Seems quality so far, levelling up is nice and quick, and the maps are fairly compact so you'll never find yourself too far away from the action. I like the perk system as it gives you plenty of ways to customise your player to your own needs. So far, highly impressed :)

Had a quick 20 minute blast last night and thought it was great. Still find aiming a bit strange on the controller...I'm pretty slow to react, but I guess it's something you get used to. Will try and grab a longer go tonight :)

I'm finding that I'm just not quick enough for online play - I sucked at CS and CS:S so am really struggling. The game looks good though, I think I'd like it even just for the offline play never mind the online stuff.

Up to rank 9 now, slowly getting better at it. I've encounterd a few people who are scarily good at the game, but I've hit a few purple patches where instead of being ranked near the bottom I've been near the top, with an even kill:death ratio. Hopefully with enough play I can be pretty good when it comes out properly. I'm now very strongly considering getting this, if I can somehow find a way to afford it.

I got my code. When I entered it today it came up, but when I clicked the download link it comes up with an error, something about data not being accessible from xbox live :(

Had a few more goes last night and starting to get the hang of aiming with a joypad. My reactions are still a little slow though which is no surprise as I don't play these types of game much.

Loving the graphics, style of play and weapons though. Killcam is great and I think the radar is good too. Doesn't always show you where the enemy are but gets updated with help from your team spotting people and outside help.

I think something has happened to my COD4 beta. For some reason, I now appear to be quite good at it :/ I've just had 4 quick matches against random Americans (who are usually very good at it), and in only 1 game out of the 4 did I have more deaths than kills (and even then it was only by a single death). In one game, for the first time in my life playing against randoms, I had the best score out of anyone, 20 kills and 3 assists against 13 deaths. Hopefully whatever has happened to my game doesn't change, I like it even more when I'm doing well! :D :D

It just takes a lot of practise, especially if you're not used to playing FPS games with a pad. Some people are just scarily good at it, making average gamesplayers like us look completely rubbish :/ Keep at it Jamie, it'll get better :)

Edit: I'll add that knowing the map inside out will double your effectiveness. You'll get to know where you can stay slightly more safe, and if people kill you and you watch the killcam, you'll know exactly where they are and you can quickly get around there for revenge. I'm just about getting to that point now with a couple of maps. :)

Reboot your router or flush it's DNS cache - maybe it's just the server you're attached to, and with any luck a DNS kick will send you to a new one.

Wooo, came top of a game for the 2nd night in a row (23 kills, 3 assists, 10 deaths), and two games in a row got a 10+ kill streak. I've never managed that on any online FPS I've played before, so I'm definitely loving COD4 so far :D

A wee hint for people playing the map which is largely set indoors (whose name I can't quite remember) - use something like a Skorpion or Uzi, they really kick ass as they're powerful and fire at quite a rate. A couple of accurate shots and people go down really easily :)

I may be taking a hammer to my 360 soon. It won't sign until Live until I do a Live connection test at which point it tells me that everything is find and dandy and then promptly signs me in.

It won't sign in until I do a test though which is quite annoying.

I'm using a wired connection with a static IP address (so no DHCP leases expiring or anything). There is only 1 profile on the hard disc (and no memory card plugged in) so it must be complaining about my profile not being able to login to Live.

Picked up a little COD4 tip elsewhere :)
On the 'overgrown' map there is what looks like a large fuel tank near the large barn. There is a long wall that runs parallel and behind the fuel tank. If you get to the otherside of this wall by walking through the wooden area at the end of the wooden bridge you will see a crate. Hop onto this crate and then hop onto the wall top (can take a few attempts). Walk along the wall (parallel to the fuel tank) to the 'L' shaped house (with the hole blown in the first floor at the end of the house). Edge as far left as you can go while still standing on the wall and jump onto the corner of the house roof. You can now run around on the roof of the 'L' shaped house.

I kept getting sniped by someone doing this so quietly followed them and watched how they did it.
Might be able to join you guys tonight. How do I join with you if you're already playing? Or can't I do that on the beta?

I've definitely seen Davey joinable playing CoD, and I remember seeing a party option on the menu so it shouldn't be too difficult :)

What one of us needs to do is go to the Party option and invite the others in. We can only have a maximum of 6 in the team, so if I know exactly who's playing then I'll create the party and invite everyone else in. I'm not sure if you all need to be on COD at the same time, but if everyone playing is online at 6:30 and in the COD menus then I'd imagine it'll work fine.

Nah, I'm only so high as I've played it so much. I'm still trying to find my favourite weapon, which right now is either the SAW or the M4 Carbine. I'd like to use the sniper rifle more, but I suck with it.

When you unlock the challenges (I forget what level it is), it's good to use various weapons to try to complete as many as possible. When you complete the first level of each weapon challenge (which is generally to kill 25 people with whatever weapon you're using) you'll unlock the Red Dot sight for that weapon, which is far better than the standard sight and makes shooting far more accurate (when you use LT to bring the gun to eye level anyway).

It won't be here until summer 2008 at the earliest. I think it was E3 this year when Peter Molyneux demonstrated the game, and confirmed then that there was at least a year of testing and tweaking to go before the game was going to be released.

Infinity Ward's own Fourzerotwo confirmed on his blog that on September 28th the CoD 4 beta level cap will increase from 16 to a rank of 25 allowing players to earn some new weapons (G3, M60E4 and Dragunov) and some new perks (Claymore X2, Slight of Hand and Martyrdom) along the way. But everything isn't peaches and cream come September 28th, because Fourzerotwo also confirmed our suspicion and announced that the CoD 4 beta will end on September 30th. This of course means you'll have only a few days to experience ranks 17 through 25, which will also require you to put down Halo 3. And we're thinking putting down Halo 3 will be a difficult task on its own, but you're a brave soldier and we trust that you'll make the right decision when the time comes.

A year on from the original thread, I could use some advice if I'm being honest :)

I am very, very tempted to buy a 360. I am primarily a PC gamer and usually turn to consoles for exclusives I couldn't get elsewhere, or genres the PC fails at (things like arcade racers). In the last gen, the PS2 was the obvious best choice. I used to have a dreamcast but the game I played 99% of the time on that was Metropolis Street Racer, which if I'm not mistaken is a game I'll just have to forget about :(

My favourite games on PS2 were Ace Combat (AC04 was the reason I bought one in the first place :D), MGS, Timesplitters 2/3, and PES. I don't currently have a HDTV, but I do have a 19" TFT for my PC if that helps.

Anyway to the point at hand... those of you who have a 360, what are the pros and cons in your opinions? Should I consider one?

The TFT would be fine for the 360, I use a 19" WS TFT to play my games on as the quality is a lot better than on my regular TV.

I'm not sure if I can do pros and cons as I'm a bit biased :p I used to be a big PS1/PS2 fan until the 360 came along and now I mainly use the PS2 just for RPGs/the FF series, as much like you, I go for consoles depending on the exclusives they offer me.

Anyways, pros and cons of the 360, as unbiased as I can make it....

Pros:

It's got the biggest game library of any current gen console.
It's got the widest range of games on any current gen console.
It's got more (and in my opinion better) exclusives than other consoles.
Xbox Live is incredible
The XBL Arcade games are brilliant
The achievement system is the best thing to happen to gaming in years
It's way cheaper than the PS3
MS are prepared to throw money at developers to secure future titles appear on the 360.

Cons:
It's not as popular worldwide as both Nintendo and Sony, which *may* be a problem years down the line unless MS sort it out
Metal Gear Solid won't be appearing on it any time soon.
You have to put up with Sony Fanboys (who I find to be the worst fanboys around).

If I think of more I'll add them in.

The biggest Con I can think of is paying for a peer to peer gaming service - ie, a Gold Live account. But it's a small price to pay really, I was a massive playstation fan and never planned to buy a 360, got one for free with a phone contract and haven't looked back, the games library is excellent, the online service is unsurpassed by anything on the PS3 and the Wii, and it's connected up the weewaa.

Just finished Halo 2, again. Damn I can't wait. Its just like a film. That ending on 2 really floored me. "I'm here to finish this fight." Yes this will kick ass! Wait what?! Credits!? Bungie you ****! I wanna know what that was, what happened to them, what the thing is in the trailer, and so on. I used a regular 17" TFT before getting the WS TFT and it was fine :) Can't remember what model number but a Viewsonic one that was a couple of years old, still looked way better than my TV ever did.

Rock solid games are fine as long as they're not cheap. It's why I loved Ninja Gaiden, it was hard as hell but I knew everything was do-able as long as I got better. Hopefully CoD4 will be the same, it's a game I'd love to 1000 :)

I must be missing something about COD4. The way you guys feel about Halo 3 I seem to be about COD4. I had a play of the beta and it seemed alright, but another random current day fps. What am I missing? This isn't fanboy Halo vs COD :) I'd just like to know cos I haven't read anything about COD4 and I know you guys don't pick bad games.

For me it's several things. The way you can customise your player. It's not simply a case of picking what weapon you want to use. As you progress and level up, you open up new weapons and perks which you can use to craft your character in a way that suits your style properly. You can choose perks which give you more health, which let you shoot harder and through more surfaces (shooting people through walls is fun!), which let you pull out your pistol and fire off some rounds before you die, and so on. You can tailor your guy exactly how you want to. Not only that, but the 3 maps included in the beta all feel right for me. The enclosed spaces of Vacant where battles generally fall in 2 areas, meaning close range powerful guns like the Mp5 or shotgun reign supreme. There's the variety of Crash which has plenty of ways around the map giving you options to sneak around and backstab people if you know the map well enough. And then there's the wide open spaces of Overgrown where you can try to find a nice quiet spot and snipe people.

Add to that a kill cam, so that whenever you die you see the last few seconds of your life through the eyes of your killer. This helps not only in helping you pin down where he was, but may also show you mistakes you've made, perhaps in popping your head out too far or similar.

And that's just a small taste of what the game has to offer. I can't wait to try the full game just to see what improvements have been made :)

For anyone just starting the game, it's much more fun if you find the sniper rifle near the crashed ship down the hill by a lake on the first level. It's slightly off the path but worth it for sniping into the base you're about to get to. :)
