View Full Version : Pancake Day aka Shrove Tuesday
So who is going to make a some pancake mix and pig out on pancakes.
My favourite filling is some sugar or jam.
Its also the start of Lent, anybody giving up anything.
I am giving up Alcohol its perfect timing as I will be able to start drinking on my birthday. :D
Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.[1] The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where according to the Bible he endured temptation by Satan.[2] Different churches calculate the forty days differently.
No idea how to make them, but I bet it's stupidly easy right?
I love pancake days. OM NOM NOM
I don't like them :/ Mic does but I don't know how to make them or what he likes on them.

milk, flour and eggs.
done!
We'll be having some tomorrow :D
Best one I had was a stall in Chelmsford. Cooked it fresh and put Maltesers in it
I think I'll just be having a touch of lemon and sugar tomorrow, although we do have some syrup and honey in the cupboard too.
You need some salt too, and add a some nutmeg or cinnamon. Once I've got the batter ready I melt some butter to pour in to add a bit of richness.
Alcohol is too easy to give up for me as I seldom drink. I don't know what I'd give up... chocolate maybe - that would make life hard!
PANCAKE BACON AND MAPLE SYRUP!!
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooh my LORDY LORD!
I LOVE it!
The bacon must be cremated though (as always) and and and ommm nom nom nom nom nom nom nom!
Thing is, I went to buy Maple Syrup the other day and it was £5.30 for a small bottle :( The way things are monies wise at the moment I couldn't justify it :(
Sooo. Lemon pancakes for me tomorrow.
Less om nom nommy but still om nom.
I shall be making ham and cheese omlettes. Naughty but nice! :D

Seriously!!? Frig, must be cheaper somewhere, otherwise i'll go without it too!
Isnt imported? so they can charge silly prices, my parents bought a bottle back from Toronto and its vile stuff imho.
Yeh it is. Sainsburys price that was. We were doing a big shop as it was and yeh... an extra fiver I just couldn't do it!
We used to grab a load from California when we went over there to visit a relative - or she'd bring some over here but we haven't seen her for a couple of years!!
I may have a wonder down to lidl at some point. Maybe they'll have some for cheaper...
The problem with maple syrup is that the cheap stuff is synthetic crap that tastes awful so it's a false economy buying it. That said, the expensive stuff is effing expensive but I adore it so I'll occasionally treat myself.
I'll most likely have pancakes tomorrow, I normally do on Shrove Tuesday.
Pancakes, sugar and jif lemon. Sorted. It's about the only time I ever put sugar on anything.

I always knew you were a very, very sensible man.
With english style pancakes or froggy crépes I'll only ever have lemon and sugar but with the ticker american variety I love to nom them with crispy bacon and maple syrup.

I'm going to sound like a right misery guts but I dont think i'll bother doing any tomorrow. When you live on your own theres not really any point cos things like that are better shared with someone.
That said, pancakes are yummy!
Share? Food? Are you kidding?!

Share? Food? Are you kidding?!
Well yes I realise in YOUR case that would be a complete impossibility :p
It was more the whole fun and games of actually making them, sticking said pancakes to the ceiling following
"how high can you flip them?" competitions etc.
Then the who makes the best one competition, followed by my personal favourites
"how many can you fit in your mouth at a time?" and
"can you eat one covered in chocolate sauce without and cutlery and without licking your lips or fingers?"
Or is that just me?

Yes. You need to be seen to. Thoroughly.

Awesome totally forgot. I'll be making some. Will have to just have sugar and lemon as on a tight budget for the next week and a bit.

Pancakes, sugar and jif lemon.
Couldn't agree more, it's the best way to eat them, though I am partial to putting a bit of nutella on them instead.

Oh crap. Aunt Bessies frozen pancakes it is for us, lol.
By the time we get home from ballet there is no way I'm frying pancakes!!
but, but, but, but, but it takes about 5 minutes! Make the batter in the morning, job done.
Nah, I'll go to my Mum's at some point over the next week or so, and we'll have proper ones then. It's just not the same when I make my own :(
I had a cold Tesco pancake with Nutella and peanut butter for breakfast this morning.

Make the batter now put it in the fridge overnight, it's technically the best thing to do anyway (although i don't know why). Making pancakes from scratch is just as much trouble as "pre made" ones! One frying pan, three ingredients and a bowl is all thats needed (plus toppings)!
I'm making a HUGE bowl now so we can use it tomorrow, annnnnd i'll probably test it as well i guess :p
I get home from college at 10pm and will still be cooking pancakes. They take about 30 seconds to mix from scratch and even less to cook. Jeeeeez :p
Just sugar & lemon for me. Oldest and best :)

I dunno its good, buuuuut syrup is also godlike
Prefer lemon & syrup. It's the sweeeeeet and soooooour. The only sweet and sour I really love. It's got to be dripping in lemon though. Om nom nom nom.

I'll be cheating this year. Asda were doing mixes were you just add milk and makes about 10 pancakes a bottle. 2 bottles for a quid and I just couldn't say no. :) They might be terrible but I couldn't actually afford buying ingredients I'm so skint at the mo! :(
I think hes on about the actual sides of it, when they go a bit crinkly. Not that ive seen many womens foofs :o

Well, that's just one of the ones... i quite like them filled with spinach, honey, chestnuts, mincemeat and grated cheese, chicken and mushrooms. Not all mixed together though. :p
I reckon I'll have mixture of savoury and sweet.

Is that part of the deal breaker so that I earn some pancakes at the end of it?
You know what's ultimately funny? I hadn't read this forum until 2:20PM today, and yet we had pancakes for breakfast today. lol
My son (14 years old) ate 24 of them. I somehow managed to stuff 10 of them down my gullet and Tina had 7 or 8. Then Patrick came back looking for more!!! Good thing Tina knows from prior experience to make gazoodles to cover his ravenous appetite for her most excellent pancakes!! :D
leowyatt
23-02-2009, 22:28
24  that lad would put most of us to shame ;D I've managed around 10 before but not in a while.
Oh, Patrick very much takes after me in that regard. I've just gotten old enough I can't stuff myself like that anymore.
[EDIT] Taking thread way too far off topic
Yes, my boy is with Tina's pancakes like Cookie Monster is with Oreo's. ;)

24? How thick were they? I'm up for the challenge  :D I've eaten a 20oz steak with sides in one sitting I'm sure I can manage 24 pancakes  Ok so I'm going to have to double the gym efforts.... but still :D

We're giving the pancakes a miss tomorrow, my Mum is going to come over for tea on Thursday and I'll make them from scratch, eek!

I know i've not got kids so my opinion isn't valid etc... But surely making pancakes with kids is actually probably one of the easiest things ever? Easier than cooking a dinner i'd say. Yeah might get a bit messy with batter but nothing a cloth won't wipe a work surface down with? I can't understand what is worrying about mixing three ingredients together and putting on a hot pan, flipping adding whatever and eating.
I used to love pancake day as a little kid with my mum and i'd love to cook pancakes for kids now i think it'd be fun :D

Its nowt to do with mess etc and I agree its much easier than cooking a dinner buuuuuuuuuut I am rubbish at making pancakes and have to concentrate on making sure they don flop over while trying to turn them over :( lol
My son is like his Daddy and expects something straight away and bloody nags soooooooo much (another thing he learned off his Dad) lol
Not much point in making batter mix for 2 pancakes when I have a couple of ready made pancakes in the fridge.
come to mine then, I'll make the batter you make the pancakes :p lol
LeperousDust

Pancakes ARE instant! Take a minute which each side, they can watch them cook! And i never thought about a small batch of batter, having just made batter enough for god knows how many (15 eggs went in either way :D woop). But you could just make it straight in a mug, one egg little milk flour and whisk with a fork.
My point is no-one should ever have instant/ready made pancakes in their fridge! Because "regular" pancakes are instant!
If i lived closer which im only guessing since i don't know, i would come over and make batter and pancakes and i reckon be gone within 30 mins easy, i'd also task the kids into doing most of it because i'm bossy they'd love it and its just fun :)
LOL ok ok ok :p If it all goes wrong I am gonna hold you responsible :p lol
That goes for Josh crying cos mummy's pancake looks like an omlette (as in folded over) not flat and round lol
