View Full Version : Electric Shaver - Recommendations?

I'm getting bloody bored of wet shaving. I just can't be bothered any more and I was wondering if it was worth going down the route of an electric shaver?
Is it any quicker and simpler than a wet shave?

If so, any of you guys (or hairy girls) got any recommendations? Looking at sub £100 if possible but I want something that will last. Getting a cheap toy one that breaks in 6 months isn't what I want :)

Well from my experience of electric shavers you have 2 choices with regards to foils. Round and straight ones.

The first shaver I got was round one which shredded my throat so I changed to a straight rectangular one. Since then Kitten got me a philishave thingy with cream which is much better. To be honest though nothing gives me as close a shave as a wet shave.

EDIT: Will look up some shavers for you :)

Seems they are called rotary shavers and foil shavers

Rotary (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4429450/c_1/1%7Ccat_12109008%7CMen%27s+shavers%7C12109121/c_2/2%7Ccat_12109121%7CRotary+shavers%7C12109122/Trail/searchtext%3ESHAVER.htm)

Foil (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4431369/c_1/1%7Ccat_12109008%7CMen%27s+shavers%7C12109121/c_2/2%7Ccat_12109121%7CFoil+shavers%7C12109124/Trail/searchtext%3ESHAVER.htm)

TBH, closeness doesn't really bother me. 10 minutes after a shave and I'm stubbly again anyway ::/:

Do you find it easier and faster than wet? I think that's my only problem with a wet shave is that it's a bit more time consuming. I want to just buzz something over my face for 30 seconds a few times a week. Or am I overestimating how good an electric shaver is?

Was looking at the Argos one you linked to earlier on Amazon. Just reserved it at Argos now in case I want to pick it up tomorrow.

In my experience fella you are giving leccy shavers too much credit ;D unless it's because I have a weird face I found wet shaves to be smoother and actually quicker assuming you use the right stuff.

I found with the foil shaver I had it needed alot more concentration to get it right and even then when I rubbed my hands over my face they didn't feel smooth. The rotary shaver was better but I just had trouble with my neck and getting rid of all the hair otherwise I'd miss patches.

Des if you don't want a close shave and just want to scrub up, just go buy a £30 remington one. Does the job perfect mine tugs a little now (but its 4 years old and on its second charger!) Mine isn't meant to get wet and i've taken it in the shower. It's indestructable and does a perfect job, its only a trimmer, but tbh its fiiiiine :)

It's no good for "close shave" but for trimming and keeping under control its perfect, and i've just saved you £70 to spend on something fun :p

Takes me a few mins dry or wet to scrub up and look "presentable" with my shaver and i can do it without a mirror now quite easily.

//Edit: Here (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Remington-Professional-MB320C-Diamond-Trimmer/dp/B000SZ7460/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=drugstore&qid=1235742627&sr=8-1) is the new version of mine that looks exactly the same...

I use one of these as I hate being clean shaven. Shortest setting gives a nice 5 o'clock shaddow (http://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?categoryParentId=4674&storeId=10052&productId=49001&callingViewName=&categoryId=4676&langId=-1&catalogId=11051)

What are you using for your wet shaving Desmo?

I use the wilkinson quattro and Clinque clean shave. Though at the minute I'm using something we picked up from Cheshire Oaks but will check the name tonight. I found that with gels and foams I had to re-do it most of the time as I didn't get a clean shave. Now using either of those results in a great shave in no time at all. I think from start to finish it takes me around 2 minutes.

Yeah pretty much on the same theme as me :) As i said just get the cheapest something around £30 will do the job just as well as £100 if you only want a trim!

You'll laugh at this, but I get shampoo from my hair and rub it on my chin ;D
Always done this whilst in the shower and never had any problems. Currently use a Gillette "whatever the latest best man can get thing is".

Alex, I want a close enough shave rather than just a tidy up. But I'm not looking for the perfect shave that a wet shave gives, if that makes sense.

Delboy...Babyliss? That's for girls isn't it? ;D

well if you aren't looking for a smooth shave then I'd say give a foil shaver a go. I had a remington one which cost i think it was 40 quid and worked ok. Got replacement foils online too when the original ones broke.

It's not that I don't want a close shave, it's more a case of I don't care that much if I don't get one :)

I'm just worried I'll spend £80 on something that's no better than what I already do. Only thing is it's more convenient and I can shave more easily I think.

I use that one also, bloody handy really because if I'm not careful a wet shave will bring my neck out in a rash and a leccy shaver never gets rid of all the hairs properly.

I'd suggest trying a different shave cream like the clinique stuff I mentioned. Only costs over a fiver and made the world of difference for me.

Desmo, without the guard on mine it gets bloody close, but its not a close shave so to speak, its a trimmer that trims to 0 essentially. Does the job perfect for me, it just sounded like thats what your after. Something cheap for the off days, and if you can really be arsed take your razor out (thats what i do). It means the silly expensive blades last 10 times longer :)

I got one for Christmas for the same reasons as you Jamie, and to be honest the time taken to get a "decent" shave is comparable to time taken for a careful wet shave. However, it does make it MUCH more convenient, especially if you realise you need a shave when already dressed / midday etc.
I got a braun foil shaver (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Braun-4737-TriControl-S-Foil-Shaver/dp/B000A0PWEO). Its a cheaper basic model, but for my first shaver I'm pretty happy, and slowly working on my technique to get a quick decent shave - though I do stuggle on the neck for some reason.

I don't get on with electric shavers - maybe my face is an odd shape or my beard is particularly stubborn but it takes too long, is too loud and often tugs the hair out instead of cutting it which can lead to stubble rash.
Buy some proper shave gel and a decent multi use razor.
The laydeez prefer a man who wet shaves too.

I don't really get on with electric razors so I use a Remington beard trimmer if I want to "shave"

i use one of these (http://www.boots.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10052&productId=121794&callingViewName=&langId=-1&catalogId=11051). They work great, apart from the neck area on me. Never seem to get a good shave there, always takes a fair bit of effort.
General shave is nice and fast apart from that, however, whether I bother to put on pre-electric or not (better with)

^^This.

Leccy shavers pull the bejaysus out of my chin and when I leccy shave it takes me 4 times as long and I always miss bits.

Mind you, I've grown a goatee now and have bought a beard trimmer with 10 billion attachments to keep the topiary neat. I still wet shave my neck and cheeks.

 Err, snap. We're like chin twins or something ;D

Unfortunately the trimmer I got has a lowest setting of 3mm which means it starts to look scraggy again after about 4 days.

Curse my elevated testosterone levels.

Was that aimed at me? :D

Yep, already got one now :p I decided that even if I don't like it as much, it will at least make a change from a wet shave and give me something different to use if I really can't be bothered. But I do want to use it as my main shave so I'll just suck it and see :)

Just a little update, but I'm actually quite liking this :D

Yes, it's going to take a bit of practice to get right each time, and yes, at the moment my neck is still a little sensitive to it but that will fade in time. I'm just finding it so much easier and I can use it whenever I feel like it. Currently having a quick shave in the evenings so my neck soreness dies down by morning. Once it's all OK, I'll just go back to shaving in the morning again. It's not a brilliantly close shave like a wet razor, but it's more than good enough for me :)
