Righto.

Birthday this weekend (woo woo) and my folks are looking at giving me some wonga towards a new happy snappy digi camerall.

My previous one was PERFECK! Canon IXUS v3. Took wooooonderful photos, simple and quick to use, took some filums (not massively important but I have managed to get some funny videos in the past 7 years) and managed to survive me for ages (and the beach, and being dropped down a flight of stairs, and in the sink, and dropped on nights out at uni, and more beach, holidays galore etc). I've probably managed to take thousands upon thousands of photos (mainly of food ;D)... it's fantastic.

But dead :(

It started dying last year but now 100% doesn't work :(

I really don't have... much money at all at the moment. I *should* be getting paid by Clintons soon but I'm not holding my breath.

Sooo. What do you recommend and where do you reckon I can find the best deals?

What I would like it to do:

1. Take photos. (duh :p ;D)
2. Have one of they rechargable batteries jobby (not like standard AA Batteries stuff)
3. If possible.. take some film? Not overly worried if not but would be nice :)
4. Be in the £100 - £200 price range! (the lower end would be good but I don't want super trash!)

That's it!! Nothing else! Simple simple simple!

I would like to stay with Canon because it was awesome but there's loooads out there! So thought I'd ask you peoples :D

Fankoo for your help in advance :D

IXUS 90

You can't go wrong with them if you want a point and shoot which will fit in a pocket and they have all the things you want. I'd be inclinded to send your old one back to Canon and see if its a simple fix though.

Yep IXUS 90/85/80 or older ranges are allllll good. I've got the 80, and it's amazing at point and shoot drunken nights out etc... Just perfect :)

Matt - as cool as they are I won't touch AA rechargables with a barge pole! They drive me properly insane!

Never thought of that MB....

.... that's quite genius of you....

*bows to the genius that is MB*

We've not had problems with our rechargables, especially since we bought that charger Mark recommended

Ansmann Energy 4 - to save you from looking.

They are heavier than equivalent Li-Ion packs though, so there is some justification for Pheebs choice. :)

Sticking with the IXUS range you know and love makes sense to me.

It's me being a grumpy person Matt saying I hate them :p

Something about battery operated items which drive me nuts. First, you have to figure out how to open the darn battery section. Then you have to fudge about trying to get the batteries out (sometimes this annoys me as much as when a yoghurt pot bursts open and flicks goo at you). When you've got them out, you have to find replacement batteries which aren't duff. After about 5 attempts to find a set of batteries which aren't duff from the man drawer and still managing to be not successful, you open your new packet of expensive batteries which spew out everywhere in the man drawer of batteries you were just looking in and then you've lost they ones too.

Eventually, you find batteries which work! WOO HOO! You then have to figure out which way up they go and ultimately one gets jammed in wrong. Cue sitting around for a while trying to shake it out/crowbar it out/toothpick it out/knife it out etc. Once in all is dandy... but... you can bet your bottom dollar the next time you're on hol or away with the camerall the batteries will need replacing and you'll have to fudge around finding new batteries to go in them and inevitable lose the expensive batteries you bought in the first place because they're small and stupid and and and..

I hate them :p

Battery operated items need to be banned to room 101!!

Bin the drawer, get a couple sets of Eneloops and a decent charger. Job done. :)

PS - Alkaline AA batteries should be used in cameras only as a last resort IMO (they don't tend to last).

I can't think of any camera i've used in the last 5 years where changing the batteries wasnt just a case of slide the cover open, tilt the camera so the batteries fall out, put the new ones in according to the little picture on the cover and close it again :p

Other than Canon, i've been very impressed with all the Samsung compacts i've used, Fuji are pretty good, Panasonic can be very good but worth checking reviews, Sony are good too.

Heh, it's a big fat no no for me Mark :) Thank you for the idea but I genuinely hate batteries :) I will definitely be sticking to a rechargeable jobbies!

lol

Just spoke to Canon... :

Me: "*blah blah blah* ...so yes! I'm just curious as to how much it will cost me to repair?"
Lady: "What model is it again?"
Me: "A canon IXUS v3"
Lady: "Pardon?"
Me: "Canon IXUS v3... I hope that's the model number... there's a serial number too.."
Lady: "Are you serious? Canon IXUS v3"
Me: "Yup!"
Lady: "Wow! That's an ancient camera you have there!"

lol!

They no longer can get parts for it... and it sounds like it needs a new lens! Soooo we're back to buying a camerall ;D

Poor baby camera! It lived a fantastic life in a sock and survived pretty much everything so I think it's time to lay it to rest!

*edit* please don't take offence to my dislike for batteries! I just really hate them! It's like... french knickers vs thongs. Both do the job, just one gets right up my arse :p

Personally I'd recommend the Panasonic DMC-FX33 - it ticks all the boxes... except for being a Canon!

Mine has lasted the past 18 months with no issues at all, even with the cake I got in the protective shutter at the front. Battery lasts a good long while too.

Looks like it may have been replaced by the DMCFS3 though for about £110-£115.

I'm not very organised and any rechargeables I locate are usually dead because I din't put them straight in to charge the time before :o

Did Daniel Craig know about this? :p

Fair enough though - I've gone back from AA to Li-Ion for my latest acquisition so I have nothing against either.

I'd also recommend the Lumix as well as the Canon IXUS range, i think my mum has the FX1 and its much more solidly built than the canon, yet more expensive. But worth it as an investment for the long term i guess. Totally impressed with the pictures her little camera produces, and if it wasn't for being able to use CHDK on mine, then i'd see no reason why not to have hers actually :p

*wonders whether she can do this now with the whole people demanding monies from me which... is crazy*

My answer would be the same one you gave me, but I suspect you know that. Best get that sorted first if you can. :(

If you want, I'll see if the battery in one of my old cameras still works (or if I can source an after market replacement). It's not spectacularly great, but I'm sure it'll do as a happy snapper for a while. That way you've at least got a camera until you can afford a better one.

Aww thank you Mark but I've survived without my one for about 6months odd now :) I won't be buying anything at all without being 100% certain about monies :) No wais I'm going in debt. Noooooooooo way.

It's been sat on a shelf for about three years. Better someone uses it. I've got more than enough cameras now. :)

It's been powered up and taken a shot. Motor sounds a bit manky so I'm not sure how long it'll last (I don't recall it ever being particularly quiet so this may be normal). Battery now on charge to see if I can get any juice into it.

It's a Konica KD500Z. 5MP. Very much a happy snapper. And no AA batteries. :)

lol @ batteries ;D

Heh. I needed a giggle :) Thank you!

Honestly though don't worries! I won't be going anywhere to happy snap if I have to pay this guy anyway ;D

Hahahahaha...

.... :(

Non-AA battery charge seems to have taken. Not sure how long it'll last, but it worked for the five minutes I was playing with it.

Functionally everything works. Motor is a little loud compared to modern cameras, but seems OK. White balance was a little off but I've had that problem with the camera before and it's correctable either with camera settings or later.

I think there might be another battery for it somewhere. No idea where though (small things get lost in this house).

Anyway, I wouldn't blame you for hankering after something much newer, but if it'll get you out of a bind for a while, then please have at it. If not, I'll chuck it in the for sale thread for a suitable donation to some worthy cause.

Just to reassure you, it ain't likely to fill my pockets with lolly if I try to sell it elsewhere - there are none for sale anywhere on eBay right now. I could try to sell the empty box on eBay for £5.99 (I kid you not - someone is trying this right now). I bought it in 2003 for muchos wonga, but I got royally screwed over by the shop that sold it to me so probably paid too much. Replacement batteries go for sub-£10 if needed.
