View Full Version : Red Dwarf
I know a few Twitter-fans already know this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7851989.stm
Cult comedy Red Dwarf is returning to TV, 21 years after its initial launch.
The show has been resurrected by digital channel Dave for a two-part Easter weekend special, which sees the cast finally return to Earth.
And here's the first picture.
The cat looks a bit lined, Rimmer has less hair, Kryten is obviously in makeup so doesn't look any older and neither does Lister really.

Smeeeeeeeeeeeee heeeeeeeeeee!
I hope it is as well written as the old series. If so it's going to be awesome :D
can't wait for this. i'm not expecting much from it. As these things hardly ever turn out well. but I'm glad it brings an end to the "story".. As I'm not expecting much, hopfully it'll be better than I thought it would be. best not to over hype things and take it for what it is.

It's still lacking Rob Grant so it'll be pants i reckon
I'm open minded about it tbh. I want it to be good :D
Danny John-Jules has aged a lot but this might just be because I have seen the other two since RD, and not so much of DJJ.
no premise yet at all? can we expect the small rouge one avec crew?
Starts tonight and seeing as people are being boring and cancelled the night out. I will be watching

Hmm, that last episode sounds ominous. Like the characters are going to meet the writers and beg for another series, Alan Partridge style. :/
I lost all hope for this when I saw the photos from Coronation Street and the fact the space ship has somehow turned into a Smart Car.
I hope to god it's some cunning ploy to throw everyone off the scent so to speak but I fear it will actually be as rubbish as I expect now.

:'(
All scheduled to record, fingers crossed!
Been looking forward to this for ages. But as divine says, not got a lot of faith for the smart car Star Bug :(

Saw a trailer for it and it looked awful, but I am praying it's to it's usual standard. I frickin' love Red Dwarf.

It was never canned laughter, it was all live.

Why?
Because it wasn't funny.

Without the canned LOLs it was just full of weird awkward silences as well.

I think some bits were funny, I certainly giggled a few times as did the family but I think that without a studio audience it seemed a bit forced, there were almost pauses where laughter should be.

I suspect this one was as well, but noone laughed :p
Same thoughts here. Silence was definately not a good thing in the episode.

Craig Charles is looking well for a smackhead though.
Chris Barrie is starting to look old.

I own the same shirt Kryten was wearing at the start :(
Smeg. I didn't laugh once :/ Used to be one of my favourite shows too.
He's spot on.

red dwarf xtentended had laughter silences so im used to it. But i couldnt get used to the camera motion and angles...
I laughed at the sneeze ironing!
I hope they release it on dvd with laughter,. I feel it could be good with laughter and watched back to back.
I agree about the lack of laughter, but I liked it nonetheless and it did make me laugh. No it's not the same as it used to be, but you'd be pretty silly to expect it to be IMO. The actors and writers are 10 or so years older for a start.
I'll be watching tomorrow/Sunday anyway, that's for sure.

Goes without sayin tho really! I cant remember exactly the end of series 8. I think i need to get red dwarf on doovd!
You can borrow mine if you want. I highly recommend the commentaries - the episodes are even funnier with them all taking the mick over the top!
That was decidedly dull.. If anything the stereotypes of the characters have been made even more so, the natural flow seems to have gone :-/
Lack of laughter really sucked too.
According to Digital Spy it does improve drastically with the next episodes.

Have they explained how they managed to survive the situation at the end of s8 or are they waiting to do so for a bit o drama?
I'm not sure why they're ducking out of the way of explaining certain things, like when rimmer asked why there were two holograms she changed the subject. I'm hoping this is because it's something they want to explain in later episodes and not them poking fun of the fact they couldn't be bothered coming up with explanations to these things.
If i'm honest the last time i laughed at Red Dwarf was ocassionally in season 7, i'm only continuing to watch it still out of habit and a curiosity as to how it will all end. Saw some of the classic episodes straight after this and it made the drop in quality more apparent. I laughed so hard at 'hollow virus' i nearly injured myself, yet barely a grin in this new ep.
*Fingers crossed the next two are better* :'(
I generally agree with what has been said about the laughter/silences. But I will definately give the next two a chance.
I didn't have high expectations, and I'm glad. I wouldn't say it was rubbish, but it wasn't exactly hilarious.

I thought the point of that was she was waiting to tell him that he was being decommissioned (well, blown up ;D) in the next 24 hours and didn't want to spill the beans at that point?

I lol'd :)
I'll keep watching :)
I just watched both eps backwards since I missed the first yesterday. I couldn't really get into the first eps but the second was brilliant! Starbug on Corrie Street made me lol
God, I laughed like a drain at one part...
"She didn't see that coming. I did."
:D
Ok, I saw the first episode and was getting into it again, but then it came rushing to the end of the episode and I felt like it hit a frikken brick wall!!
Now you guys are talking about already seeing the second epi? Where's the torrent for it? ;)
ARRRRGH, forgot to watch this last night. Can you do "watch again" with Dave?????? :(

They are repeating all of them on Monday evening.
I wouldn't worry though, Dave is the king of repeat tv.
Adverts after seven minutes???? :(
The sum of the three parts was much greater than each individual episode.
Definitely. I feel redeemed in sticking with it. Final part felt much more like the Red Dwarf of old in terms of the themes, though they could have gagged it up a bit more. Slightly annoying that
we're back to square one in terms of how this bit started with the '9 years later' caption, and that the series 8 conclusion still isn't explained. But at least we know now how the other hologram was sustainable... and killable! Because it wasn't 'real'.
Fingers crossed that we get answers with a new series, or at least a special finalé. If the storyline can be given as strong a finish as this three-parter then there's certainly hope.

yep. I think it would work extremely well back to back without adverts, but we need the laughter. It just doesn't feel like red dwarf without the laughter. Hopefully be on there or as a special with dvd release.

Just watched all three and really liked it :)
The amount of Blade Runner references was awesome :D
Watching all 3 tonight at 9pm since we missed Part 2 :D
awesome. I loled hard thru part 2 and 3. Very very clever!
God, I laughed like a drain at one part...
"She didn't see that coming. I did."
:D
I sputtered my Pepsi at that part and replayed it two or three times. Tina chuckled as well. Rimmer showing balls!! ;D
But we REALLY need to go back and re-watch season 8...
But we REALLY need to go back and re-watch season 8...
It doesn't follow on, however if you have them on dvd there's an alternative ending which follows on better.
Part 1 wasn't up to much but wasn't disappointing as I wasn't expecting a lot. Part 2 was great and opened up a lot of interesting possibilities (for example Lister could have discovered that there are 2 Kochanski's in this new reality just to really confuse the hell out him, and there's also another Kryten out there) and I was really looking forward to the third part.
Unfortunately they then ruined it with an ending that was all a bit too much of a kopout for me. :(
I sacked it off after episode 1. Absolute rubbish.
Sounds like I may have been well employed sticking with it...

Give it a whirl mate, the first part felt a bit "forced", it really loosened up in parts 2 and 3. Still not perfect, but it's been a long time so it won't be.
REALLY needed the studio audience laughter, it felt a little awkward without it. I liked the Cat's moves when he came out of the TV :D

There is a version about where all 3 episodes have been edited together and the laughter track has been added. Very well done from what I've seen too.
I need a link to that.
/edit - found it ;)
