just noticed that i've only got 9gb free on my 'media' partition of 800gb.

For a while I thought i'd just buy another spinpoint F1, but thinking about it just now, maybe an external drive would be more worthwhile.

A Tb would be plenty, and I've found a Seagate thats compatible with eSATA, USB and Firewire just to top it off.

Seems fair enough. You need to remember that this costs £200 not £100. It's upto you but 1Tb is a frightening amount of data to lose without a backup!

Granted they are only usb2, but they are used one as a NAS and the other as an offline backup. For streaming films etc higher than usb2 isn't required. If you are going to be routinely dumping large amounts of data than the higher speed could be useful.

eh?!? am i missing something on there... i read "capacity 1Tb" and a cost of "£99.99"

True about backups though... but i don't really have backups of my current Tb.... i have no viable way of backing it up though.

The cost if you wish to run a backup is £200. Then you can operate them as a father, grandfather config. The grandfather is the drive that remains in the box, in the anti-static bag. The father drive is the one that is routinely used as a NAS as you suggest.

When you make a large change to your father drive, you take the grandfather drive out and update its contents. There are risks like power spikes if you both have them in etc.

edit:- For myself when updating the archive drive I unplug the NAS drive, thus removing the chance of it all blowing up. The frequency that you do this is upto you.
