Spotted on Robert Llewellyn's Twitter feed:

bobbyllew We are making 4 new episodes of Red Dwarf, with original main cast, 2 eps recorded in front of audience. Not seen scripts yet.

Woot, two in front of an audience should hopefully suggest a much improved Red Dwarf this time! :)

Lets hope it actually happens this time - this wouldn't be the first time some sort of Red Dwarf revival had surfaced.

I effing love Red Dwarf too which is why I wish they'd leave it to rest instead of flogging another two episodes out of it that I'll try and pretend never happened, as I have done with all of series VIII. :(

The writing on 8 was superior to 7, and had loads of the Lister-Rimmer 1-2s in the barracks that made the original series. Just a shame they changed the dynamic a bit too much. I sincerely hope they go back to the setting of the original series, but wouldn't count on it. :(

Aye - series 8 made me laugh lots, but it wasnt red dwarf - it wasnt about the last human and his band of oddbods; it was a comedy star trek type thing.

Really?
Series VII was largely disappointing but had 'Stoke Me A Clipper' and 'Blue' which made up for the other six being a bit below par. And the imortal line 'Are you sure, sir? it does mean changing the bulb.' ;D

I honestly can't remember any decent moments from VIII although some of the truly dreadful ones still stick in the memory.
EDIT: Wait the tap dancing hopper was VIII wasn't it? Ok, one good moment. ;)

I'll watch the new series for sure but my expectations will be lower than Listers hygiene standards.

The bulb line is series 6 surely? Series 8 had the brilliant time-delayed fight, culminating in the best pratfall I've ever seen as Rimmer gets an invisible gut-punch then an uppercut. :D

I thought that was incredibly cringe-worthy.

For me, Red Dwarf died at the end of season 6. I'll watch this but i have no hope whatsoever of it being any good.

[EDIT] And yeah, i'm fairly certain the bulb joke was season 6, iirc it was in 'Sirens'

I think the big bonus this time around is that they're filming it in front of a live studio audience, something they've done with every series but the last two, I think in no small part because the last two had an over-abundance of CGI. I've always found the model work to be part of the charm of Red Dwarf.

And it looked more real as well. The CGI just doesn't cut it.

Edit: Umm... because it is real I guess!

Indeed. When are directors going to realize that models > cheap CGI.

I always liked it when Starbug used to bounce off the doors as it was coming in to land or going out. The models rocked!!

Ah haaa! I loved that :D He falls brilliantly!

Such a fan od Red Dwarf (a lot of us are it seems!), I'll take what I can get and give them the benefit of the doubt in the mean time. So much good stuff from it.

Are there actual new eps then? I somehow ended up with the impression that it was mostly a few in-character 'best bits'-type shows.

Series VIII certainly had its moments, but as someone who tended to dip in and out and not watch it religiously (woe betide me), it wouldn't be fair of me to make a comparison.

Series 7 was pretty bad by Dwarf standards. Series 8 was much better. Back in front of an audience and the writing was much better - plus the Rimmer and Lister together again in prison was great. Rimmers introduction into Series 8 was one of my favorite moments for a long time.

I can't really think of much that was good about Series 7 off the top of my head. Ummmm.... Actually - the extended version of Tikka to Ride was alright - but the matter paddle couldn't travel in time before... ;)

Also, if you watch Series 8 - Back In the Red parts 1, 2 and 3 as a feature length show it certainly holds together nicely.

Both Tina and I are dancing in the streets right now!! Anything to do with those four nitwits has been entertaining at the least if not downright hilarious. Many moons ago we heard about a Red Dwarf movie supposedly coming out, but I never heard anything more about it. We've been waiting with credit card in hand to buy it if it ever showed up...

Oh, and Tina just asked if anyone knows where they sell season I through VIII on DVD???

It's pretty much been shelved. No matter what happened they just couldn't get the money together to film it.
Script was ready, cast were ready.... They even had a new Kryten suit built for Robert - all wasted now.

I think as with most comedy shows, they start fantastic and it's always hard to continue with that level. Personally I like all the series' but there are ups and downs.

I look forward to any extras quiet anticipation :D
