OS X Mail client & Mobile Me

On my Dell Mini 9 I'm running OS X which I updated to 10.5.7 this morning.

Since the update Mail.app has decided for me that I must have my Mobile Me email account configured. I don't want it there! I only want my Exchange account and before the 10.5.7 update that's what I had and I was happy.

It lets me remove the Mobile Me account but as soon as I reopen Mail.app it comes back. Grr.

Looking in System Preferences / Mobile Me I don't have it set to sync anything related to mail. Mail.app lets me remove the Mobile Me account but once I close and reopen it, the account is back.

I know I could remove my Mobile Me account to work around it, but I want my calendar, contacts and keychain to sync so I'm not going to do that.

Any ideas?

Failing that, how's about some suggestions for an alternative mail client? I like Thunderbird muchly, but it sucks at handling IMAP accounts.

Can you blat the mail preference file manually and see if that helps, it sounds as though it's dragging the info back from somewhere.

I tried that and it didn't work. Even after deleting the pfile as soon as I opened Mail.app it added the Mobile Me account even without me having an internet connection.

Sounds like Apple have made the choice for you - as they're prone to do sometimes. Short of finding a new mail application, one option might be rolling back Mail.app. Not a particularly pleasant idea but I've had to roll back drivers before and I wouldn't expect the procedure to be hugely different. Don't forget to roll it forward again before applying the next update though or bad things will probably happen.

Rolling back apps is a sod in OS X so I'll most likely just install Thunderbird and deal with its crapness at handling IMAP accounts.

There is one more option of course, which is a second account on the Mac. Thunderbird is still most likely the better option.

I hadn't thought about that. It's definitely an option but I think I'll go for Thunderbird instead unless someone knows an OS X mail client that copes well with IMAP accounts?

I know you can disable accounts within mail.app, can you not just disable the account but still leave it configured, or is that what it's re-enabling?

I can't disable it ether. I go though the motions and it ignores it. I can disable other accounts though.
