View Full Version : New amp?
So the cheap AV amp I bought a few years ago is dead and I'm wondering how much money I should spend on a new one. I've got these (http://www.crutchfield.com/p_158SAVE335/Sony-SA-VE335.html?tp=184&tab=features_and_specs) speakers that were about £200 when I bought them so the amp should be of a similar standard. Is it worth investing in a new amp for these speakers? I would eventually replace them with something better but not for quite some time. I had a quick look on Richer Sounds and thought something around the £250 mark would be nice. Any recommendations? :)
For that budget I would look second hand, specifically on AVForums. There are guys on there with far too much money. Get a look at a second hand amp, read up the specs. Ideally you would take your speakers and demo. TBH the amps that you can get for £250, the speakers will be the let down.

Cool, I didn't realise how the speakers would compare to an amp of similar price. Looks like there's an insane number of amps for sale on there!
Be warned, you may well end up spending a lot of money there :D There is a very large turnover of speakers, amps, PJ's and TV's. A lot of them are last years model or the previous generation. Best thing to do if you are not in a hurry is to keep an eye out. I got a Denon AVC-A10SE on there for stupid money. Granted this amp is pre-hdmi but if you look around there are some stonking deals.

For your budget from RS I'd be looking at this (http://www.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=SONY-STRDG820-BLK) seems to be getting good reviews.

So much so someone on another forum I use has been trying and failing to find one for about a month now :p
sorry for hijacking the thread, but similar question. which av amp. Which provides full hidef audio decoding for as cheap as possible 2nd hand.
I know the onkyo sr606 can do this and can be had for around £300-£350 2nd hand. But is their anything cheaper?
The one linked above looks like it might do full decoding (though I could be wrong as I'm not sure what you mean), and is cheaper new. If you can find one. :)
The Sony can decode all HD audio formats afaik. Quality won't be on par with a second hand Onkyo but I would suspect it would be adequate for most people who aren't anal about sound.

I've got the Sony 820 and very happy with it for the money. I had a Onkyo 506 for a week before it broke and to be honest I was quite happy when it broke down as it meant I could replace it with the Sony.

My parentals own the 606, and i've been nothing but seriously impressed with it. Stonking value for money! What didn't you like about it?
wow that sony for £220 looks brilliantly speced for the price.

606 is meant to be very good. The issue I had with the 506 was that it didn't have as many HDMI ports as the 820 and couldn't decode as many audio formats. I would have probably taken it back if it hadn't broken down as I felt I had been mis-sold the 506.

I've got the Soby 910 which I think is the model above that and it's fantastic.

I have one and I heart it muchly :) TV audio has really come alive now that I've got a good feed into it (Sky HD), and it was always great with the Xbox.

It is, which is why you'll struggle to find them in stock at the moment :p
