I've been asked to be a godfather. It seems the catholic tradition is for me to get a silver cross necklace say around 80. What jewellers are considered to be decent?
Also would a modern twist to the cross be ok, or does it need to be a traditional one?

I'd go for traditional and NOT go for Elizabeth Duke! :D they only sell clown necklaces and sygnet rings lol ;)

Ernest Jones, F Hinds (is okish)

I agree with going for a traditional cross. Probably something simple and not too embellished.

Sorry, I don't know your jewelry stores!
Garp has a nice one from Ernest Jones though, so I second BB on that!

Personally I would pop into your local town and see whether you can find any side streets with small silver jeweller businesses on.

In Exeter we have a fair few and to me they will do something which is a little bit different and more special than your typical high street store. Normally I find it's better quality too :)

If you wanna go all out you could always go to Tiffanys! Can't go wrong there but your wallet may cry a little!

Good luck!

I second the Tiffany's motion. If you go with Sterling Silver the price tag is less painful. And check out Elsa Peretti's stuff. She's my favorite of their designers.

Acidhell, theres a little independent jewellers opposite the post office in Cotham. Just thought cos you know the area, or there will probably be a similar independent one over your way.
Inca are quite good, I think they have a few branches dotted about. New Jewellers in Cabots Circus, but ive not been in to vouch for it sorry. :)

Another for Tiffanys if you an find something in that price range, they do lovely stuff. Ortak also do some simple celtic crosses if you want something traditional but a bit different.

I find this place good for silver jewellery (they go a lot of Kit Heath stuff)

Think this shows all the crosses they do.
Crosses (http://www.ladiesjewellery.co.uk/advanced_search_result.php?search_in_keywords=1&plural=1&s=1&keywords=cros&sort=1a&page=1)

I've ordered from them, very quick delivery and will exchange/refund if ur not happy.

Cheers guys. I'll wonder into town on sat and stop of at cotham.
I like the look of this but it's a bit over budget. Would that type of thing be ok, or should I just get a plain one?

Acid, if your going to try the Cotham one then Inca, just the other side of whiteladies where clifton down is (inca is virtually opposite kiri's barber shop) might be worth popping your head in too. :)

Personally, I find that a bit garish. However, I'm not a fan of gold anyway, especially gold & silver together. Could you run it by the parents??

I think you should either go for something plain or something with silverf decoration that remains simple and isn't too ornate. I think this one (http://www.ladiesjewellery.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=6901) is simple and pretty, but it may not be enough of a traditional cross for you.

I'd go for something simple like these...

http://www.fhinds.co.uk/Jewellery/Silver_and_Fashion_Jewellery/Silver_Necklaces

Page 4

13 items from top
and 7 items from bottom

Quite cheap on there, but was looking at styles rather than prices...

Oooo some white gold ones on here too... within budget:

Ditto to everything Lostkat said there. Also something simple will remain classic and will never go out of fashion.

A bit late to the show but another vote here for the place of blue boxes. If you look at the Paloma Picasso range, they are in the price range for the crucifix you posted. :)

Hey guys, can you give me some ideas please. It's her first birthday beginning of December and so many people will be buying her toys and clothes etc.

is there anything you can get which they keep for when they are older. If it was a boy something like a proper tankard.

Charm bracelet :) And then you can keep buying charms for her as she's getting older/big occasions :)

I wish I had one when I was younger, I think they're so special :)

is there a meaning behind the charms and order or time you should get them. There is a huge amount of charms available.

Oooooh go in that shop in the Mall if you want one of them - Essentials, (downstairs opposite H and M) I got one of my best mates one from there, and they arent cheap but she loved it, and you can just buy them new charms whenever then.

You might find some charms that do have meanings, for example a car charm when she passes her driving test - ones for passing exams etc, and always just the odd one for birthdays and special occasions.

Me and my mum both have a charm bracelet made out of my great garndfather's watch chain. They are gorgeous. We have the odd '18', '21', etc charms and then things such as the car, and I have a greyhound which i bought after my dog died :/ I've also just got little random ones from various places and occasions.

Well you can have whatever meaning you want behind them :) Picky bought I think this one for his niece:

Charm Bracelet (http://www.hotdiamonds.co.uk/products/classic-silver-charm-bracelet)

It's beautiful. The website also has an array of charms you can get which have all different meanings :)

If you go for another brand, make sure it's not just silver plated as it will wear off after a while and look pants. :)

great idea, I <3 charm bracelets. Such a personal thing :) Think you'd have to get one with an adjustable size (that you clip onto the ring that you want rather than a fixed point clasp) because obviously she'll be really little now. :)

I concur with a charm bracelet idea. I bought myself one when I was about 11 and have been adding to it ever since. For example, I try and buy a charm when we go on holiday for a memento. It's not something I ever wear, but I treasure it dearly and it's very special to me because of all the memories quite literally attached to it :)

You can get a massive range of weird and wonderful sterling silver charms on Ebay too

Can you show me one, as I can't seem to find any. Liking the idea and maybe the birthstone as her first one.

Little more help please. I found a bracelet I like the look of. I take it you could clasp to any ring making it adjustable?

http://www.bluenile.co.uk/sterling-silver-charm-bracelet_8424

And going ot get this Charm
http://www.preciousmonkeyjewellery.co.uk/products/london_blue_topaz_flutter_silver_charm/index.html

But there's 4 different gems for December? why 4? is there some sort of difference or is it just choice.

vix
13-11-2009, 13:54
That's a lovely classic bracelet. I'd say that even if the clasp doesn't ift one of the links, you could do something with the silver 'O' ring to make it fit :)

Pretty charm too. Yeah birthstones are a bit hit and miss, just pick the one you like :D

Blue Topaz is December's birthstone, with the alternative being Turquoise.

Rubies are Capricorn stones, so depends if she's born after the 22nd whether or not you want to go for one of those :) Some places say Amethyst is Capricorn too but that seems to differ.

Sagittarius is Topaz
