Evening... my dvd burner has been making coasters instead of Win7 RC all day.

I've noticed that after the failure, the drive also seems to go missing from my computer.

Any ideas what might cause this?

I'm currently trying to figure out the model number so i can update drivers & firmware.

How old is your drive? What software are you using to make DVD?

If you're still having lots of trouble I can post you a copy of the DVD :)

They're commonly available *cough* elsewhere *cough* if you need them.

As for the DVD issue, sounds like it's locking up. One of my old drives did that. Could be that it needs cleaning, or it could be the drive or data cable are kaput.

My DVD drive will no longer write CDs but is perfectly happy writing DVDs...

How's that for strange!?

Probably a problem with the laser. Had a similar problem on an external drive - it'd read DVDs fine but not CDs. Turned out that a common fault on that particular model resulted in the CD laser burning out.

My laptop drive doesn't like reading DVDs unless I hit it.

They're separate lasers aren't they? Not that strange to think one died before the other.

Yep, multiple laser diodes in a single package with a single lens.

Well that's not as much fun :(

I've bought more DVD writters over the past 4 years than i have the bloody media that goes in the damn things. I suppose when you pay £20 per unit, your not going to get the quality and extended MTBF.

cheers guys... i assumed it'd be the drive's age, think i built this thing in 2005 so it's getting on a bit.

Guess i'll have a look for a nice new HD reading, SATA drive.

and as for the RC, used the bootable USB stick option like i had to when i had the same problem with the Beta. thanks though Aboobie
