View Full Version : Mmmm... toasty.
Know why my machine has been acting a bit strangely since I went to dual core goodness.. cpu is sitting at 70 degrees even when idle :(, about 21 degrees above system temp. Need to think about:
a) more arctic silver 3, I ran out whilst applying it but think I've got a good enough layer
b) switching to slightly higher air-flow fans.
c) cooling room down a tad :)
How much AS3 did you put on? Too much and it'll do a fantastic job of insulating your CPU. I use a layer thin enough that I can read the text on the CPU die.

Indeed, you can't beat good metal on metal contact, the thermal compound should only be there in a tiny quantity just to fill the gaps caused by imperfections on the surface of the heatsink.
I apply the smallest blob to the corner of the cpu, and then spread it with the edge of a plastic membership card. It litterally is the thinest spread possible.
What heatsink and fan are you using?
I have some AS5 knocking about I could send you, if you wanted it. Never really used AS3 so not sure if there's a massive difference there.

At that sort of temp the system should reset itself depending on the BIOS setting limits. Mine is set to 70 I think.. I think Paul maybe right.. you may have used to much AS :D

And depending on the processor. 70 is actually within the accepted operating environment for some chips these days, though in reality I don’t think anyone would be happy with it.

I can bring my tube of AS along for you on friday if you like young Jarp...
giving stuff to people > posting stuff :p
Might be worth it.. I tried to go for a fairly thin spread, but I was literally squeezing the last dregs out of my AS3 so it might not be consistent enough. I've had that AS3 for a long time now (since I had a tbird 1.4ghz)
I've got an Arctic Cooler 64 as an HSF. I think my biggest concern is that my general case temps are up a bit over their old pre X2 days, so I think I may need to go for a proper 80m front case fan rather than my SilenX one.

Better case fan would be a good idea, X2s radiate a fair bit more heat than single cores.
The Arctic 64 should be perfectly good enough for the CPU.
The difference between AS3 and AS5 is about 1-2 degrees so doesn't make a huge difference. The fact that your AS3 is old dregs is most likely to be the cause. Get the AS5 from Dym and spread it on thinly as suggested.
If that doesn't work, the IHS on your CPU may be making poor contact with the chip. About the only answer to that is to remove the IHS which is quite a tricky procedure and frankly, not recommended for the faint hearted.

Just got home and checked... It's only AS3 (I never said it was AS5 Stan ;)), but I shall bring it along with me on friday, just don't drop it in your pint... Or even worse, my pint!

I know you didn't, I thought about playing safe by just saying AS but being the sort of guy who lives life on the edge, I decided to take a chance on AS5 - what can I say?
You win some - you lose some.

Bollocks bollocks bollocks.
Whilst my system was running a tad warm, 70 degrees it is not.
Stupid MBM5 software screws up my mobo's temperature sensors :)
I remembered that I'd installed nTune on my system on sunday when I rebuilt it, so yesterday whilst looking at the cooling I triggered that off as it has nice graphs over time so I could see how temps raised.
Ohh.. look 35 degrees.
*triggers cpu-burn*
Ohh look.. 55 degrees, stable.
*opens up mbm5*
Ohh look, instantly 70 degrees and climbing.
Hmmmm.
Still, I've replaced the front case fan with another 92mm Zalman to increase case airflow, and have a nice 120mm Zalman I can use at the back (but would rather not as its a little loud)

Such language from such a quiet young man :p
That sounds much more reasonable. I used to use to use MBM all the time but I started to realise it sucks with certain motherboards and decided it wasn't reliable. Nowadays I tend to rely on the apps that come with the mobo for temp monitoring.
Stan:)
Hmm... now I know why its running hot. I've got it uber overclocked :D

lol nice overclock Garp! :D
My X2-3800 temps had been creeping up even though the weather was getting cooler, anyway I cracked it open yesterday and hoovered out all the fluff which had seemed to have blocked most of the grills (CM Stacker so grillage all round) and swapped out the stock HSF with crusty compound for a lovely Freezer 64 Pro and a tiny skim of some Akasa AK-450 (best I could find in my tin'o'tricks)
Lo and behold I've gone from a CPU temp of 56C and case temp of 42C down to a CPU temp of 42C and case temp of 34C all measured with both cores maxed out for a day or so - thankyou Churchill :p
lol nice overclock Garp! :D
Seems the Nvidia panel gets screwed up by various processes. At the time I took that screenshot I was playing "Freedom Force vs The Third Reich". After about 30 seconds it dropped down to the real, stock, value.
