View Full Version : Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle

New series starts tonight at 10pm on BBC2.

Probably my favourite stand-up ever, and hopefully this show is as good as his usual stuff. Apparantly the 'sketches' aren't up to much but the rest (which I assume is either stand-up-esque, or possibly much like Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe) should be very amusing and at least unpatronisingly cerebral.

About time he was back on the TV. Lee and Herring's 'This Morning With Richard not Judy' used to be the best thing on at one point.

Yay, I like Stewart Lee. Remember watching Fist of Fun on Fridays when I was probably too young to appreciate it, but still enjoyed it. Plus he's usually politically spot-on.

He actually did this routine in Glasgow.

Balls. Of. Steel.

Have seen Stewert Lee and Richard Herrings last 3/4 tours each. The best 2 stand up comedians at the moment IMO :)

That clip is legendary :D

Brilliant!!! I LOVE Stewart Lee (& Richard Herring) and have seen him do the above clip live too. Will be tuning in at 10pm. Thanks Belmit!

Can you get TMWRNJ or FoF on DVD btw? I can't seem to find either anywhere.

Cheers, I'm just listening now to reacquaint myself with the genius of Mr Lee.

Normally I'd be out tonight but I'll definitely be watching the first episode since I've got the chance.

Nope. None of the networks seem to want to release them. You can get the odd episode through torrents and stuff though. Hope they change their minds about releasing them some time.

Hmm, couple of good jokes but I've seen him do better. Still, nice to see him back.

Just watched it and it's a bit of a mixed bag, the sketches are pretty rubbish and completely at odds with the general premise that the audience is smart enough to link in their own jokes. For the most part the comedy was considered and relatively smart but there was at least one routine that went on long after the point had been made.

If I'm in on a Monday night again then I'll probably watch it because I did largely enjoy it but I'm not sure I'd be going out my way to watch it based on the first show.

Oh well, I quite liked it. I'd forgotten how much he hated Dan Brown :D

I thought it was really good!

The sketches were weaker though and it would have been better as a straight 30 min stand up.

Really liked it.

Maybe I was being a bit harsh in my viewpoint but I'll be honest, I expected quite a lot from Mr Lee, his comedy is usually of the sort that presents itself and if you're not quick enough to follow then "tough" is the effective message, you catch up or get left way behind. This felt like it had been sanitised and simplified for a televisual audience (which is no doubt has) but I generally prefer my comedians to assume a basic level of 'smarts' from an audience and work from there without concessions to the slower members.

I guess that's the price he pays for getting on the television. TMWRNJ was, on the face of it, quite puerile but it had a more ironic undertone that almost poked fun at the institute that put them there. I reckon that has a lot to do with proper funny, clever people not getting television work. I'm willing to take a small reduction in quality if it gives a taste of his potential to a wider audience. Given more freedom I'm sure he himself would do away with the sketch parts and push the material further, and I'm pretty sure having Armando Iannucci (producing, IIRC) behind him was a big factor in his return.

On a slightly related note, we've booked tickets to see Richard Herring in April. Not seen him since we went to watch TMWRNJ at Warwick Uni yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears ago. :D

Well obviously not literally. I'm fairly sure his testes aren't cast from an iron-carbon alloy. ;)

Head to head with Armando Iannuchi:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00jd8gp

Armando Iannucci is the Executive Producer of Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle. Each week Armando calls Stewart to account…"If you think of Stewart as the driver of the vehicle and the arguments as his wheels, I suppose you can think of me as the man who can have Stewart sacked".

Happened to be in again this week and my previous comments still stand, I might watch the rest if I happen to be near a TV at the right time but I don't think I'll go out of my way to watch it.

A lot of the sketches tonight are from the last tour he did (41st best comedian). Especially the Del Boy stuff :)

Yeah I enjoyed that, much better than last week :) Even the wife was laughing, which is unusual for comedy that isn't produced by Disney.

Turned this on last night....then turned it off 5 minutes later ::/:

Don't know why, but just not my cup of tea. I mean, he cracks a few funnies but I just found him a bit droll and boring. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Same, just put it on iPlayer... not finding it funny at all. His delivery seems pretty awful to me, that's what kills it mostly. It's like he's trying to be very dry but failing, Jack Dee does it much better IMO.

Enjoyed this weeks immensely :D

I love it when he goes off on those "Stew, Stew, listen Stew" tirades about things people have told him. Political correctness gone mad :D
