View Full Version : Recommend me some wines
I don't know much about wine and when I goto the supermarket I just randomly pick something that sounds interesting. most are misses but a few hits.
Wolfblast yellow label is sheer heaven (any of them)
And
Gampo di Flori - Pinot Grigio is sublime with fish dishes, only got it as it was half price and wow what a good bottle it is, seeing as I'm not a fan of white wine, but could easily drink this. no mineral taste at all.
So what are your favorite "supermarket" wines.

Watching 'Come Dine With Me' last night... I hear Chateauneuf-du-Pape is good..
I'm joking I'm joking! :D
Is it really that good though?!
BB x
I drink b lossom hill! If not, it's a box of dry white for me - the one with green plant on it from Sainsburys. I get that! £10... have it as a spritzer and it's great!!
At the moment, I'm devouring some strange red wine which I never knew existed. I shall find out the name and let you know, as it's tasty, not made me fall asleep and yeh! It's got to be good!
Just like Johnny!
Hahahaha

CNDP is a nice drop.
I'm a bit partial too.
Asda 3 for £10 has a fairly good selection.
Snappygum white, red or rose are great.
Evoloution Shiraz is beautiful.
Blossom Hill white zinfandel is nice too.
When it's offers on I tend to just look at the label find 3 I like and try them. They'll get drank in this house anyway! :)
Cheers guys. Will go an see what I can find..

Bit of Mouton always goes down well. Love their slogan "Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change" (Premier I am, second I was, Mouton never changes)
Currently in France about 20min away from Chateaus Lafite-Rothschild and Mouton-Rothschild. Bit pricey to do a tour of either though :D
Went to Chateau Lafon-Rochet last week and picked up a case of their 2006 first growth, very nice it is too - around £25/bottle. The cheaper (everyday) one is nice too. Very full-bodied, excellent with meat mmmm.
Due to the pound dying it's not especially cheap to buy wine here anymore, but the selection is fantastic. If anyone has any particular Bordeaux favourites I can try to find them at the supermarket (where "world" wines are simply wines from other parts of France :p) and bring home a few bottles :)
I think I've mentioned it before but the Virgin wines service is actually pretty good for getting a taste of a few different bottles, we rated them all in my flat. First thing I did was sign up to the website but not buy anything. After a few weeks I got an email asking why I hadn't bought anything and offered a really cheap deal. Delivery to your door and some really nice wines. Considering how nice they were and how cheap they worked out per bottle, I think I got a pretty good deal! The only catch is they automatically sign you up to pay £20/month into an account to buy more wine, but you can cancel it with an email very easily.

The £20/mo is the Virgin Winebank where you get £20 extra ever 3 months to put towards anything you buy. It's not a catch! Just one of the methods they offer - the other is the quarterly Discovery Club case which I have (accidentally as I forgot to cancel the last one, oops...I now have a case and a half of wine here :p), or you can just put together a case and order at any time.

Drinking a bottle of this (http://www.virginwines.com/product/prod_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444298330 6&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574489557690&bmUID=1238198262832) tonight and it's gorgeous :)
Michel Laroche Chablis St Martin is really rather nice, and thats coming from someone that doesnt particularly relish whites :)
I generally tend to go for Australian or South African Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon. They've not failed me yet :D
My favourite is a Morrisons 'The Best' Australian Shiraz. It's about £8 a bottle and I love it!
I'm by no means a wine buff but I like what I like:
Ernst & Julio Gallo Zinfandel / Grenache (or the blend) are nice light fruity Rose great for drinking alone or with chicken/fish meals :)
For other drinking I enjoy the sainsbury's box of "soft red wine" with the picture of a fish and baguette on it ;D
Sainsbury's does a nice Pinot Noir and I'm not a big fan of the reds.

[ Edit ] There is a £5 75cl bottle there but the URL is the same, odd.
Well taht was pointless. Just got back from sainsburys and couldn't find any of teh wines sugested, or even the ones I like and have ot from there before. But teh shelves where out of a few things.
On other news went to teh butcher today.
Pork belly
2 racks of ribs
pack of mixed game meet
Pack of diced venison
T-Bone steak :D
8 venison and red pepper sausages
400 grams diced Lamb
Should last most of the month and only cost £29. I doubt you could get hat cheaper in a supermarket.
