahh I understand now... you'll need the IMDB my movies, you need to register though and it will not be totally accurate for this challenge if you look at the current top 250...
Linky to register for my movies (https://secure.imdb.com/register-imdb/register?why=mymovies)
For those who want to eventually get through all of the 250: Citizen Kane (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b010w84m/Citizen_Kane/) is available on Iplayer until 10:59PM Tue, 10 May 2011.
I've tried watching it a few times and tbh found the first 15 minutes hard work so this was the first time I actually decided to watch it all. Typical that I was too tired and fell asleep 20 minutes before the end, I'm going to watch the ending now. Though from what I have seen so far, although it had some classic moments I just don't see why it is still rated so highly. A good film after all this time? Yes. One of the greatest of all time? Not for me.
