View Full Version : Spec me a phone.
Right am thinking about something a bit more than a normal phone.
iphones are meant to be crap so I keep being told, what about samsung pixon?
Its 8 megapixel camera phone which is what I will be mostly using it for plus videos and mp3.
Anyone got one? any advice on phones would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Whether the iPhone is crap or not simply depends on what you want it for I think. If you're not bothered about the things it can't do (such as sending picture messages) then it could be an excellent phone for you. Really depends on what you want from your phone.
Have you thought about the HTC phones? Something like the Touch Diamond or the Touch HD could be good for you if you want a full featured phone.

Sounds like you just want a "good" (subjective) camera phone, then yeah go for a pixon or any other generic normal phone with a big camera parked on it theyre all pretty much the same no days. Otherwise if by different you mean functionality, look at the vasssst array of smartphones out there. Depending on what you want need, symbian, windows mobile, iphone, android they all have there ups and downs. You just need to do a bit of reading up and really decide what you actually want from a phone, and if you can't really think of much just go grab a normal phone.
Personally for me atm it has to be a small symbian smartphone, i then take a real (decent) compact camera out with me when i need to take pictures as even a cheap compact will always take a better photo than any camera phone. I also use my iPod more than my phone for music because i like having my whole library with me which isn't possible with any phone on the market atm...
I want a phone with full internet on umm mp3 but doesn't need to store much, camera for me is important as I always have my phone with me but don't take digi cam that often so to be able to grab those funny/cute moments with my kids I would like to be able to do it on my phone.
Umm not sure what else, don't send pic msgs that often but I guess if I couldn't at all then I would either get used to it. maybe?
So whats your views on iphone? I know there is a thread but can't be bothered to look through it all atm (yes I am lazy :p) looked the reviews up and most of it sounds pretty good.
Will look in town after I've picked son up and see what suits my needs.
Love my iPhone, although I'm not 100% sure if I'd buy it now considering the competition but at the time it was perfect for me :)
It is flawed, lack of picture messaging doesn't bother me (I hardly ever send picture messages), but the touch controls can be irritating at times. I miss being able to text on the move as it's just too awkward to do while moving now.
Camera could definitely be better, I'm sure my old w810i was better, but it's fine for snapshots and certainly when you're looking at photos on the phone, they look fine.
Lack of multitasking is annoying too.
Plus points for me: internet's great on it, I've got the 2g version so Edge only but it's still pretty fast and wi-fi points always seem easy to find. Loads of apps, free apps at that, and very easy to get configured. 8gb mp3 player which is handy :D I can watch converted films on it which is handy for journeys. Looks cool and having been practical for years with phones, I like being shallow for once :p
However, I'd definitely look around for other phones as there are so many other phones that do all these features, as mentioned by others. :)

iPhone is good, but it sounds like you'll be underwhelmed by the camera. I'd be looking at the n95 then or n82 they've been around forever but they were so ahead of their time they're still a massive hit. Good solid camera and functional in every other way as well as being an amazing smartphone. Unless you're after something touchscreen, which means looks at the non smartphone pixon i guess (but thats all that springs to mind atm). I can think of any decent touchscreen smartphones with decent ish cameras. Although i'm not that clued up on the 100 or so WinMo phones that get released by HTC every week :p
Went into CPW and contract isn't up til march :( d'oh.
Give me plenty of time to look around, I like the pixon and the tocco oh and omina (whatever its called) the samsung ones and the LG Lunear (bah thats not what its called) Fogot all the names sorry.
The n95 looks nice too, will just keep looking until contract is up on the 26th march arghhh seems ages away lol

Out of those three the Omnia is leagues ahead of the others you've mentioned, also the most expensive. The n95 is very good value for money now days but its still right on the top of its game.
My iPhone found me a pub which did decent food this evening and directed me to it as well ;)
Shame the beer it served wasn't up to much but they didn't charge for it anyway. Horses for courses really.
i still love my TyTNII after a year, but it does seem the problem now of 'which phone!?!' to get next.
I keep thinking i want an iphone thats not an iphone. i love the simplicity of the integration of things on the iphone for quick updates to social sites like twitter n facebook - i just don't want to have to get an iphone to get said simplicity.
Its well worth looking at HTC though, as i say, my TyTNII is great - basically any phone that lets you flash the rom and has the kind of community behind it that this thing does will be great as theres constantly things to update in order to keep it on a par with the new phones that come out whilst you're stuck in that 12/18 month period after getting that 'new' phone.
This is the problem with what I want, I want a phone that I can get on here, facebook and a few other sites fast and easy and be able to browse and reply to stuff easy not like standard wap phones.
I want to be able to sit and watch my kids play at soft play centre while being able to connect to wifi lol
I want a camera and a good one as phones go that is.
Ummm can't think what else ooooh mp3.
But I am rubbish with gadgets so I need an idiot proof phone (nokia is my usual lol) hate chosing phones lol
Just want something a bit more than a phone this time, and I really want a good internet phone.
yeah, well in terms of web browsing, my TyTNII does that rather well - with Opera 9.5 for windows mobile it can handle pretty much anything i've ever tried to use online.
I would like to see something available though that (as i was getting at with simplicity) enables WM etc to upload photos etc to said social sites as the iphone does so well with its Apps.
but then after what you're saying, an iphone is going to be hard to beat as long as you forgive its crap camera; its got mp3 (ipod basically), its idiot proof (apple do all the hard (fun) stuff so you can't), and its probably one of the best 'internet phones' available.
and i can't believe i've said all that after last week a friend got an iphone and all i did was tell him how much of a fool he is for ditching his TyTNII for it without ever even flashing the HTC!!

If you want idiot proof easy and generally good features (apart from camera, its *****) the iPhone is definitely the (expensive) way forward. Otherwise you're looking at other smartphones to get the job done, which inherently will be more "complicated" for you. So you'll have to play around and see what you can do. I think personally you should look into the symbian side of thing, WinMo can get deep/complicated much faster than symbian. Nokia 5800, n95, n82, n79 (and more they're just off the top of my head) all have decent cameras good browsing, wifi and music capability (all have 3.5mm headphone i think too).

If you want wifi that rules the iphone out not so much a problem if you can get a decent contract with unlimited data.
?
All iPods use wifi (extensively) and i thought they were all sold with unlimited data tariffs? Well with o2 anyway.
Although i agree, i'd probably rather have the 5800 i think, although i wish they've ditch the silly resistive touchscreen. I'm waiting to see how much of an improvement the n97 will be, and then probably just buy a palm pre ;D I held the 5800 the other day, it felt small, but big enough to have a qwerty keypad.
It will be on o2 LP :) I can get an 8gb iphone free but £45 a month contract, I am paying £35 now so only a bit extra but not sure I like it "that much" it will be a 18month contract so I need to be 100% sure about it.
I will have a look at the nokia ones you mentioned thank you :)
I will also look at the one you have Lozza.
I'm not sure they can negotiate with the iPhone actually due to the Apple contract. You can get it on a £35 tariff, but you have to pay some upfront.

hmmm might be confusing with the blackberry storm which doesn't have wifi.
Yeah, i was thoroughly disappointed with the storm personally, well maybe thats a little harsh but i don't think it was as great as hyped.
I really like the resistive touch screen - not as much of a depression as with the storm, but it means I don't accidentally select things I don't want and i can keep my gloves on when it's cold outside and my phone will still function ;) - still getting used to it though.
You're definitely right about the cold something i haven't thought about (but living up here probably should have done!) The storms physical feedback is interesting and clever, but even simple well thought out haptic feedback is fine. I still feel capacitive apart from wearing gloves gives you such nicer control. I think i've come to feel this though because i'm always using my laptop and its touchpad and i just expect touch things to be ultra sensitive to a light touch like my touchpad when clearly resistive will never be this...
Size/shape wise I think it's exactly the same as the N73 so same as my N70 though a bit bigger than my 6110 navigator - which brings me to the fact you can't run tomtom on the 5800 yet! or any others for that matter, but Garmin, copilot will be releasing an update and there is another that works ummmm can't remember now Theres already a working version for the 5800 running around on ipmart the last time i checked, tomtom isn't so lucky right now, but to be fair garminXT actually looks better to me, and i'd use it if i could get it to play fair with my external GPS.
I'm sure if you rang them up and said you were leaving they would give you the iphone on your current £35 tarriff though do make sure they throw in unlimited data, if you don't already have it on your tarriff.
Doubt they would they're a bugger with the iPhone because apple have them all tied up in knots really, i guess theres some wiggle room but not compared to other phones.
So many phones to chose from lol
I will have a play (fnarrrrr) nearer the time with the pixon, nokia ones, and the other ones I liked the look of and forgotten names of lol.
May ask for you advice on them once I have chosen a few to pick from.
Thanks guys/lozza :D
Apart from the camera possibly being a little poor for your usage, I think the iPhone is the perfect choice. It's SMS support is basic, MMS is non-existent, but it's e-mail is absolutely superb. Exchange Support is better than my Windows Mobile based XDA which just sums it up really. Internet browsing is very very good. Not truly mobile, as it loads the full HTML where it can, but it works well with the pinch and slide gestures. Then there's the apps: Hundreds of free/cheap little applications that install straight to the phone with zero fuss. There's loads out there, from gimmicky iPint games, to useful eBay monitors etc. After a while it really does become more than a phone. With the iPod built in as well, there's not a lot it can't do. Except SatNav.
It is subjective though, it all depends on what you use, and what you don't. If you're a big texter, I'd say leave it. But if you're into e-mailing, facebooking, then you'll struggle to find anything as innovative and stylish.
Well I just sent o2 an email asking them if they can help me get an early upgrade it said this on the site "You can upgrade online if you're a Pay Monthly customer in the last month of your contract" well thats not right because I am in the last month and I can't upgrade yet :(
I told them that I need a phone as mine is broken and I need it because of school contacting me about my children and If I can not upgrade yet then I will have to go elsewhere basically.
I hardly ever go over line rental which is £35 a month and so Faysh said they will probably say kthnxbye.
If they do then who should I go with? been on o2 like umm forever bah!!
I rarely go over my limit and Orange said OK last time. They didn't this time though so I downgraded and I'm waiting for the right phone to come along.

I have never been able to understand why people use a mobile as a digital camera. Using it as an MP3 player I can understand but you can get such decent quality, very small digital cameras like the 10.1 megapixel, 4x Optical Zoom Sony DSCS950B for £100 from Amazon.

Because some people want to take snaps, and not really give a stuff about super high resolution etc? Just a point and click camera, and why not have one within the phone? Most people carry their mobile on them all the time, which allows them to snap stuff as they see it. Unless you're into photography you don't always carry around a digital camera otherwise really, do you? :)

Definitely.
Also money, I can't justify £100 on a camera that I might not necessarily use regularly. So I'd rather have an all in one tool in the form of my phone that does everything adequately or better.
Thirded. I have two digicams, but I don't carry them around unless I need them. If I need a quick snap I use the 2MP camera on my phone - it's good enough for keeping a record of something that I'd otherwise not have.

I'm similar, as in i don't carry a camera around all the time, but i never use my phone i really don't see the point. If i dont have my camera i won't take a picture :p

People say that but I never go over and always get good deals of o2.
Last year I got 200mins and 400texts for £8 a month, no handset :D
best to phone them up and ask to be put through to retentions or say your thinking of leaving due to a better deal.
Last year I just said 200mins, 200texts on 3 for £10 a month. That deal didn't even exist.

I picked up a Nokia 5800 at lunch time on a whim (I was quite happy with my 6300 but am due an upgrade so went for the logic that I could always stick it on ebay) and having only played with it for 10 minutes I'm sold!
Excellent touch screen and load of functionality out of the box. It's not quite a Jesus phone but it's bloody close and it fits in my pocket along side my Crackberry.

I wasn't happy with the touchscreen when i used it. I really wanted to like it though. For now i'm sticking to real buttons :)
I promise to update my Touch HD thread when I have the chance, I have to say though it is an amazing phone and has everything you need IMHO.
I agree with everything Craig said about cam phone, I don't carry camera all the time (like today) and sometimes you catch a moment you want to save :)
I am 99.9% sure I will get a pixon.
Thanks acidhell will ring tomorrow

Acidhell is right, ring them and say you want to cancel your contract.
You will be put through to retentions. Write down before you speak to them what you want (the phone, how many txts/minutes you want) and then tell them youve been offered that deal with *insert other service provider here* and unless they can match it you will be leaving. Worst comes to worst you leave, but I bet you can get pretty much exactly what you want out of them, I do it every upgrade. Lay it on thick about loyal customer for however many years, always pay your bill on time, how you always tell everyone how great o2 are etc etc.
They wanted to charge me £90 for my last phone (which is due for upgrade next month now - I get to upgrade after 15 months of my 18 month contract) and I lied and said I had seen it with Dial a phone for free in the newspaper, read them out some random advert from the paper and changed the details as I wanted them.
I got my upgrade for free.
Go Lom, just be evil and you can get what you want.
I haz new phone :D
Tried to get new phone thursday but was told I couldn't get one til the following day but have been too ill to go to town to get one, today I thought I'd try and go into town and get it and managed to get a pixon :D its so easy to use and I love it.
got to learn what it can do so I make the most out of it :)
Read the Goddamn manual!!!!
I have a Pixon :) Love it, just need to get rid of the T-Mobile branded firmware so that the widget functionality is unlocked and it will be even better!
