View Full Version : Power cable
Bought a printer t'other day and having opened it, it's got a Euro power cable.
One end is a C7 Connector (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEC_connector#C7_and_C8_connectors) and the other is a Europlug (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europlug)
If I can find another cable with a C7 end, with a proper UK plug, is it safe to just use that?

Yeah in most cases as long as the electronics are designed for 240 50/60 which i guess they are since almost everything is now days. Also if you're not going to unplug in, its a bit ghetto but open the plug with a ground pin (upside down 3 pin plug, scissors whatever its not live) and just push (quite hard) the two pin in, it'll fit and it'll work just fine :) I did this with my reserator for yeeears and if you're not gonna unplug things all the time its easy and fine :)

I'd be kinda shocked if something that came bundled with a europlug wouldn't work on 230v!
If you can't find a spare, something like this will sort it...

I always keep a few of those in the house as they're handy for this very reason. Might find them cheaper than that elsewhere.
The old printers lead looked the same so I just used that. It hasn't exploded yet.
What doesn't work though, is the USB, oddly. Windows just point blank refuses to acknowledge its existence.
Rebooted the PC? One of my PCs regularly gets into conditions where it won't acknowledge anything plugged in via USB. Only a reboot sorts it.
Failing that, find another cable (the old printer?), or another PC. :)

Just covering my ass in case things blow up for no reason :p Mistaken europlug or what not i dunno...
PC has been rebooted several times and the USB cable is the one that was functioning perfectly 30 minutes beforehand with the old printer.
Can't figure it out. Don't even get the little jingle to indicate something has been plugged in.
I've given up on it for now, will sort it tomorrow.

I'm sure you've already tried this but if not then try using a different USB port, sometimes they are very temperamental about whether they will or won't pick up a new device on first use.
I've got it working now but oddly, only the USB Hub will work, all the other USB ports have totally died regardless of what I put in them.
The two on the backplate of the motherboard I know dont work because someone beat them in with a cable the wrong way and they're actually broken. However, there is an expansion plate with two ports on it that is connected to a riser on the motherboard. The USB hub is plugged into one of these and the old printer was plugged into the other. Similar set up with a pair of front USB ports but I dunno if those have ever worked as theyve never been used...
Now though, for some reason none of them work apart from the USB hub and the port that is plugged into. Baffles me frankly. I find it a bit of a coincidence all the USB would break just as I removed one printer and replaced it so i'm guessing somewhere along the line of uninstalling the old printer, it naused something up.
