View Full Version : New game - Guess the repair bill!

Right I genuinely don't know what it is yet as I couldn't be bothered asking (it needs done anyway).

Dropped my car into the garage today with a list of things I wanted them to check out, lets see who guesses closest when I pick it up on Monday evening.. They have identified the causes and ordered up parts.

Main points:

1. Toyota Aygo/manual (2006).
2. It's at a non-Toyota garage (yes I know this can be daft.)
3. It's at Arnold Clark (yes I know this is even more daft.)

Repairs to faults:

1. Water ingress through aerial in roof.
2. Trouble selecting 2nd gear.
3. Engine noisy when clutch pressed down (probably clutch linkage - guessing).
4. Full MOT (passed btw.)

Always fixed my cars myself in the past so I've no idea what the bill will be but I'm guessing it won't be cheap. Closest one wins, erm, er bragging rights. :D

Entries are for the TOTAL COST including MOT etc.

when we had a noisy clutch we were quoted 2k ish to take the gearbox out and find the fault. new gearbox and installation would be another 3 - 4k. I should imagine. I reckon Kate's estimate isnt far off :p
Our solution? Have someone drive up your backside and write the car off, getting a dcent market value price for it. :)

I recon because it is an independent it'll be around £3-4k

Noisy gearbox when Clutch is in means the Thrust bearing is knackered, They will ring you & tell you that there is No point taking the gearbox out & changing the Thrust bearing without doing the Clutch plate, They are Correct.
Cost 250 quid all in.
With the other bits & bobs it will add up to slightly short of 400 quid SO I will say £379 of your quids.
If they are a Decent garage it will come to 243 quid All in.

I'm going to say £590 all in.

Having had plenty of first hand experience of Toyota parts prices even something as simple as a rubber seal will still be at least a few quid.

I'm going to go for £550ish total and the roof will still leak afterwards.

Bloody hell, that's rather steep for what sounds like a new gear linkage, a little seal and a clutch linkage. Thank god I have a mechanic who's easily bribed with food and norks :D

MOT + Water ingress too, but yeah steep and to top it off it won't be ready until tomorrow evening now. Lazy sods. So now I've to try and either take a day off or find a way to get to work by combination of buses and trains

Complained to manager, usual BS from him though and of course all of the courtesy cars are out..

You've both said my thoughts. That is just robbery. Did you get a quote for the work before dropping in? Thats a fair proportion of the value of the car.

That being said, I was quoted at £180 for rear discs and pads for the Focus (they were surprised when I said jog on).

How about £60 to change one headlight bulb on a Megane?

I had a vauxhall garage determined to get me to pay £120 for them to replace the HT leads. Screw that. Bought HT leads for £10 (or something) at Halfords and did the job myself in 10 minutes. Would have been quicker if Dad hadn't been offering 'helpful' advice and managing to cut his finger on a blunt and smooth piece of bodywork (he's talented like that)

To be fair, Renault aren't ripping "us" off as such.
In their infinite wisdom, they designed the car in such a way so to change the headlamp bulb you have to completely remove the front bumper. They do use high quality lamps, but logic dictates that some will fail.

Genius, not.

Halfmad, may I advise that you invest £15 in a Haynes manual for your voiture... or less if you can get one on Ebay

Won't do any good without somewhere to do repairs. I built 3 minis from shells on my own, I can work on cars without any problem, but at the moment I've no drive way or garage to do them. I'm not stupid enough to try and do it on the street in Glasgow and the nearest mate/relative who I'd want to trouble to use their drive/garage is 55 miles away :p

You don't have to do that.

I changed one in the car park for one of the girls in work last summer, you just need the car on full lock. It's very awkward but you definitely don't have to take the bumper off, despite what Renault tell you. I believe you DO have to remove it on the Modus though.

It can be done with the wheel on full lock?
Cool.

I was saying to Kate the other day, if you have a Megane Sport then the lower suspension and bigger wheels mean it might be too tight and the wheel will have to come off.

But yes, bloody Meganes!

Driving home tonight and what do I notice?

Yes, my frickin' headlight is out.

They wouldn't do my Megane, lol.
So, took it to a friends garage and he only charged me for the bulb. Watched him do it and what a piece of cake it is to do.....something like 2 minutes work.

Meh.
