View Full Version : Kick boxing
I know there was a little bit of discussion on this in the "marital" arts thread but I wanted to post and see if anyone has more info.
I have spoken on and off about this with Mic for many years but have never gone. A leaflet came through my door yesterday advertising the Southern Kickboxing Academy and on looking at the site (http://www.southernkickboxing.com/) it seems they have a female only class just round the corner from my house.
I am very uncertain about this as I have less than zero confidence anyway and have no-one I could go along with in order to be my backbone. I have no coordination and know that I am very far from being fit and I've heard you need both for this.

DO IT !!
It will help with your fitness and will also improve your self confidence.
I've got rubbish co-ordination and I manage to do it ;)
Go along and try it out, what's the worst that could happen ?
I'd definitely recommend it too. :) you get a great cardio workout and can punch/kick out your frustrations raaaaaaaaarrrr!
Some clubs can be tres expensive though :/ thats the downside, luckily one of my sister gyms does it as part of the class programme, but haven't been for a while as my partner seems to be ignoring my emails.. hmmm..

From my experience Tak, Martial Arts can often help you achieve some of the things you say you don't have as long as the teacher is good. Also if the teacher is worth his or her salt they should have some experience in coaching you at your own pace without feeling too pressurised.
Might be worthwhile giving them a call and asking if they do any taster classes or if you can go along just to see there set up. Nothing ventured nothing gained ;)
The flyer says that the first class is free.
Can anyone describe to me what goes on in a class? What sort of things does it entail?

I would imagine every class is slightly different, I do Muay Thai which is a little different but there's what we do :-
Warm up ( jog around the room and do press ups/sit ups etc )
Bag work ( different combos of punching and kicking )
Pad work ( same as above )
Sparring
Stretch off
Every week it's slightly different though.
When I first went the instructor spent a good 10 mins with me taking me through the basic moves and making sure I was happy with what I was meant to do before being let loose on a bag ;)
It will feel clunky, you may feel a little awkard as it will feel unnatural but it is SO worth putting the effort it. I cannot describe how good I feel coming out of a class and how amazing it feels when you land a punch/kick properly and you really connect with the bag/pad.
Seriously, please give it a go but go a few times. Don't just try the one class ( unless you really hate it of course ;D )
Any more q's just let me know and I'll try my best to answer :)
I think its probably slightly different on each class, but basically it would consist of:
1) The teacher should ask if anyone has any injuries/has done this before etc.
2) Warm up. Jogging round the room, jogging on spot.
3) Learning how to punch (sounds stupid I know), you learn hooks, jabs, uppercuts etc also keeping your guard up.
4) Learning how to kick - these are all done in class formation btw, learning how to stand and move to keep the cardio up.
5) Then you might be told to partner up and get gloves and pads. The tutor will tell you what you have to do - one person will be the fighter and the other the punchbag (lol) you should be told how to absorb the punchs and kicks as the punchbag and what punch/kick combinations to do.
6) Then you will change positions.
7) You will do maybe a couple more combos.
8) Group cardio/exercise
9) Warm down/stretch out
Well thats what one of my classes consisted of. I think the instructor was a bit worried because I was the only girl there when I went.
Might try boxercise at my local gym. But want to do kickboxing again.
May aswell go to the free one though Sam :D

Lol.. Piggy posted too :D
PS don't uppercut yourself... its not clever or funny.
Sparring.. yeah thats the word I wanted... doh!

I've lost count the amount of times I've uppercutted myself ;D
I was highly un-coordinated and severely lacking in self confidence when I started Judo, both disappeared surprisingly quickly. I'm sure the same will be true with Kick Boxing.

I do Wing Chun Kung Fu, and I live for the sparring, fantastic ! ! !
My gym is actually starting classes on a monday night (is there something in the air? nothing before and then everywhere all at once). It'll cost £2.50 a session as they are bringing in an outside instructor but that is still cheaper than the £5 a session at the other place, and at least I already know the gym so should be a bit more confident in going.
First session is 6:30-7:30 monday and I am considering it :)

LOL
If I go, my plan is thus: I am meant to finish work at 4 but can easily do an extra hour and leave at 5, get to the gym and get changed by 5:15 so I can do a gentle workout out, maybe use toning tables for stretching etc for an hour and be warmed up but not knackered come 6:30.
would never get there on time :(

You must do it Tak! :D
Kick boxing is so much fun and will really boost confidence! You don't have to be super fit to do it and most of it is likely to either be on your own or in a group, so going alone makes no difference. Although you'll be partnered at times, since you'll be forced into it you'll quickly make new friends too without actually having to make the first step to chatting to someone :)
Well the warm up virtually killed me but I did have some fun after that.
I know the answer is probably don't be daft but does anyone know any exercises which aren't press-ups but will help work the same muscles that are used in press-ups? I could only just manage one girlie on knees one which is outstandingly pathetic :/
Kell_ee001
26-01-2009, 21:35
These (http://www.thefitmap.co.uk/exercise/tools/videos/arm-exercises.htm) will give you a good start :) Don't forget you can replace the actual bar weights if you don't have any at home with something else :)
Piggymon

YAY You went ! \o/
Keep it up! It will all start to come together, the feeling when you connect with the pads/bag properly is awesome :)
For your press ups, you can't do much better than just keep practising the pressups. I used to be totally rubbish, could only manage a few girly ones. Now I do 20 proper ones :D
Other than practising you need to work your chest muscles more ( fnar ) Incline BP is the best thing I think
http://www.exrx.net/WeightExercises/PectoralClavicular/BBInclineBenchPress.html
Can do this with either the bar or dumbells.
Just keep practising though, you'll soon improve :)
I'm with Piggy - the more you do the better you get!
Keep on with the Box Press ups (knees under hips) to start, making sure your weight is in your hands and not back in your knees (cheating!), move onto 3/4 press ups where your knees are further back and every few weeks try a full press up. You'll be able to see your progression from how that full press up looks and feels!
Yay well done for going!
Hate pressups and plank :p
BB x
But they're so good for you!
If you keep your feet wider apart in full press-ups, it makes it slightly easier. I can't do many, but I can do them now after the last Body Pump which we've just finished. It was a bit mind over matter and I'm rather proud of myself :D
**** planks though, especially those climbing the stairs ones. **** them in the FACE!

Jacknife! I make my circuit class do this! I also make the advanced ones do Pike - where just your feet are on the ball and you push your bum right into the air! Great for balance!
I have no balls so I'm safe from that :p
I'm still broken :( I got stuck in the bath last night as my triceps cramped so I couldn't push up and my thighs are dead and didn't want to take my body weight :o I've also been sneezing lots which isn't good as my sides and stomach cramp up when I do :o I wanted to practice press ups at home this week before next mondays class - don't think that's gonna happen :/
I'm not surprised! You probably used muscles that you didn't know you had because its a fully body workout ;)
You have to work through it! No gain no gain and all that?! :D
BB x
48 hours later is always worse for me! Then it's all better!
Tip: Cool shower after exercise, hot bath the day after! Science behind it is that the cold shower will constrict your blood vessels so stopping lactic acid flooding the muscle, and the hot bath the next day then opens them wider allowing toxins to be flushed and so avoiding so much muscle stiffness. Don't know if I believe that (some people claim it is rubbish, I always like to try everything to see what works for me though!) but I know I'm definitely less sore when I do it so am happy to do it!
You could have told me that before!!! :p
Kell_ee001

Nah, we all have to go through it at least once ;D On the brightside though, once it wears off you realise how much you must have worked out and you'll feel even better :D
I'm still slightly aching from Boxing class on Friday :/
Can you still make your class tonight Sam?

Easily - its 2 minutes away from work, I'm just trying not to chicken out :p
Edit:
Thought I would elaborate a bit - that one class last monday stopped me being able to gym at all during the week, I didn't stop aching until saturday - I guess I'm worried that missing my normal cardio will affect what I am able to achieve this week :o

I doubt missing a cardio session would set you back noticably, it might even leave you feeling more rested.
I hope you go this week, and I hope you enjoy it as well. If you're uncertain about how knackered it will leave you then ease up a bit and gradually increase how much effort you put in, week after week.

I did enjoy the class even if I didn't enjoy the agony I was in the following days so I think I will go again (of course I'm assuming its on - I don't know where the instructor comes from and there is a fair bit of snow about)

I usually find the best way to combat the aches is to attack them head on with the normal routine :D
No good if you are cramping though :/
Wish I had a kickboxing class near me.. /looks

When I first did Body Pump, I didn't think I'd ever be able to go to the gym again. My legs felt like they were made of wood and everything REALLY hurt. I told my mate that if it felt like this every week, I'd have to give up. He told me to persist and I was fine the next time. I still get a bit achy if I up my weights - my abs and shoulders were really achy yesterday, but it only lasts a day or so and then I'm good again :)
Well I went and I am again broken but random bits of me aren't trying to cramp up when I so much as breathe so I'm already doing better than this time last week. Discovered I am carp at dodging and and guaranteed to end up with a black eye sooner rather than later. Class size dropped from 12 to 6 with there only being me and 1 other female.
No worries - I got smacked in the face when I was doing my Boxercise PT. Makes you quicker!
I got him back mind. ;)

I always think that some people want to spar with effort and others aren't really happy doing so, I usually see how they hit me then return the favour so they're not uncomfortable.
Have to admit I'm not looking forward to or am particularly interested in sparring other people, I just enjoyed the pad and air work :o

(I know this is going to get some giggles or smutty replies - just know that I have already thought of them :p )
I have thin weak wrists - I hadn't realised this until I was hitting the pads. At the moment the RSI in my right wrist is bad and I have reduced flexibility in it; I tried just some wussy girlie pressups last night and just being in the stance without doing anything is painful.
We have a squiggy ball thing which is meant to help those muscles, just wondering if anyone else knows of something I can do.
If you're going to KBing tonight, you might want to ask for some handwraps to wear under your gloves.
I actually use my old weights gloves instead of Hand wraps, as they are easier to get on/off and offer the support I need.

Those things are great. Build up finger strength and wrist strength. I have one for building up finger strength for guitar stuff originally. Both times mum broke her wrist she's used it as part of her physio to build the strength in her wrists up. The physio at the hospital loves it and was looking at getting some for use there with patients.

Punching isn't actually the problem at the moment, it is bending my wrist and putting weight on it when doing press ups.

EG do you do anything for your shins?
EG do you do anything for your shins?
nah mate, kicking the thai pads is a good way to harden them. tbh sparing with shinpads takes alot of the pain out of it
So after my worrying there was no sparring this week but he has said he will be bringing the extra gloves and stuff for next week :/ I still really do not want to do it, it just doesn't interest me and I would rather not take part :/ The class advertises "optional light sparring" so I am hoping I can speak to Dale and just do some extra pad work or something instead.
Tonight's class was good fun. We did some very painful stretching (discovered my left leg can bend a hellova lot more than my right) and lots of kicking sets, we also did more pad work which is probably still my favourite part of the class and I feel I get a good workout from that part too.
I have been getting very sniffy the past couple of days and thought that I had the beginnings of a cold but I've been ignoring it with the hopes my body will realise I don't want to be ill, instead it has decided that it is going to give me a sinus infection and since about 4pm I've been feeling like I've been punched in the nose (much to Dale's amusement). At least I know now how hard it is to concentrate on hitting and kicking and reacting when your eyes are watering and your whole face is burning in pain.
Ouch, you poor thing :( The main issue I have when I get sinus problems is that I lose my sense of balance and I feel really dizzy if I move my head too fast or bend over etc. It's bloody horrible. Hope you get better soon.

sparing is great, i bet if you tried it, you would love it.
getting hit hard in the nose is the worst bit. at our gym people generally avoid hitting each other in the nose as it hurts, but if you get hit hard somewhere a nose punch usually is enough to mkae them think twice about bullying you
like i say people wont really hit you in the nose, but if you are worried about head shots, a full face gaurd with nose protector like this one would be perfect and avoid you getting your lovely nose hurt :)

A few people have said that but I'm just not convinced :/ Nothing about it appeals to me :/ What is odd is that I have no problems having a go at 6'6''+ bloke in a mosh pit (without alcofrol before anyone implies it) but don't want to take part in sparring in a semi controlled environment  I don't make sense even to me

Before I did my first sparring I was REALLY nervous. I thought everyone would be watching and I'd just stand there and not know what to do.
I got twatted in the nose which did hurt but it was more a shock than anything and whilst I did forget quite a bit of the technique, I did keep moving, kept it going and really enjoyed it :)
I did Muay Thai tonight and I love it very muchly.
I escaped the sparring again :p There were 4 new people in the class today (1 of which will definitely not be back) so Dale said he'd hold off the sparring for another week or so. I won't be going next week and I think I'm actually going to miss it

I ache today so I guess it was a good workout. Mind kept wandering but did do enough to make myself feel light headed and dizzy a couple of times.
I have a proper attendance card now too. Dale did ask if I wanted to be put down for grading in 12 weeks times but I said no thanks. He has said he'll ask me at 4 week intervals as that is where he can slot me in so it isn't completely out of the question in the future, just not right now.
He suggested (in between laughing) that I look at getting some taekwondo gloves to wear under the other gloves as where my hands are so small I can take the punching gloves off without undoing them and he said they will probably start to rub and make my hands sore. He said its best to go and try them on as I'll probably need kids gloves :o
