View Full Version : Have I killed MSN?
Have I killed MSN or is it inexplicably dead?
Not working on 2 PCs in the house but noticed web messenger seems to be working, so wondered if I've knackered something.
Running MSN or Live Messenger? Live is.....alive here.
MSN.
I've just tried installing Live and it won't connect either :/
Just says it's temporarily not available.
Just had a quick look at help:
Error 81000314, 81000377 or 81000378: Your contact list is not available
If you receive one of these messages, your contact list is not available or is in read-only mode. Wait a few minutes, and then try to sign in again.
The first error code is the one I get.
Hmm, dunno then. Cant find anything on the MS sites, but they're never the fastest updating.
[edit]I've had that before and it did indeed go away on its own. Ages ago though.
Actually, I get a different error message sometimes too :/
Also says there's a problem with the firewall. But when I test the connection through its troubleshooter, I have no problems come up.
A couple of people on my list went offline earlier mid conversation and they're ntl customers too, so it could be an ntl issue.
Hmm hadn't thought of it from that angle. Maybe then.
They have been pretty good lately so maybe this is their revenge ;D

Probably! At work it randomly disconnects sometimes and a while later just suddenly reconnect.
Well 3 PCs in the house with MSN not working, unless the settings fairy has been around in the night, I suspect this problem is out of my hands :)
This doesn't fill me with confidence... I'm going back to ntl having had numerous problems with BT being incapable of giving me MaxDSL that stays up for longer than an hour or two.
I've been with NTL since the days they were cabletel and although the bad reports, they've been pretty good here :)
Does seem to vary by area though.
I was with them for a couple of years after I moved into the house and was so thoroughly fedup that as soon as ADSL became available I ditched them. Mind you, thinking back most of the problems were with the TV & telephone, neither of which I'll be using.
The extra bandwidth will be nice though, 10Mbit vs 4.5-5Mbit that I get now (when it decides to work)
And as if by magic they all work again.....
Been down since 9am, god knows what NTL have been poking.

Slightly off topic but there are things you can do to improve max dsl, i was having constant disconnections (quite annoying when playing WoW) but resolved it now so it's pretty steady and syncs at around 7.5 (downloads near that speed though).

Been there, done that :)

Tried yanking cables out of your phone sockets?
Even regular DSL seems to have it's moments. I got speeds down as far as 100 Kbps tonight. When you're trying to watch a 150 Kbps NASA feed, that's a bit of a problem.
Mind you, Houston most certainly had a problem tonight. They started a live press conference and all their TV kit went ape****. While the engineers were scurrying around trying to fix things, someone left a microphone switched on. Somehow I don't think they intended the resulting comments to be broadcast.

There is only one phone socket - the router plugs directly into the master socket using a filtered NTE5 faceplate, using a twisted pair RJ11 cable into a shiny new Cisco router. Trust me, I've done everything I can and BT have admitted that they can't improve the situation.
My house was brand new on a new area with very good condition phone lines and the wire i pulled out helped a lot. Could be worth trying anyway, there is a ringer wire, pretty much unused these days which can act as an aerial and cause interference. It's an orange wire which needs to be pulled out but i cant remember the other one, i'll try and find a link.
http://www.dslzoneuk.net/socket.php try step 4 :).
Like I said - been there, done that.
You didn't actually ;). Are you just too far away from the exchange then or just have a dirty line?
My attenuation is about 42dB, with SNR between 6 & 10dB. Anyway, I'll have a 10Mbit cable modem come Friday afternoon so I can ditch ADSL and flog my router on eBay.
What's the router dude? Anything special?
Cisco 877 but had the same issues with a 3725 with ADSL WIC and a Netgear something-or-other.
Top router that. I'm looking at a pair right now that are going into a couple of remote sites. Advanced IP services as well VLANing and such.
If I hadn't just bought a new VOIP-enabled wireless router I may well have been interested. :(
SNR of 6 is a little on the low side, but I'm not sure what the lower limit is these days.
12.4.9(T) Advanced IP Services on mine - works a treat when the ATM interface is up :/
6 is fine, anything lower than 5 may cause problems, 4 and below you're bound to have issues.
Ah, well that's OK then.
I had my phone line replaced after it snapped, so I don't have any problems these days (save for my ISP deciding that 200 Kbps is too much and not answering their phones). I'll guess that having an engineer-installed NTE5 and wiring helps too.
