View Full Version : Strange request, i need to destroy the performance of a wireless router...

Beacon Interval (msec, range: 1~65535, default: 100)
RTS Threshold (range: 256~2432, default: 2432)
Fragmentation (range: 256~2346, default: 2346, even number only)
DTIM Interval (range: 1~255, default: 3)
Wireless Mode mixed mode G mode
TX Rates (Mbps)
SSID broadcast Enable Disable
These are my options in the advanced section, what should i mess around with here to make sure it drops and is generally slow and unreliable?
As it stands it is slow and unreliable, but not enough for my flatmates to think its worth replacing this (free!!!) router. It's slowing cracking me up having to reconnect every so often and not being able to rely on it even working to connect to my server. I just want to buy another WRT but as long as this is here i'd have to foot the bill.
I've thought about microwaving it as that should kill it and be undetectable, but we've already had two routers die of natural causes so i don't think i could really convince them this has died as well. Well actually i probably could because they really don't have a clue, but thats not the point i just want this to be painfully slow for them so they can feel what i feel.
My flatmates really do actually do my head in as well before anyone asks so no worries there, i'd like to talk reasonable with them but you honestly can't bargain with these people. I do more than enough for them :)
Can't you just DDoS yourself?
Connect your laptop (if you have one) to it wirelessly and max out the bandwidth with something like Grabit. Time it when they're on Youtube or similiar media site so it really crunches and buffers.

That would be easy, BUT i have less than 1Gb free space on my latpop at all times, otherwise yeah sounds great. I need a foolproof solution that'll work whilst i'm not there :(
How easily could i DDoS my own router? lmao this sounds weird now :p
What exactly are you trying to choke? The wireless network in particular? The Web connection?
How about a large packet continual ping?
Set up a PC as a router with SSID hidden but on the same channel (or +/- one channel) as the router, preferably close by - interference should knacker things a bit.
Or just set the PC up with the same SSID and security as the router and turn wi-fi on the router off - the router will look like it is connected but just won't work (if they're not smart enough to look too closely at the router).
Other than that, saturating the wi-fi will do it. Spudnik has the right idea, but try the broadcast address first (xx.xx.xx.255).
Ideally you want to make it drop out on them so they get annoyed. If they think the internet is just too slow they might not logically assume it's the router at fault.
Actually, if they're not observant enough to go look at the router, just loosening the antenna would have pretty bad results, but if they went and looked you'd be in a world of ****. :)
Replace the antenna with a breadstick.

Great ideas guys i will see what i can do soon, off to work to "train" now. Daz essentially make their wireless activity living hell, dropping connection, poor tranfer so they can't watch iplayer or youtube, just generally spaff it up. I mean it is useless now but not enough for them to warrant spending £6 each, so i need to make it so... :p
£6 each?
Give them a slap for being such cheap ****s

Beer is ALWAYS the answer ;)
Tip a glass over the router.
My old WRT54G and brand new WRT54G on stock, tomato and ddwrt firmware all freeze after a few days use :(
My old WRT54GS runs for months on Sveasoft Talisman. Haven't tried any of the others. Newer models may have been braindamaged sadly.
One's an ancient WRT54G v1.1, the other is a newest revision WRT54GL
on a side note i just have to say...
my 54G is the best router I've ever had and i can't think of any way to make it better. (maybe more regular DD-WRT updates)
its perfect... sits on my network and lets me do everything my ISP don't want. they try to limit the number of devices i can connect... and i just clone MAC addresses through the one connection \o/ whoo. DD-WRT-FTW.

...Can you elaborate on the benefits and say which build of DD-WRT you are using please? I have a spare WRT54G v1.1 router and would like to use it to "experiment" with WiFi.
Ta :)
yeah sure...
i'm using DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/22/08) std (SVN revision 10564)
Now I didn't actually ever use the router with it's default firmware so can't make any comparisons but the reasons i love it would be (and not to say these are exclusive to DD-WRT)
- its solid as a rock, stays connected all the time, no issues. (with scheduled weekly reboot)
- it can do far more than i'm likely to ever need it to. I don't even truly understand all features.
- it allows me to run all my devices through both it's wireless and wired connections under the same mac address so that i don't have any access problems on my authenticated connection to my ISP.
- its nice and secure, LAN and WAN both working very nicely.
- it logs all sorts. shows me nice real-time graphs for bandwidth of the LAN & WAN and also shows me a bar chart of traffic month by month.
i could keep going. basically i love it.
To kill any access point and keep it down without physically breaking it, you just send deauth packets out. That will disassociate every client from the AP and they will have to reconnect. Enough deauth packets broadcast = nobody connecting at all.

And how would one go about sending these?

Leech a legal torrent, set the upload to unlimited and let it fly. After a day of seeding they'll be fed up of every website taking an age to load; blame it on the router and indulge in some DD-WRT goodness.

Now THIS sounds like a good idea, saturate upload connections massively with a popular album. I don't need a massive file just a silly amount of allowed simultaneous upload connections with utorrent. Genius.
Jaunty RC is out on Thursday, that'll attract some leechers :)

Perfect a legal way to kill the pipe even better, i'm not really a fan of over sharing on my torrents, i'm a usenet man myself :D I'll be the first to get on that :)

Obtain a wireless card that is compatible with the Madwifi drivers. Atheros cards are good, Ubiquiti make some great hardware too.
Then Google is your friend, searching for deauthentication packets and direct packet injection is the way to do it.
