I have 500Mb of space left on my root partition on my lappy install. I need to really squeeze some more space out of this somehow :(

Basically its a 20Gb partition, with Vista and "basic" program installs (over the space of about 2 years) but i've completely cleaned it all, and i've hit a space wall... My other home partition is pretty full too, 3.xGb of about 120Gb and thats been parred down to necessities barring some recent stray downloads

So what can i get away with deleting from system folders to save space? There must be crap there i don't need? Also if i make some room on my other partition, no-one would advise me to re jig partitions would they? Disaster waiting to happen right?

Before anyone mentions it, no :p i can't be bothered with the hassle of a format, the computer works amazingly perfectly well, it just has some extra fat and it needs a simple tummy tuck, far too much hassle installing and getting everything "just right" again...

Can you post the output of 'df -h'

Done very much so, CrapCleaner and by hand literally deleting every last thing i dont need from program files, programdata and appdata...
:(

Should have mentioned this is very much a windows laptop! I just use unix partition convention best i can because it makes so much more sense, but being windows it's kinda hybrid.

D'oh, saw the words 'root partition' mentioned and jumped the gun a tad.

Rejigging partitions isn't as scary as it used to be but still not something I'd recommend on a running system.

Run cleanmgr?

Checked %temp% for anything?

Got rid of all non essential stuff?

Do you use hibernate? If so disable hibernate and you could claw back a Gb or so.

Whats cleanmgr? Is that disk cleanup? I've run that.

%temp% is pretty much as clean as you get, one folder left because i've got MediaMonkey open.

I do occasionally use hibernate, but you know what, **** it i can do without it and that'll spare me 4Gb i assume. That is a good call :)

I've used Partion Magic to rejig partions loads of times and never had a problem.

That would be my suggestion if you can "find" a copy.

Ok hibernate turned off, but i think it might have already been, i haven't saved any space :(

I can always find a copy, my problem is i have *very* little actually free space for the program to play with, which means i think i'm probably much much much more susceptible to it royally ****ing me over, which i really can't be bothered with...

:( By the lack of responses i assume i've ran out of luck. I can't believe Vista is being so fat! I thought i'd get away with 20Gb alright! Pffft.

Uninstall files for patches and the Service Pack? Log files? (I assume you've checked the advanced options in ccleaner?)

Just had a quick look and my Windows folder on Vista is 13.6Gb

Might have to have a scan through and see what I can delete.

My windows folder is 7.2Gb and Feek i don't think i looked at advanced options, trying now :)

Right yeah i'd already deleted everything CCleaner could.

Does anyone know a safe way to remove all the guff that probably accumulates with windows updates over the course of 2 years, that sounds a good port of call, i'm pretty sure i've already run something from command line that removes the **** after the major service pack. But i don't know what else like update rollbacks that i can remove or how to find them?

Turn on hidden and system files and if you're not going to be uninstalling any patches/updates then delete all the $NtUninstall directories in \windows

(assuming the filenames and locations are the same as XP)

Nope there are none there, thats why i asked, unless i've already removed all that with some else i've been messing with, who knows? Vista could be different though, anyway i'm getting ready to go out now and that is more important than the daily fight with my laptop to do what the hell i want it to do :p. If only it were a mac ;)

There is a large subfolder in Vista, winsxs that is bound to be the cause of it being so large. DO NOT DELETE IT.

My Windows Folder has somehow ballooned to 22.4GB since Tuesday!!

I started with 40GB partition and have less than 4GB left already!?!?!??

/me follows advice in thread!

Ah yes, the lovely Side-by-side assemblies folder. Microsoft claim explorer lies about its size. Microsoft, consider your bluff called. 10GB. :/ Their only redemption is that, from one of their blogs, it looks like they might have woken up and got a clue with Windows 7.

Same. I've had this laptop for a year though and it's only really become an issue because it looks like, for my sins, I'll have to install VB6, Oracle 11, and possibly VS2008. Bye bye disk space. :/

all system restore points gone? Dunno if vista has those.

LeperousDust
17-02-2009, 12:49
System restore is turned off, and i can only assume CCleaner will have removed all the gumpf it leaves around... I've given up to be fair, i get i'll just have to wait untill i really can be bothered to format. Live and learn, Vista obviously needs at least 30Gb to get along happy...

Psymonkee

got sys restore off and cleared out temp folders and now have 6GB free but still not very impressive tbh :(

I give XP a 40gb partition and I still have to clean that to try and keep it 50% (not sure if you still get a performance drop with limited space on these modern drives produced after 1990?). I'd probably invest in a new HD and give Vista 100gb.

To be honest though, I think Windows eventually consumes anything, more space just makes it take longer. And newer windows speed that entire process up.

LeperousDust
17-02-2009, 15:36
Yeah generally windows starts going a bit mental when you run out of space completely. But its got a gig to spare atm and its keeping it just about happy enough it seems.

If you've had any crash reports from Vista, have a look in \Users\<username>\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER. I just purged several hundred MB worth of trash out of there. :)

3.62GB Windows folder after 3 years with minimal efforts made to clean up.

I love XP.

QFT :D

I ran into the same issue on my laptop. Try compressing the drive (My computer --> right click C: --> properties --> compress tick box)

May run slightly slower but free'd up nearly 2 out of 10GB for me.
