I've already told you - don't tempt me!

I'll most likely end up getting a 360, but I'm trying to be a bit careful with my cash so that I can get the new car sooner rather than later.

Well the xbox360 modding scene is hotting up now along with the *cough* scene. Once this is more established then i'll be getting one, but then again I am a very naughty boy ;)

I'm more interested in the Wii if i'm honest. After having a lot of fun with the DS, i'd like to see what they are bringing with it.

Although there's no official release date for Europe yet for the Wii is there?

Q4 2006 I think. So it could be Oct 1st or Dec 23rd in time for Xmas :D

Bit late for getting around to announcing the official date isn't it? Wonder if that means it'll get delayed.

What sound outputs does the 360 have? I think I've used up all the optical inputs on my Amp but there are a couple of digital coax spare.

I heard there maybe an announcement on the 12th or 15th. October is too close, November is the PS3 launch. They should launch it a week before the PS3 just to make people choose the cheaper, better option :D

Daz
08-09-2006, 10:34
Ok, serious question time. These free 360 offers are all core's, of course, so what would I need to buy ontop of that to make me reasonably comfortable? I'm thinking hard drive & gold subs at the mo. Also, what video connectivity does it have out the box?

Burble
08-09-2006, 10:47
I believe the differences between the core and premium packs are: wireless controller (core has wired), xbox live headset, ethernet cable, HD component cable (core has a composite cable).

Out of the box, you'll just get a composite lead if you have the core package, but premium has an HD component lead.

Daz
08-09-2006, 10:54
Hmm, cant be having that. My TV will take component, DVI or VGA, and I'd better use one of them for the 360. I'd live with a wired controller for a while, have plenty of cat5 knocking about (including a box with about 60M in, some RJ45's and a couple of crimps :p), dont know if I'm bothered about a headset (would depend on how many people I actually know use it. No interest in talking to randoms).

So getting some prices off play, looking at about £15 for a component, or £20 for a VGA cable, and 65 BASTARD QUID FOR A 20GB HARD DRIVE :O:O:O

Zirax
08-09-2006, 11:05
£65 for a 20gb hdd?? Jeez talk about bending over and taking it roughly!

I'm considering getting one, i've been looking at the price of games and they are normally about £40 where I have been looking. Is this right or is there a cheaper outlet? Just looking at play.com

Burble
08-09-2006, 11:05
I've been meaning to find out which would give me the best pic - HD Component or VGA (I'm already using the HDMI & DVI inputs on the TV). I do know what the 360 will upscale DVDs when outputting through VGA, but I've already got an upscaling DVD player hanging off the DVI port so that doesn't bother me.

Haly
08-09-2006, 11:17

Daz
08-09-2006, 11:44
The media center extender is probably what's swaying me toward a 360 long term (as I have a media center, and I want to me moving out, so I can make proper use of that little niceness). If it wasn't for that I think the lack of Final Fantasy would have kept me waiting for the PS3.

Thats one very big reason why I didn't go to Uni, absolutely no call for it unless you're looking to get into programming or a very specialised area of computing. Even then with programming if you've got a good portfolio you can often get a job in the field. When I compare my financial status to those of my mates who've gone to uni and essentially just come out and done support work, I'm the best off, with better prospects. Even if you ignore the specific field of IT, I've been of a skillset and experience level capable of earning more than friends (am now on more than most of my IT graduate friends, and I'm underpaid compared to typical sector wages.)

Gameplay are very good for games and consoles, excellent delivery times and good prices. The games I recommend for you are Oblivion (FPS+RPG), Call of Duty 2 (FPS), Perfect Dark (FPS), Dead Rising (Zombie splatterfest), and Saints Row (GTA style game that betters it in several areas). All will keep you busy for some time :)

I'm highly likely to get a 360 now, but I want a laptop first. On the subject though, what's the most cost effective way of getting Live membership at the moment? I know there are a couple of cheap (~£15) games that come bundled with 12 months.

There were but you'd need to open an XBOX account and then port it over to the 360 account.

Not really, I found porting over my Live details to be quite simple. Of course, it all depends on you having access to an Xbox to register your details in the first place.

Component will rock. IIRC that's what MB is using and the picture was very good. If you want to upscale DVD's to 720p or 1080i then VGA is the way to go, if not then component will do the trick.

I bought a VGA cable in preparation for the phone people sending me my 360 and it says supports all the res for gaming, and only 480 for DVDs... this is an official VGA cable as well. I thought that sounded a bit odd, but.. that's what it says.

14-11-2006, 14:26
The best thing about Gears, imho, is that it has delivered. A year ago when PGR3, Kameo, Perfect Dark etc came out people were like "meh where's the next gen?" There were screenies of Gears floating around, and videos that people just didn't believe. Lots of people doubted that we'd see that level of gfx from the 360 and yet on Friday we will. I've watched the latest trailer a few times and its just insane how detailed everything looks. I bought a new vga cable just so I can get it in HD on my 19'' monitor. The trailer looks fantastic. The only problem I have is that my 5.1 system is downstairs on the 28'' *NON* hdtv and my monitor is upstairs. So do I take HD over 5.1? I'm tempted to go with the 28'' tv and 5.1 over HD as the sound will make the game more atmospheric and immersive.

Yeah its not next-geny and it is basically Spiderman 2 with Superman but thats always a good thing as Spiderman 2 rocked :D One thing you shouldn't do is throw a fire engine at a fire. It doesn't seem to put it out :D

Aye, it's great. It needs a lot more passing than in previous years, and the lack of editing is a pain in the arse, but for gameplay it's still the best by a country mile.

Only played it once, but it was perfectly smooth. If you've never played it then it will take a bit of getting used to over Fifa, as the gameplay is vastly different, but also vastly superior if you give it some time. I have real trouble playing Fifa now as I just find it too clunky.

Aye, it's pretty decent. There's an update due for it today which should resolve some of the problems it had, which will make it more enjoyable when you get around to playing it. :)

Daz
30-11-2006, 16:39
Saints Row has been the more fun game for me out of the two, purely because of DR's save system. That's not to say it isnt most amusing of course, it can just sometimes be difficult to maintain progress :)

Either that or I need to spend some more time looking for bogs.

I love both games, and I've spent quite a bit of time on both of them. Dead Rising's save system is weird, though when you get used to it, it stops becoming an annoyance and starts adding to the atmosphere (you're in a zombie infested mall after all, it's not meant to be easy :)).

I personally would recommend getting both :D

To save in Dead Rising you generally need to get to the bathroom and save in there. There are other save points (the safe area you first start in, whenever you finish a case), but in general the toilets are where you need to save. :)

If I were forced to choose between the 2 it would be a very tough decision. I think I enjoyed Dead Rising's story and general gameplay more, but I think Saints Row has more variety and longevity to it. Both truly are excellent though, so if there's any realistic way to afford them both, get them. There is also the option of loaning 1 of them from me, it's not like you're that far away from me :)

I struggled with it for a while as well, but as soon as you do put a bit of time into it, it becomes a routine and you stop thinking about it so much. As well, when your character levels up more you need to save less and you become so much harder :D

I'm thinking of adding a racing game, which is better, Burnout or PGR3? I've played Burnout on the cube too.

Burnout Revenge is better :) More options for playing it over Live, plus it's just more fun. :D
I'd own it for the 360 if it wasn't for the fact I've already got it for the X-Box.

CoD2 I really like but i did love the original, just a good, fun FPS game with a good story.

So the consensus is Burnout instead of PGR3?

Well if it helps, I reckon Davey's going to agree with me :p

Hehe well if people think it's good I'll get it. I'm probably going to try and get it in the Jan sales as I'll have 5 games to keep me going by my birthday so will need to play through those. Really looking forward to finally getting it and getting online. Just to warn everyone you're probably all going to be pestered come Christmas :D

I'd say Burnout is probably more fun than PGR3 online. When I've played PGR3 online most people just need to smash each other off the road, so I can see why Burnout would be more fun as its designed for that specific reason.

Thanks I'll see where I can find Burnout then :)

Oh Pete, you are the only one left of my friends who is still pending :p

You know me too well :D I would agree that Burnout is better than PGR3 in that it's more fun, but I certainly wouldn't dismiss PGR3, it's one of the few driving games I've played to completion (on one difficulty setting anyway, not good enough to do better).

As for other games I'd recommend, they are....

Smackdown vs Raw 2007 (you don't need to be a wrestling fan to like it, but it helps)
Oblivion (may take a while to get into, but I've put 300 hours into it so far so it must be good ;))
Hitman: Blood Money (make sure you play it stealthily, it's much better that way)
Top Spin 2 (best tennis game I've ever played)
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (like the X-Men Legends games if you've ever played them, only better)
Test Drive: Unlimited (play it online or offline, either way it's great when you get used to the handling)
Fight Night Round 3 (easy 1000 points if you want to be a score whore, plus it's the best boxing game ever)
Geometry Wars: Evolved (best XBL Arcade game)
I could recommend more, but I'm sure that'll be enough for you. I've got all of them (bar Top Spin 2 as I traded it in as I'd done all I needed to do) so I'm sure I'll loan you a few after Christmas :)

I'm still waiting for Play-Asia to ship that :( They've taken my money and said they'd ship it as soon as they get stock....that was mid November. :(

It really is a game you need to put some effort into before you see real rewards. I just killed a maniacal clown juggling chainsaws while wearing a dress (not often you can say that :D), gained a level and the games got distinctly harder. I'm currently trying to get two Japanese tourists out of Wonderland Plaza with little success. They keep getting surrounded and I run out of weapons to get them out, the Zombie count is huge :/

Might try that mission in North plaza instead.

I was like that as well, ended up restarting it several times, but after a while it does start to become habit, when you enter a new area you find out where the toilets are then go and save it.

The mental image alone makes me want to play it ;D
Maybe over Christmas I'll be able to devote some time to it, more in the mood for short burst games at the moment like Tomb Raider and NFS:MW.

When you've killed Adam, you can pick up his chainsaw from the section in the middle by the ride controls. It re-spawns whenever you enter the area and you can carry more than 1 :) Also, go and get yourself the books Engineering and Entertainment from Bachman's Bookporium (by the stairs to the upper level of Paradise Plaza), and Criminal Biography from Sir Book-A-Lot (on the upper level of Wonderland Plaza, across from the bathroom). If you get those 3 books, your small chainsaw will last 27 times as long as usual. Get them, 2 chainsaws, and a few health potions and you can tear through hundreds of zombies without batting an eyelid :)

Not sure if people will have seen this but it appears Alan Wake has been delayed till 2008, well according to the US 360 mag. A post on the AW forums says there has been no mention of a release date and they are happy with the progress.

Also, if you give them both those ridiculous plastic lipsticks from the perfume counter they're actually pretty lethal with them!

Got them done now, was really easy with uber chainsaw :) Slipped back into a bad habit and forgot to save before walking into a shootout with brad and that guy with a sniper rifle, so had to go back and help that guy who couldnt walk out of North Plaza again though, oops.

Only tried twice with this guy (I died once, Brad died the next time) but I think I'm in a big of a predicament. I dont have time to go and kill whoever's guarding the gun shop, so I'm left with no projectile weapons, just a sledgehammer and chainsaw. Whenever I'm lucky enough to get close to him with some health left (one shot from that rifle takes 2 bars), he either barges me or smacks me with the gun.

I get the impression I need a gun of some sort :/

Belmit
05-12-2006, 12:27
It's really difficult with a gun due to not having time to aim. The only way I was able to do it was later on when I had a lot more health from levelling up, and just running in with the chainsaws.

Daz
05-12-2006, 12:31
I'll have another stab later. Might try a bit of a wild card option and grabbing a hockey stick or golf club from the sports shop, see what I can do with that.

Really starting to get the bug for it now though, I've been offered tomorrow off and I might take it just so I can spend the afternoon playing this :embarassed:

I'm well into NFS:MW now, want to get it completed before the Swansea meet. :)

Davey_Pitch
05-12-2006, 13:10
I've beaten Carlito with both guns and the chainsaw, and I don't think one method is easier than the other. You can aim quickly while he's trying to shoot Brad so that makes it easier. If you want to chainsaw him, use the pillars as cover and move close towards him while his attention is on Brad. You'll get hit a couple of times but you only need to hit him 3 times with the chainsaw and he's done.

Daz
05-12-2006, 13:14
Probably not even that, Brad does a decent amount of damage himself. It's probably easier than I think, but you know what it's like, couple of quick attempts then you cant help but think about it after you've put the pad down :/

Hopefully I'll have plenty of time after this to go and have fun with another psycho or two. I pushed it right to the limit going to get wotsisface with the bad lag and get back in time for this.

Starting to see how the whole 3/5/7 day system wont get annoying. Sure, you have to go over the same stuff again, but being at a higher level means you can do them in different ways and have more fun with it. Well, I hope anyway.

Belmit
05-12-2006, 13:24
I got the wrong end of the stick - thought you were talking about the guy in the gun shop. :/

The way I did it was with the uzi. Hide in a shop the other side of where Brad is shooting from, and when Carlito turns his back hammer him with bullets. I did it again later on with a chainsaw and a skateboard!

Daz
05-12-2006, 13:26
Skateboard is a top suggestion! I've got more chance of finding one of them than I have any decent weaponry.

Starting to see how much depth there is to it. And the satisfaction of being able to smash a cash register into a zombie's face :D

Davey_Pitch

Try getting a frying pan, adding cooking oil to it, then putting it on a stove to heat it up. Then introduce pan to the face of any passing zombie ;D

Haly

Didn't realise you'd be able to do something like that :D
Have to say I'm impressed by the physics engine that I've seen so far, as well as the ingenuity of the game designers just from what I've heard.

Hopefully have Sunday free to play it to my heart's content. Only really loaded it up today because NFS:MW was pissing me off :embarassed:
Poor deprived zombies.

I'll probably go back to DR when I've done a bit more on Lego Star Wars II. I've finished all the episodes but need to re-do most of them to get all the minikits, true jedi & free story true jedi. Fantastic game.

Does give me the motivation to complete games though, which I've always been crap at getting round to doing. So I suppose in a way it means I'm reaching the full potential of the game which is always good. :)

Although worryingly I'm now sitting here thinking how interesting it would be to do some research on how the achievement system has changed gaming, aaaaargh.

Aye, I did that with Top Spin 2 (so far my only 360 game traded in), I spent a couple of house beating everyone in exhibition mode to get the extra points :)
