Some of you may remember my previous moon shots.

This is what the new camera can do hand held

Nice. All you need now is a telescope, an appropriate mount, and somewhere not light polluted, and a lot of patience. ;)

PS - This may well also be one of the first things I try. :)

Before I got my camera this is what I really wanted to do... As a bit of an astronomer - night sky shots give me..erm.. excitement. Would love to chat to people about how they do it well - at the moment my kit isnt really up to anything I dont think - but may try it one night on my tripod...

I don't really feel like i qualify to comment properly, but they still seem to have a lot of noise in them, and blacks are very murky, is it because you've cropped a massive photo down to the size of the moon in the picture? Or is exposure time a factor as well?

Actually its because this is the original

Taken hand held with a 70-200mm, the results would have been better if I had taken it at night ;D

LOL ;D

Shots of the moon are possible with fairly standard kit. Beyond that, you really need a telescope. Shooting through a pair of binoculars can be done, but don't count on getting anything worth using.

If you really want to go for it properly, then DSLR isn't the way. You'll probably get far better results with a fairly cheap telescope and a webcam, but that's no fun at all. :)

That makes more sense now :p I like the big picture anyway actually, i do love the moon some nights just walking back from work staring up at it over the meadows, something very romantic about it...

My Pa *REALLY* wants a proper telescope jobby where you can take piccies and everything... I so hope he gets one soon as he would use it all the time. Like Picky... I am completely fascinated by the night sky. I LOVE love love love love piccies of the moon and stars... makes me all tingly and happy.

*Wants to be able to take proper pics of the sky*

Love it.

Nice one Mister Matt :)

Indeed i've seen a couple of set ups with Nikon DSLRs but they tend to be very expensive, need very specific equipment and also some degree of fabrication of parts.

So many good pics of the moon on the net that to me taking one is a test of equipment rather than an attempt to produce some kind outstanding result :D

On that note - i'd expect better from a 70-200, try it on a tripod next time ~F8.

Page of stuffs taken by my work colleague: http://www.iainbyoung.co.uk/astronomy.htm

Some taken with a 10D, some with a 5D, and some with other stuff.

And here's the moon taken using a Canon Digital Ixus 400 pointing through the left lens of a pair of Pentax 10x24 binoculars.

I think the chromatic aberration on that picture actually adds to the coolness of it, Feek :D

Ooh, timely resurrection.

I did that once with a Sony P200 through Pentax 12x50s, with similar results.

However, I also did this tonight - both 100% crops

Old camera (S3):

New camera (450D + 70-300 IS):

Very pleased with that, though it might not be on quite the best settings (stopping down a bit might help). No, it wasn't the reason I got the new camera, but yes, as I said earlier, it was one of the first things I intended to try with it. :)

I'll have another go in a week if the weather co-operates, though I rather like the craters which you don't get with a full moon.

Had another go tonight but I actually prefer the first attempt (more craters). Might have a go at running the RAW file through DPP (the ones I posted above are straight from camera lossless crops).

While I was out (round the back of my block of flats), I could have sworn I saw a badger, which was rather unexpected. Knowing my eyesight I could very well have been wrong and it was just someone's pet, but I'll probably never know now. Sadly there's no way I'd have got the camera swung around and reset in time, and it was almost certainly too dark anyway.
