Not sure if anyone has seen it or used it but it comes highly recommend off a good friend. From what I can see it can be a free or paid service boasting over a 1000 new songs being added each week. It looks like a legal file streaming service where you can make endless playlists.

Dr. Z posted as thread on it a while ago, and petemc gave a link for the free download without needing an invite. Will have a look for it...

We've been using it at work for a few weeks and it's absolutely brilliant. There are a few big names missing (notably Pink Floyd and the Beatles) but mostly only ones that are missing from all the internet music sources. It's fast, comprehensive and really easy-to-use and I'm starting to sound a bit like an advert.
The free version has one ad every half hour, which imo doesn't make it worth paying the $9.99 to go pro.

And free link:

It really is quite an awesome little program.

Edit: Oh, they've changed it then! Looks like invites aren't required.

This is something I keep hearing about and then forgetting to grab so the reminder is very welcome. I've got it now :)

I just wanted some random 80s cheese/pop, so I tried their radio service. Bad idea - it's decidedly crap at picking out songs that match the selections.

So, is there any easy way to just load up a shedload of random stuff based on genre (not too worried about decade though that would be nice) and let it get on with it. I have a few thousand MP3 files I can use to point it in the right direction if need be. :)

PS - I'm aware that MediaMonkey can do what I want based on the music I've ripped already (before LD barges in) but I'd like some stuff I don't have mixed in. :)

you can type
genre: cheesepop
in the the search as opposed to using the radio iirc

Mark
05-03-2009, 01:33
It's not that clever, but genre:pop works (22817 tracks - that'll keep me going for a while ;D)

Ta. :)

divine
05-03-2009, 01:39
I wasn't expecting cheesepop to work, was just an example :p

There are more searchable genres than are selectable in the radio though I think.

Mark

There certainly are. genre:trance works (for when I'm working). \o/

When I wanted an 80s day recently I literally just typed '80s' into the search, and it delivered all the albums with it in the name e.g. 'Fantastic 80s'. Not perfect but worth a go.

Hmm, hadn't heard about that. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/03/04/spotify_breach/ gives the details). Think my account was registered this year tho. Still, worrying.

And http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7925455.stm

My account was registered yesterday. Certainly a novel approach to hacking, though it sounds like they were sending hashes to the client and comparing them there, which is the wrong approach IMO.

I subscribed in January back when DRZ first posted about it, but even then, what details can they possibly have got? My address? My DOB? Access to my Spotify account? I know it's all about data protection, but frankly I'm fairly unconcerned. If someone wanted that info they could find it in seconds from other internet sources or, you know, ask me. :p

if you like spotify but want to buy legal music as well check out sky songs, had a few issues with it, but they seem to of sorted most of it out.

http://songs.sky.com/#subscription
£7.99 for 15 songs and unlimited streaming a month or
£6.49 for 10 songs and unlimited streaming a month.

you can get a month free (10 song one) assuming the codes still work.
skysongs1103
skysongs1606
skysongs2708
SKYMAG

Even a button on sign up for one month only so not even a chance to forget to cancel.

No : he's saying you can buy a number of legal downloads as well as the (already legal) streaming for a subscription - how i'm reading it anyway :)

I think the legality of Spotify is a 'grey' area to people like me, because the copyright laws are difficult to decipher (and seem incredibly complicated on a site such as this), but it seems accepted that spotify is a legal way of listening to music. Has some major labels backing it.

Nope, perfectly legal.

Well the jammy bar stewards.... very clever... very clever indeed!

Get you hooked on it, setting up some mega playlists and discovering new music etc etc... and then once you're addicted WOOSH... you have to pay.

Man! I have 3 hours left until I have to decide whether or not to cough up for it moolah wise! Most probably will seeing as most of my work is at home and thus good music is required to keep the day ticking!

JAMMY DODGERS!

Boo!

Belmit
03-05-2011, 15:50
You don't *have* to pay, you're just limited to 10hrs and max 5 replays per month. Admittedly that's quite a paltry amount if you use it all the time, but it's about right for me as I only put it on very occasionally - usually when I'm tidying up or something. I am tempted to go for the fiver a month option though to get rid of ads and to use it more at work.

Desmo

Will be coughing up. It's an addiction now. FUDGE to them FUDGE FUDGE FUDGE!
