View Full Version : What do you call your parents?

Mum? Dad?

I call my parents by their first names, is that disrespectful?

Been talking about it at work earlier, Ive called my mum Susan, and my dad Miguel (an affectionate twist on Michael) since I was about 16. And they actually prefer it!

On the very rare occasions Ill call my mum "Mum", she will say "What did you just call me?" :D

Same goes with my dad, if I call him anything other than Miguel, he doesnt realise I am talking to him :D

Am I alone here?

Always called them Mum and Dad.
I've got a friend who calls her parents by their names but it just sounds wrong to me so I don't think I ever would. They seem happy enough with it though.

Ive had that said to me Jen, a mate of mine wouldnt dare call her mum by her first name, so was shocked to find out the woman I was talking to on the phone, and reffered to her as Susan, was actually my mother :D

It varies, dad used to be called either dad or Lenny, and mum is mum or Jeanie.

Always been mum and dad. Would seem really odd using their names.

Ma or Pa :D

When I was supremely ickle I liked to try and say words whilst blowing bubbles with my mouth. Saying "Ma" or "Pa" prolonged the ability to blow a bubble ("Mum"/"Dad" would mean I would have to pop it). And it's kind of stuck since then :) When referring to other peoples Ma's and Pa's I automatically say "Ma or Pa". "Mum"/"Dad" is probably used when I'm being serious, "Muuuuuuummmmmmmmmy"/"Daaaaaaaadddddddddy" when I want something ;D

Sometimes I might jokingly say their name in full if they've done something nawty but never would use their forenames in conversation :)

They get called Gran and Gramps now, Mum and Dad before the kids were born.

Mother or father, but in an exaggerated Cornish way so it doesn't sound posh. Never really considered why I do that.
My sister calls mother by her first name tho. Don't know when that started happening. Don't think she likes it; she always says there are only two people in the world who can call her 'mum'.

It depends...

Generally it's Dad, or if he's done something bad or that I dissaprove of then it's Father...

Just plain old mum and dad for me. My big sister sometimes calls them Rhubarb and Grapefruit. I can't remember how that came about. It would be strange to use their first names, for me its more affectionate to use mum and dad.

If im discussing my parents with either of my siblings then its "the parentals" or "the parental unit."

But otherwise its just Mum and Dad, Mummy (if im in the doghouse or im after something) or Father (if he's being a stroppy git!)

My sister has a habit of calling my Mum by her first name though.

Would never call my mum and dad by their names... they would find it disrespectful!

Mum would deffo tell me off. :(

A family friend calls her dad by his name.... such as Bart does in Simpsons, but its usually mocking him (and he is the type to be mocked lol).

Otherwise its 'Grandad Dave' as my Nephew has 3 Grandads! :D

Only ever Mum and Dad. My dad has some strange names for me though, the most affectionate (in my mind rather than his) probably being 'Kid' (one of his inbuilt Northern roots kicking in no doubt). I like calling my grandad Jack though as it's what everyone knows him as, although his real name is John I think. I know a lot of people called John used to go by Jack, probably not so common nowadays though.

Mum dad.

First names would feel totally stupid and wrong, far to formal. Like a business meeting rather than a family.

I'm not allowed to call my Mum Mum. She doesn't like it. I just start talking when I want to talk to her really. :D

In cards I write Muttie as a derivative of Mutter from German what I studied at school. When I speaks to my brother I refer to her as Maman from French.

Was mummy/daddy when I was little but when I outgrew that mum & dad felt odd for some reason so quite often its mother & father in a semi-mock posh kind of way. Both my parents have been known to call me Chr-Jen-Liz-Pete before.

I almost always call my parents by their first names but oddly once I reached 18 I became marginally more likely to call them mum or dad, don't have a clue why but suddenly it was part of my vocabulary.

On the other hand my mum is quite likely to call me by the name of one of her sisters, my dad's name or whatever family pet we've got at the times name. She's only got one child to remember, how hard can it be? ;D

When I was little I'd call my Mum Mummy. Then when I wasn't comfortable with that it changed to Muv. Still that to this day.

As for my Dad, when I was teeny tiny I couldn't cope with saying Daddy, it came out Paddy.

Then that evolved to Paddywaggle.

Then that evolved to Waggy.

And then finally to Wag.

And that's what I've called my dad for at least the last 20 years...

Stan and Feek.

You disrespectful little **$%£*& :p

I usually call my parents Mam and Dad, although I will use all sorts of different names for them when I'm messing about - like mater and pater, mother and father etc.. When we were little, we were brought up to think that calling our parents by their first names was disrespectful and akin to swearing. I still sometimes feel awkward referring to my Mam as Margaret when introducing her to people

I do occasionally refer to my Dad as "Old Stan" as that tends to be how we are distinguished by mutual friends (i.e. Old Stan and Young Stan) but not very often.

My Mam still calls me Peerie Stan sometimes. I used to get called that by the family to distinguish between my Dad and me. Slightly ironic considering the name given to a certain part of my anatomy after the Maidstone beer meet - Peerie means little in the Shetland dialect.

Call them Mum and Dad.

When I want something they often become Mother dearest and Father dearest.

When I'm trying to get Dad's attention is often "oi! old man!!" :)

Never called them Mummy and Daddy though - not even when we were really little.
