Just thought I would start a thread and see if anyone else wanted to add to it. I do try and stick to a shopping list so I don't go too mad in the supermarket, but it's also nice to try new things. It's always good to hear when someone has tried something new and get some recommendations. So here are two of my most recent discoveries:

Tesco Cottage Cheese With Sun Blushed Tomatoes and Cracked Black Pepper - lovely stuff, great to have with some salad or a jacket potato for a quick simple meal.

Innocent Vegeatable Pots (http://www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/things_we_make/vegpots/) - Admittedly these aren't cheap, however, the ones I have had so far are really tasty. 3 portions of veg and quite a few of them also have >90% GDA fibre. Again great as a quick meal. The only word of warning is that the Thai coconut curry one is not suitable for vegetarians as there is fish sauce in it.

It's nice to cook from scratch and make your own stuff, but it's nice to have some quick and easy things to hand for those busy days too :)

Sainsburys Value Brie (in the white and orange package) is still pretty much the nicest brie I have tasted.

Ahhh, useful divine - thank you. In our experience, Tesco's regular brie is rubbish and Morrisons regular brie is pretty nice. Will have to try the Sainsburys Value one :)

The cottage cheese sounds nice too Mubs.

Aldi/Lidl belgian chocolate is superb! For a fraction of the price of 'normal' chocolate. And I'm pretty picky when it comes to my chocs. They do all different types too, well worth checking out. Also they do fruit pot things like the ones that tesco do for about £1.50, but they are .79p. 5 of your 5 a day in one pot and really yummy. Yoghurts are fab too and they do full ranges of spanish/greek olives, chorizo, pesto additions like mushrooms, artichokes etc and imported mediterranean food for very reasonable prices.

I first went to Aldi/Lidl about 18 months/2 years ago after a friend mentioned inexpensive salad veg. Didn't expect much but have shopped there on a regular basis ever since. And people who visit for tea/cakes/home cooking always comment on how good the food is!

I must admit, I very rarely go into Aldi and if I do, it's for their Sunday offers (last time we got an angle grinder for about 25p). Love the sound of cheap/good antipasti type stuff though. Will definitely go and have a gander, especially with summer coming up.

well remember your pasta & sauce that evening you came down? All ingredients from aldi or lidl, can't remember which. I think they vary wildly depending on location (all the fruit/veg/meat is sourced locally from a number of fabby farms we have around here) but the imported stuff should be the same. Most of their stock is branded now, you just have to go in knowing what you're looking for and be prepared to take a bit of time to get to know what you want and what's good. I'm a fussy bugger and would never sacrifice quality for cost but if I can get both then I'm a happy bunny!

Well, we have them both very close by, so I'll pop in at some point when I'm ready for another shop and see what sort of quality they offer :)

OMG, went into Aldi on the way home from the gym tonight and they had jars of anti pasti (peppers, tomatoes, olives, mushrooms, mixtures) for just over a quid. Bought one of mushrooms, one of peppers, a big bag of pasta and some of those sieved tomatoes (begin with P but I can never remember the name) for £3! Nice :D

They do this incredible cheese in Waitrose which has jalapeno peppers in it, it's a hard cheese, not sure if it's a cheddar or something like that, but I bought a small block and it's so moreish - and you get this nice spicy tingle surrounded by a lovely creamy nutty cheese. Rather hooked on it. I'm sure other places do it, but this is where I've come across it.

24-04-2009, 16:30

I got the fabbiest chorizo (4 little fat ones) from Aldi the other day. Usually about a quid but because they were out of date on Monday (this was sunday) they were 20p!! Bargainous and they were trememdously nommy with red pesto sauce and pasta!

5 Litres of Castrol GTX Derv Oil is 15.99, That is Cheap for Quality oil.

Small set of those watch screw drivers which includes a spec mending kit with screws & mini screw driver, 1.69 or 1.99 can't remember but just the spec mending kit is worth that let alone getting the watch screw drivers for your system builds etc.

Also they have a deal on Plastic plates/Beakers/Bowls in a Nice Blue & around 60p to a pound a pop. I have them in my Camper but they would be good for BBQ's or kiddy partys etc.

Nowt else stands out this week apart from a few new items we are running, Always look out for the cross over period when we introduice New products into a store, They are marked down & packed large & are Always Excellent buys to suck you in, Take advantage till the end of the first batch then move on to the next new items.
At the moment we have Own Braand Crispy Salad being pushed to bump the branded ones that established the sales off, (Kin cheeky Tactics but its a Business)

Borough Market have some pretty awesome stuff. I'd say that any supermarket Feta is going to be probably fairly generic, then again once you've had the "real thing" it's hard not to compare! :D

Sainsburys are doing some new ice cream flavours: chocolate brownie, raspberry pavlova, strawberry cheesecake and rocky road. They're currently £2 for a litre.

Only tried the rocky road but it's sooooo nice :D Maybe not quite as nice as Ben and Jerry's but for practically half the price, it's delicious and I'll certainly be looking out for it again!

This one isn't exactly the same but when I looked at the ingredients most of them seemed to be the same, it has the shea butter and 'skin illuminators' in it. http://www.auravita.com/products/AURA/LEFA10191.asp seems they have slightly different products in the UK.

I used to use this one myself a fair bit and it was really nice. Used to get it from Tesco when it was on special. It's not been that long since I got some.

I'm not normally a fan of Tesco fish, but they have smoked salmon fillets on offer at the fish counter for 99p each at the moment. We had some tonight and they were beauuuuuuutiful. Think I'll be going back to get a few more for the freezer. When they're smoked, they don't need anything else on them. Just a drizzle of olive oil, maybe a sprinkle of dill and 15 mins in the oven on GM7.

Asparagus is also on offer in Tesco at the mo, so I got some of that and roasted it in the tin next to the salmon. Delish!

Don't forget to pick up some Strawberrys as they are on offer as well.
Also Charcoal is on Bogof which is a 5kg bag I think for around a fiver so 2 for 1 is a great saving there. As it is BBQ time those going places with no leccy could do with picking up the small wind up radio for 7 quid, It is small but I've had it out the box & tried it in store & it sounds good enough for a Picnic set up for Footy scores or a bit of radio.

Asda are doing 2 for £3 on some amazing ice cream at the minute. It's own brand but looks and tastes like Cart d'Or. Mint choc chip and strawberry pavlova is ace!

I was addicted to the Bachelor's pasta things where you mix water, milk and butter then the stuff in the packet in a pot. Asda are doing own brand ones for cheaper and the have "real" bits of chicken and mushroom and just taste better than the branded ones. Not tried the smartprice ones yet but money's getting tight so might be next weeks snacks :D

Forgot about this thread, otherwise I would have mentioned Marks & Spencer's South-Eastern Australian Cabernet Sauvignon called 'Lost Sheep'. It was down from £6.29 a bottle to £4.49, and frankly one of the best reds I've had in years despite the low price. I got through about 12 bottles of it and still have another 6 left... and have ordered another case of 12 at full price. Search it out! I can also recommend their pesto and flame-grilled vegetable pizza, and their Cornish Crunch cheese. Their fresh noodles are great in stir-fries too, better than most I've tried. Much more bite to them than most.
