View Full Version : Basic passworded/upload and/or online storage thing
Doing some group work and it would be helpful to have work collated somewhere we could all get to it.
I have webspace so I was thinking either:
1) make a basic passworded uploader so people can put stuff on there without needing FTP - probably hard
2) people to suggest someone who already does this sort of thing that we could just use
It's starting to get a pain sifting through dozens of emails looking for stuff
Beansprout used to run one. Don't know if he still does.
Ideally what i'm after will show the files to anyone who logs in.
ie. not just a version of imageshack that works for files more like an online hard drive that we can all access and see all the files and basically treat like a folder in windows.

How about google documents instead?
Works pretty well and the documents are only available to those on the list...
Unless you're using files other than standard document files...
Other suggestion would be to set up FTP on your webspace, password it, and only give out the password/ftp location to those you want to have access to it. Can be accessed very easily through windows explorer or fireftp :)
This'll be used for jpeg doc xls dwg skp zip rar pdf etc. etc.
Only thing about FTP is it needs to be accessed through Uni and I don't know if that will pose any usability/firewall problems.
Someone would have to tell me exactly how to get that set up too :p
The aim being when someone thinks 'damn, what were the measurements on that section again' they can go to the file space, look in a folder called drawings and find the measurements, rather than trawling through 5 weeks of emails with 6 different updated versions etc.

Looks like google documents is primarily word docs, html, txt, rtf, excel and presentations...
So not really perfect for you!
You could always ask the IT bods at your uni if access to an FTP (for coursework!) would be allowed... You never know, they may even help you to set it up :D
Like I said, Beansprout:

:)
50Mb limit, I might grab him on MSN as I can see 50Mb being eaten in about 2 days :p
There are plenty of free php uploader scripts out there, you could grab a basic one and lock it with an .htaccess, or something like this (http://www.maianscriptworld.co.uk/free-php-scripts/maian-uploader/free-file-upload-system/index.html), which has built in user control (not tried that myself, just a google result).
Something like that any good?
Possibly. Blighter hooked me up though, so i'm good now.
Can you not use dropbox? www.getdropbox.com
There's a client for Doze, Mac and Linux and you've got 2GB to play with. If you all set up accounts, you can all "share" the folder with the documents in. It even keeps old revisions of files so if somebody cocks one up you can grab an older version. As you save a file on your machine, it's uploaded to the server and then updated on everybody elses machine. There's also a web interface so you can access the files wherever you are.
I use dropbox so I can work on files from home and also share some work files with my bro. It works a treat :)
Dropbox is awesome, I use it between my desktop and my laptop.
