Had a bit of a wander along the Ouseburn in Jesmond Dene, just down the road from where I live this morning and took a few pics with my new (to me) 300D.

I've picked out a few of my favourites and would be interested in people's opinions. All images have had a little tweaking but nothing drastic.

Not sure which of these two I prefer

Can you tell I like waterfalls? :D

Obviously, I'm still finding my feet as far as creative photography goes, so I would welcome some constructive criticism regarding composition, content, post processing etc.
There are a few more in the Windows Live album located here (http://cid-98e928ba55284d30.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Jesmond Dene). You can click on the photos for larger versions.

Thank you for looking :)

Hmmm. That's odd. I can see all the photos on this machine but when I log in on another machine I can only see one too

I'll try to fix it.

Edit: Damn it, I can only see one on this machine now - bloody Google Albums. I'll host them somewhere else.

There, that seems to have fixed it.

Lets have a look at the settings you used if you have them, I don't have an EXIF viewer at work :)

1 is the best composition for me but the sky is a little blown although this is hard to avoid without a graduated filter with that much sky in shot.

I see you have an Japanese Knotweed infestation

Settings as follows:

#1 - Aperture = f5, Shutter speed = 1/250s, ISO = 100, Focal length = 24mm.
#2 - Aperture = f10, Shutter speed = 1/15s, ISO = 100, Focal length = 18mm.
#3 - Aperture = f22, Shutter speed = 1/3s, ISO = 100, Focal length = 21mm.
#4 - Aperture = f8, Shutter speed = 1/50s, ISO = 100, Focal length = 47mm.

I was basically playing with settings to see what gave the best results. It'll take me a long time to get used to deciding for myself rather than just switching on auto and letting the camera do it.

I might have a play with the sky in #1 in Photoshop - I'm not happy with it myself and feel it spoils an otherwise nice photo.

Composition wise Stan, I think you've done well on one and four :)

I know nothing but 4 seems to draw you in, This must be good. ;D

On 4 you are just on the border for hand holding the camera shutter wise, its good practice to keep the shutter speed above the focal length you are using to avoid shake :)

Composition is a bit of a challenge in the Dene. It is a heavily wooded area with lots of undergrowth and the preferred maintenance policy seems to be one of minimal intervention. It's very difficult to apply the rule of thirds without filling the shot with loads of unwanted vegetation. It's a little bit ambitious for a beginner but it was nearby. The weather is supposed to be better tomorrow - if it is, I'll probably take a trip along to the coast and hopefully have a bit more open space to work with.

Good tip. Thank you.

I was going to take the tripod with me but decided not to - I wish I had now.

You can always pump the ISO up a bit to give you a faster shutter at the same aperture :). Do you have ISO set to auto?

No.1 pic is good, could use a Natural Grad filter so the sky is not washed out.
Maybe a slower shutter speed to get the water fall more misty effect.
It's all about playing around with the settings on the DSLR !
