Bought some porridge oats today and there was a recipe on the back for some flapjacks :)

Got all of the ingredients apart from some syrup so I swapped that for some honey instead. No idea if it will work out OK but it looks good cooked in the tray. Just waiting for it to cool now :D

Well, they taste alright :D

I think syrup would be better than the honey so I'll try that next time.

I would guess they'll be a bit crumbly with honey? Syrup also has a stronger taste. I bet they still taste nomalicious though.Crumble them into some ice cream and gobble.

I wouldn't say they were crumbly, but they lacked the taste to me. Like you say, if syrup has a stronger taste then they would have been much better....they just seemed a little bland. But still nice enough :)

I like the sound of crumbling some over ice cream. I think we might have some in the freezer so might give it a go :D

I make lots of flapjacks, but of course to make them well you need oodles of butter, brown sugar and syrup, however I replace the latter with honey as well. I also pour in quite a bit of whey protein to make 'em even better for me! ;)

I love flapjacks muchly.

I remember making these loads when I was at school and they were always greatly received - can't for the life of me remember how I did them though :/

Off the top of my head...125g butter, 125g demerara sugar, 5 tbsp syrup, 225g oats, 1 tsp ground ginger.

Preheat ovet to 190C. Melt butter in pan and stir in sugar and syrup. Add the oats and ginger and stir in well. Grease a 20cm sandwich tin and press the mixture in firmly. Bake for 20 mins. Allow to cool for 15 mins in the tin and then score. Allow to cool completely and then turn it out and break in to wedges.

My mum has got a spare tin of syrup at home so I'm going to pick it up on my way through tonight :D

Also decided I'm going to melt some chocolate down and pour it over the top :)

Well this is where it gets controversial : I love chocolate. I (will hopefully) love (my own) flapjacks.

Desmo

I now know you like chocolate. I assume you like cookies? Yet you have cookies with chocolate in them in your sig. Surely that's also wrong? :p

There is nothing wrong with having a layer of chocolate on top of your flapjacks :D

Jingo

Oh cookies are a whole different matter and you know it...

Brownies, flapjack, cake et al are delicious snacks of a sweetened nature...

Cookies however are a way of life! Make way feeble christianity and bow down to your Sweet Sweet Cookie Overlords!

*is very scared about recieving brown lumpy mixture in the post*

In the meantime: BEHOLD!...

http://i39.tinypic.com/103v5vl.png

Ingredients:

- 70 grams of salted butter.
- 30 grams of marg/utterly butterly.
- 80 grams of dark brown sugar.
- 250 grams of scots porridge oats.
- 2 generous tablespoons of golden syrup.

Method:

- Preheat oven to 200 (180 for fan assisted) Gas Mark whatever (I have a Neff Dual so Nyerr :p )

- Melt the butter and marg in a deep saucepan on a very low heat.

- Add the sugar and syrup and stir until dissolved into an unappetising brown coloured sploosh.

- Stir in the oats bit by bit until covered with the ever goldening sploosh.

- Spread the mixture into a greased baking tray (I tend to drop a splash of vegetable oil in the middle and wipe around with kitchen roll).

- Place on a middle shelf for 15 minutes but keep an eye on it - remove immediately when the edges begin to catch turning golden brown.

- Stand for 2/3 minutes before scoring the mixture into desired chunks.

- Cover the tray with a couple of sheets of kitchen roll and leave until cool.

- Chop, Nom & Marvel at your accomplishments.

:D

OMG. I LOVE flapjacks. I can never cook them though.

Even with my good old scotts oats porridge recipe... I will follow it step by step and some how... they come out either too gooey or rock hard. I can never get a soft chewy flapjack.

My last batch had to be smashed up and then picky used it in cereal with milk to nom. He liked it!!

Hmmm maybe I will give this a try!!

Thought I'd bump this up since I've been boosting my diet with flapjacks loaded with mixed nuts for the last few weeks :)

Although, I thought I'd mention I tried a different type of oats - Sainsburys TTD oats. Don't use them! Normal porridge oats are rolled and smashed up a bit which makes the porridge turn into, er, porridge. These ones are more whole and make a kind of swollen oats in milk soup that won't turn into porridge no matter how long you cook it for. Unfortunately it means flapjacks don't turn into flapjacks either. You end up with swollen oats in caramel soup and it just falls to bits. I managed to rescue some of it and cook it a bit longer so the caramel firmed up. What I've got is somewhere between a muesli bar and a liquid Mr Tom (seriously nuts) with oats.

I got bored of buying ready made cereal bars, found they too sweat

Got some oats, bran flakes, honey, brown sugar, bit of butter, raisins, cashew and walnuts, mix everything together and bake, then leave to cool then break up and eat.

I dont really measure them out, made them 3 times now and got it right with guestimation

Made some beasty energy flapjacks this evening, using up all the dregs of cereals in the cupboard. So we've got the basic flapjack mix with a bit of extra butter and sugar, plus about another 75g of mixed cereal, plus around 100g of chopped mixed dried fruit like dates, cherries, prunes and figs. Then there's a handful of dessicated coconut, sunflower seeds, chopped almonds and a couple of pecans. I think that covers it :p

Cupboard is looking nice and tidy and my tummy is going to be mighty happy at breakfast time tomorrow ;D
