View Full Version : G20 protests this week
Not looking forward to this, working right in the middle of the Square Mile 'n all. I'm not sure what to do as: I expect public transport to be pretty screwed up and I don't want to cycle in case my bike gets vanadilsed or I get stuck in the crowds. Work have sent a few emails round saying that all the doors will be locked and we all have to go round the back entrance (fnar). One thing is for sure, I'm not turning up in my work clothes in case I get targeted. Not that I expect any trouble but you never know. If only I could work from home!

Surprised some places in the City are opening tbh, sounds like it's going to be a right couple of days. Do you work somewhere that has to have staff in no matter what?
I work in Desktop Support so we always have to be in. Hopefully at least it will be quiet (in work that is!).

I didn't realise you worked in the city :)
****ing morons the lot of 'em.. As i said elsewhere, i saw a group of anti-capitalist demonstrators collecting their winings from a bookies. ****ing hypercrites.
Our work issued warning instructions around this saying we could either work remotely or re-arrange meetings. Now surely your place would operate reduced hours? I imagine "I fear for my safety" in coming to work going through a mob of protesters should carry some weight.
edit:- Do you have a backup location? The good that could come of this is for the London companies to test their backup office plans while this is on.

I'm not sure why people are giving into them really.
Just had this email:
G20 Anti Globalisation Protests expected in the City of London
The upcoming G20 Summit starts on the 2nd April in the Excel Centre in the Docklands. We have been advised that a number of protests are planned by various groups on the 1st and 2nd April in and around the City.
There are certain things we in London Branch can plan to help staff and to keep any disruptions to a minimum. Therefore we suggest the following for both days:
Cancel unnecessary meetings on both days
General Dress Down Policy for all staff members
Avoid confrontation with protesters. It is suggested that lunch and snacks are brought to work to avoid having to go out lunchtime.
Different working hours where possible. Demonstrations which could affect us are expected as follows: 1st April: 11am Meeting at Liverpool Street followed by march on the Bank of England and to no.62 and no. 280 Bishopsgate. 2nd April: Demonstration in Bishopsgate. There are other demonstrations expected but not currently known.
Avoid Bank Station, exits near the Bank of England and Liverpool Street Station exits into Bishopsgate and Liverpool Street. These could get busy or blocked at certain periods during the day.
The Facilities Team will take necessary steps to ensure Bavaria House is safe in case some of the protests spread in our direction.
We have also been assured that there is a full policing plan in place.
I remember at JH Schroder, some protestor managed get into the trading floor.. They beat the **** out of him.

Shouldn't really affect me, but Mrs Dym works down at Bank :/
She can't even work from home as the broadband isn't activated until Thursday :(
Of course there's meant to be an 0845 number to use with emergency dial up on O2 broadband but I can't find it anywhere... If anyone is on O2 and knows what that number is then it'd certainly be handy...
I dont understand these types of protests, these are the hypocrites that went to shop at supermarkets rather than their local shops and buy from conglomerates. A case of not in my back yard brigade.

A case of not in my back yard brigade.I don't think so. I suspect that for the most part they are students out for a bit of a rumble and a laugh encouraged by some fairly hard-line die-hard SWP members whose lives pretty much went on hold when the Poll Tax was abolished.
Local shops, local shops, what century / country are you living in? ;)
I got paid 12 pound an hour to sit on the Reception desk of E D and F Mann the commodity brokers one year during the May Day Protests about 9 years ago. Spent most of the day sat up on the roof with 2 security guards and binoculars watching the rent-a-mob twits.

This is probably going to sound really lame, but I hope anyone who has to work/be in that area this week stays safe.

Bwahahaha!
Supposedly Westminster's CCTV isn't good enough to be used to police the protests so is going to be shut down for the next few days...

Muppets. I can't believe a brand new Wi-Fi camera system isn't up to analog broadcast standards.

Thanks. My girlfriend was actually quite worried but I think it will be ok. I'm going to brave the crowds on my bike and stick it in our IT crowd stylee underground hideout.
These protestors are such hypocrites it's laughable. Bunch of pricks.
A friend of mine used to work in the stock exchange at the last rallye they had I think he broke into the office, and from the balcony they were dropping £1 coins and pouring champagne at the protestors in the forecourt - that REALLY riled them up I bet it was hilarous. Naughty, but funny.
Heh yeah there are some great stories from the last big protests, about traders burning £50 notes and throwing them down at the protesters and the oil traders that gave a bunch of protesters who broke in a proper shoeing and threw them out, lol
'Suspect package found outside Bank station'. Lucky I cycled!

Right I'm ready, I'm going in disguised as Vivian from The Young Ones.. Totally inconspicuous!
Not incredibly exciting! Got in about 11:40am for the late shift and got in fine. I can see where the police are baricading the protesters in the Bank junction type area from one of our meeting rooms. The most exciting thing I've seen is some guy walk past completely naked! Didn't even look like he was protesting or shouting, just walking along in the sunshine! Might pop to the pub in a bit....

The better half was told to be dress down today - DB are pretty worried about the numpties it seems.
What exactly are they protesting about? Do they even know themselves?

I just got a text from a friend saying there's a bunch of people wandering about in the nuddy! Awesome!
Maybe they took dress-down a little too literally :p
Sounds like they've smashed their way in to a branch of RBS.
Just go home you muppets.

Tell me about it. You know what one of the protestors said on the tv? "They brought it on themselves..." :/
At least there are some peaceful well planned protests, and not rioting going on. What a bunch of pricks. "Consumers suck" - biggest pile of hypocracy and gibberish I've ever heard!

One of my fav rants from another forum...
Positive Action? What positive action are they taking? Half of them probably don't even have any bloody idea what they're protesting about. Ask any of them about climate change and they'll probably be able to list three half-baked "facts" from the Guardian and then have absolutely no idea how they correlate to real life whatsoever.
It's just a huge bunch of unemployable ****wits who really don't have anything better to do than try and make people who don't give a **** listen to their whinging about a load of **** that people with a life to lead don't give a **** about.
;D
Personally I'm waiting for Cartman to arrive!

If theyre so passionate about the causes they believe in, why do so many of them have their faces covered up so they cant be identified. If I believed in something that strongly, I would want to stand up and be counted, not hide behind a scarf or a hood.
Kind of makes me lose all respect for them to be honest.
^Yup, that has always bugged me and I never understood it.
lulz, when they smashed the windows of the RBS, all those photographers right at the front.
It was probably an undercover reporter who did it. The moment those windows broke, up shot about a hundred cameras lol. Respect to he cozzers for doing such a hard job.
