View Full Version : Rubbish movies you have a soft spot for..

As mentioned in the Rate the movie you last watched thread, what are your soft spot fairly rubbish films?

I love Demolition Man.

It's utterly crap, but wonderful. The presence of Sandra Bullock helps more than a little bit :o
"Let's go blow this guy!"

The Original Star Wars trilogy.

Let's face it, they really are crap. Scratch the surface and you've got a weak plot, filled with fortune cookie wisdom and two dimensional characters.

But they're still awesome :)

More to come when I think of them (don't have my DVD collection here to reference)

The original star wars trilogy is AWESOME man! Shutyerface! :p

Hot Shots part 1 and deux. Dire, but hilarious it a stupid way.

But but but it has Salma Hayek *the* most beautiful woman EVER! It therefore negates the fact the film is ****e! :p

Con Air - good call.

Totally agree with Demolition Man. Should be a poor poor film but I've lost count of the number of times I've seen it.

Also, Fifth Element. Absolutely shocking plot and pretty poor acting. Bruce "Wooden Man" Willis as poor as ever and I don't understand how Gary Oldman managed to ever find work again after this load of nonsense.
The excellent visuals are what make this film worth watching - that and Mila Jovovich. Actually, mostly Mila Jovovich - but the visuals are still good :p

Likewise, it was good fun, Gary Oldman was excellent for the role, camping it up to just the right level.

The Jean Paul Gaultier designed costumes and aliens added to the look and feel perfectly.

Oh and.. mmmm.. Milla Jovovich *drool*

I thought he did it too camp - but then, I've always thought he has a tendency to overact a bit.

I agree on the "good fun" synopsis though - I don't think the film was ever meant to be taken seriously, just good mindless, uncomplicated entertainment.

Another vote for Demolition Man.

I also love Last Action Hero, despite it getting universally panned, and Judge Dredd. I wasn't ever a big comic fan so I don't have to forgive the allegedly gash realisation.

The Rock?
The Rock is a classic action movie! It's almost perfect!
Gary Oldman was sensational in that film - as he is in almost everything he's ever done. I LOVE Fifth Element, and it's definitely NOT a bad movie.

True Lies
Wrong. It's Awesome and arguably the GREATEST action movie ever.

Short Circuit
Erm, it's definitely not rubbish. It's still great, even now. It's just a brilliant 80's film!
Batteries not included (though I could argue this is not a rubbish film... but a legendary one!)
One of the BEST films of the 80's. Impossible to say it's rubbish.
Home Alone
Genius movie.
Karate Kid
I learned almost all my life lessons from Mr. Miyagi, so you're wrong :P.
Legally Blonde
Nope, love this!
Highlander
WHAT?! It's amazing and still has the best song from a movie ever! The others were rubbish, but the first Highlander was actually quite influential.

Dude Where's My Car
Fast and The Furious (the first one)
AVP
Correct on all 3 accounts.

What Women Want (every man should watch this film... thrice :p)
This is actually a great Rom-Com.

That Steven Segal film on a boat... in fact... all of Steven Segals films...
lol, so true.

All films Bill Paxton is in
Barring 'True Lies' and 'Apollo 13', you're definitely right! He has the worst agent!

Ace Ventura
The birth of a legend! It's one of the great comedies of our time!

Jaws
YES! It is rubbish, finally someone else who agrees with me. Though definitely enjoyable :p.

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot....
Perfect example of a really awful movie that you just can't turn over!

All of the Beverley Hills Cop
The Nutty Professor
Never thought of these, completely agree.

See now the films I listed are filums I have been told are "rubbish" in my time and I've been like "oh... I don't think they are!!"

;D

Picky loves every blooming Jean Claude Van Dam film ever. It drives me nuts. (I don't know whether it's the film he loves or Jean's butt ;D)

A load of people I know like The Big Lebowski too... though they would say it was a genius film. I would rather pick Boris Johnsons nose and eat it than watch that film EVER again!!

Oh and Highlander... watched it the other night and it's sooooooo awful! It really is!! But it was a must watch! Partially just to be amused at the size of the lead dudeys forehead ;D Did you know there's going to be a remake though?! Should be good!!

Oh yeah, everyone has movies that they just happen to have a soft spot for - even though deep down you know they're not that good.

Demolition Man, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and White Men Can't Jump for me

So if everyone likes Demolition Man then it must not be rubbish? We should all give it 10 on IMDB and give Paul Verhoeven a little boost :)

I have to add Miss Congeniality to the list as well.:o And maybe Knights Tale.

Pitch Black and The Rock are both completely brilliant and I can't understand why they're mentioned in this thread.

Con air

Con Air is a brilliant film, I've said it before and I'll say it again - whoever thought Nicholas Cage should do a Southern accent is a genius.

Tango and Cash FTW!

A real 80s classic.

Highlander

Sean Connery in unable to do any other accent shocker. I like Sean Connery as an actor, in fact I think I'm legally obligated to as a Scotsman regardless of what qualities he has but he is atrocious at anything other than being Sean Connery - an Irish Cop, a Russian submarine captain, an Egyptian immortal, all Sean Connery with his patented Scottish brogue sounding precisely nothing like any of the accents should.

The Replacements is a pretty rubbish film by most standards but I could quite happily watch it every week of the year, I don't even know why really, it stars Keanu Reeves who has an emotional range that makes Steven Seagal look accomplished and yet I still love it.

For that matter I actually enjoy most of Steven Seagal's films too, they're almost universally poor in some sense but I can still watch them without any qualms.

Absolutely. Hence I know I'm going to be a bit of a martyr with my Star Wars trilogy comment.

Star Wars really is utter space opera schlock. The first film is the worst of them all for it.

I really can't help but love it though.

NokkonWud
01-04-2009, 10:07
I don't know, a lot of rubbish films that people like have a sort of Cult following. Sunshine strikes me as a bit of a slow burner in that respect. Never seen it, but it's a real 50/50 movie, love or hate.

Streeteh
01-04-2009, 10:23
Thing about sunshine is its ridiculous, things like them flying that close to the sun just seem impossible... but then i consider that in 1984 when i was born iirc there were less than 3000 internet enabled devices in the world, so i guess anything is possible in that sort of time frame. He keeps it smart by never actually saying what year they're in, it could be in 5 yrs time, or it could be several centuries from now so technically no one can scoff and say 'that's just impossible', as no one will rightfully know.

It just annoys me that peoples criticisms are that its too unrealistic. It's sci-fi for christs sake? Don't see anyone going on about how unrealistic Star Trek is.
