View Full Version : A strange request.. Hob spacers?

Right, in my new kitchen we have a gas hob, bloody brilliant!
it gets hotter instantly, and when I want to turn something down a little, it responds instantly and I don't have to wait 5 minutes to see whether I've turned it down enough (or too much).
However, even on the smallest ring on the lowest setting, it still boils/simmers stews and curries etc. too quickly!
I've been hunting around the net tonight for something to fix this issue and one thing I've been hoping to find but haven't found yet is some type of spacer to raise the pan maybe another cm above the ring.
Do these things exist? or am I going to have to get a new pan or something equally as annoying?
Thankyouplease :)

Not a cluuuuuuuuuuue! What hob do you have yourself there?
It's a massive change if it's new to you from electric to gas... when I moved from gas to electric I found the cooking just took an AGggggggggGGE and hated it! So glad we have gas back!
Maybe... you're just not used to how quick it heats things up? I know I was shocked at the transition. Sounds odd though for the small ring to be bubbling up curries et al quickly! Very odd indeed.

Not sure matey what to suggest :/
lol.
Helpful post here ;D
Let us know how you get on though! I'm intrigued!
If my hob is too hot, I just bung the pan in the oven on the lowest setting instead.
Gas is brilliant. surprised you find it to hot on minimum. Aren't the flames tiny tiny like 2mm long?
As for your question no idea.

I've had gas before, infact last year was the first time I'd ever had electric and I hated it because it was never hot enough and always took too long to respond to changes.
I absolutely love gas, that "bloody brilliant" in my post wasn't sarcasm :D
The flames are teeny tiny, just little heads popping out of the ring.
I still find that it's hotter than simmering level.
If I'm simmering a stew (like I did yesterday) I don't want to have to check & stir it every 5 minutes to stop it burning to the bottom of the pan.

I love gas, used gas and electric extensively and gas is the only real choice because when you turn the head off it's gone, not the case on electric.
As for your quandry, I haven't gotten a clue sadly.
For stews and stuff get a terracotta pot about £20 and throw it in the oven..
Or a cast iron casserole pot with a lid. They're about £7 in Ikea. Like the Le Creuset ones, only about a million pounds cheaper. I prefer the oven to the hob when I'm doing things that take an hour+ to cook anyway. Like you say, you don't want to be going back to stir it every 20 mins. If you leave it in the oven, it'll take care of itself.
My smallest gas ring on the lowest setting is too hot for slow cooking things for hours in my pans.

Went into comet today to look at the fridge I'm going to buy online and had a look at the slow cookers there too after seeing pigmo's one. so tempted.
Side story, a clerk in Comet came up to me and asked if I wanted any help with the fridge freezer and I said "I want this model, but it's £100 more expensive than I can get it online" and he just said okay and walked off.
