View Full Version : Unreal - An older version ?
My boy saw me playing UT2004 a couple of nights ago and wants it on his PC, but he's got an old box and won't run the latest version.
Is there an older version of it that I can get which will run on what I think is a PIII-700 (or maybe an 800) with half a gig of RAM and integrated graphics?
What graphics chipset is it?
I have absolutely no idea.
Unreal Tournament will work on that I think, might be able to sort you out a copy too :) Same basic game, just less different modes of play.
The original Unreal (so Unreal Tournament) engine would be fine on the CPU and with that memory, but the type of onboard graphics is the key. If it's a cheap chipset, you can kiss and 3d stuff goodbye. Worse, it might not even support DX9 :/
Does he game on it currently?
UT doesn't need DX9 iirc. I don't think it even existed back then :p
He plays some games but nothing that is 3d stuff. I figured that an older version wouldn't be anywhere near as graphically intense.
If you could Jen, that'd r0x0r his b0x0rs ;)
ur right Haly.. I got UT sat in a box right beside me (in a pile of games I should really flog / scrap)
That system would run it fine
Just dug out the box (yes I have the box ) for it:
System requirements:
200mhz cpu
32mb ram (64mb recommended)
400mb hd space
dx7 compatible sound card
pci local bus video card (8mb 3d accelerator recommended)
PM me your address Feek and I'll get a copy sorted :)
My box just says Windows 9X compatible sound card
and 120min 605rec HDD
Might be different versions. Mine is the Game of The Year version so it'll be covering requirements for the extras disc.

Yeah i'm sure it's a DX8 game but as Daz said, it might not even support that.. You could always wack in a cheap AGP card like a an older Radeon 8500 or better an 9800 pro.
No I couldn't. It's a Compaq box with no expandibility that I blagged from work.
PM being sent, ta ;)
I don't see why it won't work anyway, it may not look excessively pretty but UT won't look very pretty anyhow. A 9800pro would be real overkill imo.

Old onboard graphics. It's essentially software rendering, and even though it's old, it's still a 3D engine. All depends on the chipset really.

I used to play loads of games on a cyrix 333 with software rendering and a k6-2 450 with software rendering till I got a Geforce256. Doesn't look great but it works. And they were extremely crap onboard chipsets, must have been to go with a cyrix.

I've been playing this recently - it's lots of fun - as much fun as UT2004 (my 2 favourites atm).
Thanks Jen :x

I used to run UT well enough on a 800Duron with onboard graphics. However framerates dropped a chunk when I changed from WinME to WinXP...

The original UT rocks.... so much better than the newer versions! Feek junior is in for a treat!

Up to now, I prefer UT2004. Maybe it's because I started playing that first. I'm not saying I don't like the original, it does indeed rock - I just think UT2004 rocks harder ;)
Stan :)

I'm posting it to him in about 20mins :)
