Bonjour service with iTunes

What is this service and why has it modified my LSP settings? What are Apple up to and can I disable or remove this?

It shows up in HijackThis as this line:

O10 - Unknown file in Winsock LSP: c:\program files\bonjour\mdnsnsp.dll

The net suggests it's part of Dreamweaver and Photoshop CS3 updates but I don't have this, so it must be iTunes.

Bonjour is Apple's config-less network browsing service. The idea is that you connect a machine to a network and it broadcasts what it can do - a printer for example will advertise itself as being a printer.

It's not necessary so that shouldn't be a problem getting rid of it.

I don't think it's very honest of them messing with the LSP.

I hate this. Is one of the things I remove right after installing iTunes. I did however find a way of installing just iTunes and Quicktime using the iTunes installer. Can't remember what it was now. :D

I think it was unpacking the iTunes exe and then running the iTunes and Quicktime MSIs from a command prompt with some little / command after the file name.

Conversely, Bonjour is superb if you actually want to use it! Because our systems and networks team haven't locked it down, I can connect to any network port at work with my Mac, bypass the print server completely and locate and print to any printer in the vlan.

Zeroconf is pretty platform-neutral, Bonjour is Apple's implementation of it. It does a similar job to UPNP on Windows boxes although I do agree that it should be an optional extra as unless you are sharing your iTunes library via iTunes on your LAN you probably dont need it and it just adds another extra overhead and service to run. However as Apple don't even give you much option of installing Quicktime with iTunes these days its probably too much to ask :|
