View Full Version : Expensive watch insurance and/or general insurance?

So i need some insurance for my 21st Birthday present, my Maurice Lacroix Open Heart Peseux Masterpiece MP7108. I was thinking of just general house insurance anyway to include my bike and watch, but it seems insurance in a shared accommodation flat is actually outrageous since we don't have internal locking doors and apparently can't trust each other (done pretty well for 2 years already).
Anyway i want to insure it for theft/loss/damage anywhere really, i could never ever replace it if the worst happened but at least its some consolation. I've had a wee search online but i'm not really finding much.
Any decent student insurance though that could cover my phone, laptop, mountain bike and watch (pretty much everything i would rather not lose/break in life) inside and out would be pretty cool including the car i guess as well... Although i guess i'm expecting miracles ;D
Not possible with student insurance because you're all thieving s*** :p :p
Joking of course, but check the valuables limit on your current policy. Insurance at student digs is very much a specialist area and the preserve of the likes of Endsleigh, so I wouldn't hold up much hope of getting it covered on the contents insurance if you've already explored that.
However, have you explored the possibility of putting it on the insurance in Liverpool?

We haven't got any insurance policy atm and haven't had one over the last year* :p Dad isn't really willing to put it on our insurance at home, wants me to do it separately. I offered to pay him to difference, but tbh the house insurance we have is pretty stingy it wouldn't cover most things that i'd manage to do with it away from home or outside it seems...
*Worryingly really since between us we've all got thousands of £££'s worth of stuff, no that's not an invite to break in :p
Single item insurance it is then. You can expect to pay for the privilege so for all its spangly goodness you might want to think about whether it's worth the risk/cost.

Is it worth more than 2 grand? I'm pretty sure that's the threashold for most single items on standard house insurance.
My contents is about £26 a month with zero excess and any item either inside my house or outside up to that value.

Its worth it, nearly went mental the other day when i thought i'd lost it. Its something i can actual replace but if i did lose i'd want something for. 21st Birthday present manual winding watch is about as sentimental as i get... :p
Chuckles its worth about 2 grand, i can't really get contents insurance though from the few providers i've spoken to unless i get a lock internally on my door to my room in my flat. Which i can't be bothered doing and if i did i wouldnt use anyway making the insurance void. Otherwise that seems a good idea...

Moneysupermarket forums recommend this place for jewellery insurence

Alternatively, but 10 lottery tickets a month and hope to get lucky ;)

That's not what I meant. I was suggesting that perhaps it's worth thinking about putting it somewhere safe until you're an ex-student. Better safe than taken out and lost with no insurance.

Nah i'm not someone to hide things away Mark, i live for now, i want to enjoy and wear it now. Student or not, sounds silly maybe but i don't see the point in having something so nice and not using it.
THMarch look very good, did a web quote and they'll charge £90 for a years worth of cover on upto £2000 loss and i could include other personal items in this (phone and laptop spring to mind the way they word it) anywhere in the world upto 30 days cover. Webquote seems pretty comprehensive but gonna ring them tomorrow and make sure i've got everything right. Cheers guys! :)
I'm pretty sure Endsleigh will insure you on your own in a shared house, have you checked them? There is an option to add extra individual items over £1k.

They want just shy of £500 with my watch, laptop and phone :p Didn't even bother telling them i had a bike worth £1k since they only had options that don't include their "premium bike insurance" upto £400... THMarch are looking pretty promising atm!
My advice is that keep it at home until you move out of your student house, I can't imagine wearing such a thing as a everyday watch !
That's a really nice watch, I really like the look of it. I didn't know that Maurice Lacroix did any as expensive as that, my Dad has a Maurice Lacroix Pontos and that's really nice.
I got my Seamaster from Goldsmiths, and they have a really quite cheap policy that covers accidental damage as well, I don't know if you can buy it if your watch wasn't bought there, though.
I really should have taken out that policy, I've some scratches on my bracelet clasp now :( They don't bother me that much, and I intend to keep my watch, so I guess it doesn't matter, it's an everyday watch so it's bound to get a few knocks! Don't listen to anyone who says that you shouldn't wear it, why should you not? The only time I don't wear mine is when I am planning on getting very drunk :p

Exactly, by not wearing it i'm defeating the point of owning it, i don't want it just to look at. I love the times i'm just sitting around outside somewhere glance at the time and a think "**** i love this watch and my parents excelled themselves choosing it, its perfect". I've even sent random texts to my mum telling her my watch is amazing (sounds teh gay but it really means that much to me).
Also i've been out totally drunk with it more times than i can remember, only because i ever intend to get so drunk beforehand really. Which is kinda what happened Sunday morning. I always wake up the next day in a sweat thinking "where the **** is my watch" for it to just be on the side where i always place it (i'm amazingly automnomous when drunk/paralytic :p). Except Sunday it had fallen to one side and managed to get pretty well covered so for that day i was ****ing myself.
I think she actually bought it from Goldsmiths actually, so i might look into that as well then i guess, i'll give her a ring later and ask if she was offered anything. :) Need to go the bank first and get money sorted out before i bother phoning for insurance but THMarch do still look good!
A nice watch is there for wearing. I've worn mine pretty much all the time since I bought it over 11 years ago. It's been through hell in those years of drinking, stag do's, falling over, snowboarding, mountain bike and motorbike crashes, paintball and sex. Whatever I've done since I've had it, it's been on my wrist and I wouldn't have it any other way :)

Ouch. I added my cheapish bike and £30k worth of contents and it was under £200!

Amazing, sorting this out definitely on Monday now (coinciding with my student loan ;)). THMarch have definitely not been beaten after much other random searching around. I don't really need to insure anything else when i think about it. Laptop will come with extended warranty (Dell), Bike i just don't leave or trust to leave anywhere, and phone if i lose i can deal with thats my own silly fault. :D
Thanks Chaps :)
