Right, let me get this cleared up once and for all, because I am well confused.

You can, from age 16 onwards (that age is irrelevant) ride a bike under 50cc with L plates after passing your cbt.

Then you have to wait 2 years after your cbt to take a test to ride any bike? But if you're over 21 you can take the second test straight away?

I ask because my mate wants to get a bike (well a Vespa >50cc). He's 20 at the mo, 21 in January, so what does he need to doo if

a) he wants to ride one before he's 21
b) he wants to ride one after he's 21

He doesn't have a car license if that makes a difference (road awareness and general competence aside)

cheers guys

!6 + cbt = 50cc and restricted to 30mph+ L plate, no motorway, no passangers
17+cbt = 125 restricted to 14bhp (not sure on this one) + L plate, no motorway, no passangers
17+ Motorbike test = up to 33bhp also no more than 0.16kW/kg. You are then restricted to this for 2years. After that you are on the full bike license
21+Motorbike test = ride anybike.

he can either take the bike test now and be restricted to 33bhp for two years, or take a upgrade test when he is 21 to remove the two year limit.

Or

He can wait till he is 21 and take the test.

This really annoys me. I've had a car license for over ten years but I have to take a full motorbike test to have someone on the back of my 125. I can understand not letting me have a more powerfull engine but the passenger thing is pointless. Its not really enforced either ;)

You think it's safe to risk someone else's life when you have no training on a bike.
Also if you are stopped it most certainly is enforced.
