I have a 300d sat here doing nothing, a couple of 1Gb CF cards, a flash, Lowepro bag and some other toys you'd just need a lens. Its not mint by any stretch of the imagination but it works and was a good start down the dSLR road for me.

I don't need a second body at the moment so its just sat here doing nothing, I would like a new adjustable flash or two which are probably going to cost me ~£100, so if someone wants to make me a mates rates style offer then you could pick up then makings of a nice set up.

Oh you'll need a lens, kit lens 18-55mm can be had for ~£30 from ebay :)

I'll leave this here for a week or so and then on to ebay.

I would be interested but I have no idea how much would be a sensible offer. If you would let me know how much you were thinking, perhaps we could do business.

I like my S6500 but I'm not convinced the manual settings available are giving me what I want.

Ebay prices

Camera £60-80
Grip £50
Jessops Flash £30
Lowepro Bag £10
Canon Charger £10
Remote Release
Battery/ 1Gb CF/ strap £free to you

I bought this from DRZ a year ago almost to the day for £200, I'm also throwing the flash in which I've hardly used and cost £35 on special from Jessops, I've had a lot of fun out of it and traded the lens against one I am keeping, it'll cost you ~£30 to get a new one, I'm happy to do the lot for £85 how does that sound? The flashes I want are £60 each so that would get me on my way.

I didn't get a manual but I have a little book specifically about the 300d which is better than the manual.

I warn you, if you get the dSLR bug then this will be a slippery slope to most spending, I'm now looking at gray lenses and ones with little red rings around them and thinking 'I really need one of those!' You have been warned.

Yes, but Bigstan has first go and I don't know if it's for me. Going to kick off a thread of my own shortly (previous idea has been put to bed for now, though it may still come back).

That sounds very reasonable to me - sold to the chubby Scotsman.

I'm looking to try a bit more in the way of photography and I feel I need something a bit more advanced than the S6500 but I don't want to be spending a fortune until I'm sure I'm going to get the good out of the equipment. If I get into it, I'll be happy to spend more in the future for better kit but, in the meantime, this sounds like the very thing to get me going.

If I could trouble you for a little advice on a decent, all purpose lens to get me going, I would be most grateful.

Oh god, it really depends on how much you have to spend.

The nice thing about buying lenses is that they will work with most other Canon dSLRs, in fact its not worth worry about the ones they won't work with because they tend to be expensive full frame cameras.

You could start with an 18-55mm Canon non IS (image Stabilisation) which is the kit lens which came with the 300d, the newer versions are shipping with the IS version. 18-55mm on a crop body is pretty reasonable wide angle through to slight zoom and a good walk about lens. Next up is something like the Sigma 17-70mm which is what I have and then we're talking serious cash, probably best to stick in the area of these for the time being and trade up later

so

18-55mm non-IS £30 second hand off the bay
18-55mm IS £80 second hand off the bay
Sigma 17-70 £200+ from ebay

My choice would probably be the 18-55mm IS

Thanks Matt. I'll probably go for the cheaper lens for now as I've had MOT and road tax this month (amongst other things) and I have car insurance in June. Once I've got all that out of the way, I'll look at investing a bit more on better lenses.

I have an account for you in my online banking payee list but can you PM me to make sure I transfer the money to the correct account please?

Thanks Matt. I've offered to buy the lens at the asking price. I hope you don't mind but I suggested you might provide a character reference if the seller requires one since I just registered and it was my first post.

Edit: Just saw your post in the thread - thanks Matt.

Nice deal and Kudos to MB for the reference. :)

Having a poke around in there myself now. There's a few Canon bodies about at least.

Excellent. Thank you.

If you let me know the total including postage, I'll make the transfer.

Paid for the lens today - guy says he'll post it tomorrow or Wednesday, so should be snapping away by the end of the week with a bit of luck :D

I'm going to go play 'find the body' down the camera shop tomorrow and see what I get on with.

There's a chance I may go Canon, and if I do, there's a 40D body on TP for similar money to a 450D so I might need vouching services please.

Heh I'm looking for a new camerall too but I think I will stick to a digi camera as Picky has some fandangle one which I can play with if I wish :) I need something I can just whip out to take snaps of everything :D Particularly food. I've gone a year without taking pictures of food I've nommed whilst being out and it's made me quite sad!

Birthday soon... may ask for some wonga towards one :D

A box arrived this afternoon addressed to "The Right Reverend Stanley Johnson" :D Unfortunately, I didn't see the address label until the postie was on his way up the path or I would have said "Bless you my son" instead of "Thank you".

Can't wait for my lens to arrive now so I can have a play :D
