hey,

I prefer to connect everything over ports on the main board over ports on hubs so the other day when i had to remove my ipod USB cable to connect my hd dvd drive i found an old apple firewire cable and thought i'd use that for my classic instead of usb.

trouble is it only seems to charge from that cable, itunes wont pick up the ipod :(
does anybody know if its possible to still connect ipods (classics) to a windows pc via firewire?

Depends how old it is. Someone on here said Apple had removed the Firewire 'gubbins' from the latest generation.

lame. i seem to be suffering from using old stuff recently...

i guess the cable probably came with my 1st gen US ipod mini many years ago. i've not seen a firewire cable come with an ipod for a long time now. didn't think they'd also remove the support for a data connection via that port also :(

oh well.. will have to use the hub on my hd dvd drive then.

Yep, Apple removed the firewire support. They did it in stages, first they removed iTunes connectivity over firewire and then removed the ability to charge them over firewire. Swines.

My 4th Gen 20gig worked with my book over firewire but sadly my machine here doesn't have firewire so I can't test it :( I know for a fact the touches won't connect or charge via firewire.

Burble - up until the latest revision of iTunes I could update my old iPod via firewire but since it's died I can't check with the current version.
