Huzzah it werks!
Arguably the most important event of the year for gamers. Thoughts? Speculations? Post em here!

Modern Warfare 2 that is all ;D
then again there are quite a few good games on the list there.
I expect Sony to have the batter show this year - you just feel they've got a lot to announce. A cheaper, no-UMD PSP would be really big news I think, ditching retail would appeal to lots of devs/pubs. They'd need a new slew of games to announce to go with it as well, plus there's bound to be some unexpected PS3 titles as well.
I'm sure Microsoft and Nintendo will have plenty to announce though and a lot of it will be pretty exciting stuff - XBLA on the new Zune/maybe WinMo (Live Anywhere was shown in 2007 iirc, yet to materialize)? Motion control? New Mario/Zelda titles for the Wii? Maybe even a hardware revision with more storage and dvd playback (we know that's coming, more a case of timing).
MS will probably have some non gaming announcements - the rumoured UK partnership with Sky was rumoured and announced today, I imagine they have something up their sleeve for the US as well.
Exciting stuff :)
For those who haven't seen the sky stuff btw: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/360-gets-sky-tvs-sky-player-in-uk
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gamesgear/0,39029441,49302415,00.htm
Good case for an Xbox in the bedroom ;D
Nice to that Sony are having the fair share of exclusive titles nowadays.
Arkham Asylum, God of War III & Modern Warfare 2 in no particular order please :)
I've not noticed OnLive making an appearance - surprise surprise.

I'm fairly sure the videos shown in the mass effect preview trailer (linked in the op) are all rendered in game. Thing is i'm under the impression that the PC and 360 versions are being developed in unison this time around so i couldn't say which platform they are from.
First big leak really, via Qore, UMD-less PSP is real - PSP Go!
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/koller-psp-go-is-out-this-autumn
"It's a 3.8-inch screen, it's 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000, 16 gigs flash memory, Bluetooth support and all digital content so the UMD drive goes away so it's going to be something a lot of consumers like - download straight to a hard drive," he tells viewers.

I didn't like that design at all, but then i saw how utterly tiny it is and it grew on me a little. Image for comparison:

It apparently weighs less than an iphone too, so might not be too uncomfortable to hold.

I don't know if anyone here is interested in PC gaming but quite a few of my mates are working on a game called APB (http://www.apb.com/) which will be showing at E3 and should be quite big.
Realtime Worlds made Crackdown, and I loved that, so I've been keeping an eye on it :) Some speculation APB is coming to 360, which I would enjoy!

I always thought ABP was coming to 360
EDIT: Could really do with lovefilm integration with xbox live ;)
So in case anyone missed it elsewhere. Due to a 'big last minute surprise' the conference is starting 5 minutes early....
Heh, marketing chess. It's like a fake encore.

hah 5 minutes early??? oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh :p
makes no difference to us ;D
Sad that Mass Effect is 360 exclusive for the time being, i was hoping for a PC release at the same time :(
The Sky on Xbox thing is quite interested but personally I'd be far more interested to see if this paves the way for a similar addon to Windows Media Center.
Providing Sky via WMC would be a no-brainer in my view. The vast majority of people with media center PCs are using them with Freeview due to the difficulty of piping a Sky or cable feed into it. To provide a system where Sky's extended programming is available to them over IP, either as a subscription system or on pay-per-view, would be a very useful addition and could seriously push uptake of WMC. Wouldn't hurt as another string in the Windows 7 marketing bow either.

Nowhere has actually said it is definitely isn't going to be released on the PC later as far as i can tell, i just stuck it in 360 exclusive as it was in the multiplatform section but only stated 'PC and 360'. I made the original op for the console section so they typically don't care about the PC :p.
In fact, from what i've heard/read, the PC release of mass effect could quite well be simultaneous with the 360 release. There was also a big fat 'no comment' on the prospect of an eventual PS3 release of all things! Keep in mind EA now own the devlopers of mass effect (Bioware?) which is what gave birth to the PC release. Hopefully now that they're owned by EA from the beginning we can expect ports much sooner.

Half Life 3
Episode 3 has been a long time coming so me thinks there is a new source engine on the horizon. I'm just guessing :)
Well, it looks like Halo: Reach is a game, as there's an achievement page for it:
http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/kotaku/full/~3/JUwpU1k1Iq4/achievements-reveal-halo-reach-joy-ride-shadow-complex-and-more
First non-Bungie Halo FPS?
Crackdown 2! By Ruffian, and has some non-human inhabitants, nice trailer.
Looks like an exclusive L4D sequel on the way...
Reach is a 'top secret' Bungie game. Teaser trailer, no idea what it is, but you'll get a MP Beta code if you buy ODST.
Relatively long Alan Wake gameplay demo - worth a look when it surfaces.

Cheers for the updates Daz. Sounds like a good show so far.
Bah, facebook on the dash. I'm sure some of you will like that :p
I'm not posting everything btw, mostly just the unknown stuff :)
Screenshots from supported games posted to FB. That's quite nice.
Hideo Kojima: Next 'major' Metal Gear Solid (MGS: Rising) in development for 360. NOT Solid Snake this time... well, at least he's not the protagonist I guess :p
"Daz doubles his postcount in one day" shocker. ;)
Motion Control camera peripheral confirmed.
[edit]
:p
Nice tech demo. Things you wouldnt think of, like scanning in your own skateboard for use in something like Tony Hawk, and general console voice control ('video chat bob'). Definitely worth a watch this one.
[edit]Spielberg is producing a game for it.
[edit2] Maybe not actually, but he does really like it apparently!
Sounds pretty gimmicky to me :/ I'm sure some will like it but I guess I'm more of a traditionalist/lazy gamer that likes to sit down with a controller :p
Edit: Only skimmed through my twitter but not actually heard anything that's made me think OMG cool yet. :/ Just lots of sequels!
It's clever tech, the key will be in the implementation. The camera recognizes your face, and automatically signs you in, which is... well, cool but not terribly useful :p
But I just want a controller :p I don't want countless peripherals!
*grumbles about bloody mainstream gaming ruining everything* :p
Peter Molyneux's doing *something* with it. Doesn't really look like a game..
... just showing off experiments Lionhead have done with it.

01-06-2009, 20:20
I want modernwarfare 2 stuff!!!
The 'Milo' demo was very good. Lionhead are going to show it behind closed doors, will look forward to what those people have to say about it.
[edit]There was a gameplay demo, nothing really uber about it but it did look good :)
Well, nothing really Megaton in terms of game announcements (though Crackdown 2 is awesome news imo - no dates or anything though), but that camera was better than I was expecting. Just have to see what they do with it.
The general lineup was excellent though I have to say. Plenty to chew on!

I'll keep an eye on gametrailers later and see what comes appears.
I haven't watched anything yet but plan to later. It seems a bit underwhelming tbh :/
They named 7 sequels, a MGS game and a Halo game, and Alan Wake.
I'm not saying sequels are bad, I enjoyed Crackdown and Left 4 Dead, and loved CoD4. But it just seemed a bit predictable and unexciting.
I'm not overly fussed about social networking stuff on my 360, only the games.
L4D2 is November 17th :)
In conjunction with the Microsoft press conference unveiling, Valve has provided additional Left 4 Dead details. First, the new melee combat options. We saw the chainsaw teased in the trailer, but players will also be able to wield a frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and additional blunt-force objects. Valve has also detailed the new AI Director 2.0, which will not only affect how many of the undead you'll be tackling at any given time, but will also dictate weather effects, world objects, and pathways provided to the players.
Sounds like fun!

The EA conference starts in 20 mins. I'd expect some Mass Effect lovin' for all you normandy junkies, see the op for a link to the live feed.
I thought it was generally a bit meh tbh. Alan Wake and Forza 3 both looked fantastic, but that's just it, i knew they'd be fantastic. It was nearly all sequels, all the sequels to games that interested me looked great, all those of games i didn't care about looked meh. There wasn't anything new to experience, no surprises.
The eyetoy thingy looked better than the Wii, but i've lost interest in that type of game interaction, the Wii has shown that the software just can't be advanced enough to deal with all the interactions you would want. That wierd kid app also looked scripted, as in, his behaviour was scripted with certain key moments where the user was prompted to interact. Time will tell with that one but given Peters previous reputation for exaggerating his products to hell and back before release i'm leaning towards it being nowhere near as good as he promises.
It certainly wasn't last years conference was it (FFXIII, GoW2, NXE, Netflix). The camera was a great tech demo but does the market want/need it? Need to see the games.

It's massively multiplayer focused.

Looks like a wii clone to me :/ Technologically it seems impressive but I really hope that's not the future. I like having a sedentary hobby, if I'm going to jump about, I'll go out.
L4D2 doesn't really seem worth a whole sequel - about enough content for an expansion at best IMO.

great news!
Just off to watch the Alan Wake stuff.
New Rockstar title: Agent, Playstation Exclusive.
Thought we had a big megaton there! Final Fantasy XIV, PS3 exclusive, launching in 2010...
... it's another MMO. Was almost worried there :D
Sony demoing a new motion controller - Wiimote mark 2. It's an 'engineering prototype'.... everything feels thrown together at the last minute but I cant imagine they put this together just because of what MS did yesterday.
Tech itself doesn't look as good as Natal, but the demo was fun.
The generation is becoming peripheraltastic.
Sony fanboys going mental over the conference but it was nothing mind blowing, a lot of 2010 games and GT5 still not release date.
Both consoles have some tops games but was hoping for a price drop for the PS3
They wont do that until TGS imo - slim PS3 out at the current, or higher price point, current model price drop in time for Chrimbo. They just have to do it this year, you need the consoles to sell the games.
And yeah - GT5 without a release date is a non-announcement - if it was this year or early next year you'd think they'd say. Fiver says we get a date during E3 2010.
Similar showing to MS on the game front, especially in terms of calendar 2009. Big PSP push as well - though I'm not sure how pricing the PSP Go higher than the current model is smart, you'd think they'd be targetting DS territory.
I thought everyone knew about the Square MMRPG PS3/PC exclusive. Apparently it's 'won' E3; bizarre.
In truth I thought both MS and Sony had very good conferences. Neither had earth shattering announcements and the exclusives kind of balanced each other out. It's good to be the owner of either/both platforms. I think Natal edged it in terms of potential (and presentation) and I do come away thinking MS still have more in reserve; Sony have shown all their cards now and there was nothing from Mystwalker/Rare/Lionhead & the new MS Halo team.
Yeah, plus the 360 has been out longer so its not going to have as much content as the newer PS3.
Alan Wake was impressive as well.

For me it's been:
Technology:
Microsoft > Sony > Nintendo
Games:
Sony > Microsoft >>>>>> Nintendo
Presentation Skills:
Microsoft>>>>> Nintendo > Sony
That sony motion section was just painful to listen to. And the Gran Turismo PSP translating was so utterly dull.
NokkonWud
03-06-2009, 11:06
For me Microsoft took it on the games side of things, but I think everyone knows why I would say that. There were a few interesting things too, Left 4 Dead 2 being Xbox360 exclusive and Natal (Although I don't like the idea of games on it).
Never actually watched the presentations though, mainly because I hate the arrogance Sony usually show and their constant usage of 'numbers' which mean nothing to us and Microsoft put all the good stuff readily accessible on Xbox Live (which they did superbly again).
It was all very predictable though, total lack of new IP's that are interesting barring Heavy Rain, especially from Nintendoh who once again underwhelmed.
What I will say is that for every extreme Sony push to give us something new it's answered with interest by Microsoft. You show God of War 3, we'll show Halo 3 ODST and then show a teaser for a further Halo game, 'Reach'. Sony show a new motion controller, Microsoft show Natal which blows it away. Sony show a none release date GT5, Microsoft show Forza 3, etc...

Seeing as i play as many 360 titles as i can on my PC, the whole exclusive malarky just serves to confuse me. I just ignore it and check wikipedia :p
Not saying the terminology it right or wrong btw, just that it doesn't really help me much :/
For me Microsoft took it on the games side of things, but I think everyone knows why I would say that. There were a few interesting things too, Left 4 Dead 2 being Xbox360 exclusive and Natal (Although I don't like the idea of games on it).
Left 4 dead is a 4 hour game. The first one is nice and all that but it should be a £19.99 game. Its a decent enough game to play a few times in co-op then it gets dull. Versus mode is too slow.
L4D2 should just be an add on pack instead of another £39.99 game.
Forza looks great, hopefully as I'm a SP gamer the career is a bit more interesting.
Rockband is my main game I'm waiting for.
Assassins might be fun if it's not as bland as the usual Ubisoft fighting games.
Then again this has been the worst year I can remember for games so I'd take anything right now. Even looking through the upcoming titles for the year only a few are of real interest. Marvel Alliance, FN4, Call Of Juarez 2, Dirt 2. Just about all in the last quarter. I wish they would space titles out a bit better.
I wish they would space titles out a bit better.
As a rpgamer why on earth did those in the know think it was a good idea to release this years first 360 rpgs Star Ocean IV, Sacred 2 on the same day and Tales of Vesperia a few weeks later. Cwazy.
Then again this has been the worst year I can remember for games so I'd take anything right now.
This year hasn't been great so far and looking at my recent history of playing cheap B/C rank games from last year backs this up. Saying this Resident Evil 5 was very good and there are some great releases imminent (Sacred 2, Star Ocean, Prototype, Red Faction). Infamous on the PS3 looks great too.

You said the same thing last year and that was ace :p.
You missed Splinter Cell Conviction, Call of Duty 4, Halo 3 ODST, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Dead Rising 2, Aliens vs Predator, Prototype and Batman Arkham Asylum and of course, many more.
We've already had UFC, Skate 2, Halo Wars, Resident Evil 5 and on PS3, Killzone 2 and InFAMOUS.
It's not been a bad year, nor will it be.

I didn't forget them it's just personally I'm not interested in buying them.
I didn't get on with the last splinter cell despite the game being fantastic I just couldn't work it all out like I usually can with those games. It was a long time ago but I gave up aftre the first couple of levels.
CODMW2 I won't bother with despite loving MW1 MP. I just don't have the stomach for yet another COD campaign, it's gotten dull for me and might pick it up when it's £20 for some MP or if it has a better zombie mode.
Dead Rising I didn't get on with the controls in the first at all and the save points got on my tits. It depends if those items are fixed.
Halo ODST, your still talking about halo, your still talking about Halo, you still talking about halo ;) E3 demo looked dull and dated to me and the only reason it will sell is because it's halo.
I know everyone has titles they are waiting for but for me personally this has been a **** year, next to nothing so far. Halo wars I've played alot. It's not a great game at all, but I love RTS and it's the best one made for a console so far controls wise despite the balance having been done by 3 year old kids.
Can't comment on your PS3 games because I have never owned one. From a 360 point of view genuinely massive exclusives seem to have dried up.
They should have spent the money making games like bioshock 2 an exclusive. Hell no GRAW 3 til even march next year either. A 3 year wait between 2 and 3 :(
You mentioned I said the same last year take a look at my profile and see the games I played in 08 or last played 08. My fav from that list are WaW SP, viking, too human, NBA homecourt, Brothers in arms and army of two. I don't feel like I missed too many big hitters? Gears 2 was or still is broken.
Mind you it doesn't matter too much music games have taken over my life anyway ;D

Now you see I couldn't give 2 hoots about a Zombie mode and personally think it would be a stupid thing to do for MW2. I thought the campaign of MW1 was a breath of fresh air compared to the previous titles. It's one of the reasons I never got COD5 because I didn't another WW2 shooter, yes that isn't technically correct but for me it was a step backwards, especially after the great romp that was COD4.
Yeah I understand what your saying but the game is essentially exactly the same regardless of new or old skin. Watching the E3 demo with the guy running around in the open taking out soldiers just looks crap to me after a few years playing games with a cover system or like graw where you use modern weapons in a slightly more realistic way.
WaW suceeded in making a better SP game in my opinoon because it didn't have the crap respawning til you get to a line. Thats not so noticable on anything but Vet granted, but it ruins the game. It only happens twice in WaW and thankfully they have adopted the Waw way for MW2. I thought MW1 was extremely flawed in that respect, call in a chopper and have them respawn inside a building you have just pounded before you can enter the trigger point in the doorway. But I've always thought if you play the game on Vet and Vet alone it ruins the game for you as the flow of the game is so broken. I appreciated the game flow a lot more after replaying on a lower level.
I liked zombie mode it just needed more player slots to make opening up and covering buildings more fun.

I have to pick up on your point about spending money to make bioshock 2 an exclusive i'm afraid danny. That viewpoint makes no sense to me, why spend money on making a title that is inevitably going to exist on keeping it exclusive? A game is great whether it is available on multiple platforms or not, to limit it to one platform does not improve the quality of the product. MS should be spending more money on developing first part games imo, there are literally none, they rely wholly on 3rd party developers as far as i know. This is where sony has the upper hand at the end of the day (even if they don't exploit it anywhere near as well as they should). They have made their exclusives by owning the majority of developers that produce them.
I'm sorry if i seem agressive, i just never 'get' the concept of using money to force a title to be exclusive, it's counter productive in my eyes. If you want something to be exclusive, make it yourself or give developers a reason (other than a cash incentive) to make it so.

Because Microsoft emply a different ethos to acquiring exclusives doesn't make it any less valid and the accusation that simply 'MS throw money to get exclusives' is quite blinkered. Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Gears of War were all funded by MS in much the same way that EA Partners program works. MS have shown that simply buying good sudios (think Rare) isn't necessarily the best use of money and starting their own studios, like Spawnpoint and Wingnut), and working with, helping to fund new start-ups like Ruffian, Mystwalker and Realtime Worlds brings better returns. Recently Sony have also seen the benefits in such partnerships, preferring to work with devlopers such as Media Molecule and Sucker Punch rather than making big studio purchases.
Sorry Streeteh. I know where your coming from with Sony and Nintendo nurturing first party studios but really why does it matter, for example that Sony have an internal studio to develop singstar and MS used Inis. Also the accusation that MS use money to force exclusives is bit PSforumsish and I whilst I do think MS offer deals to promote games I's struggling to think of a time it's been done as crudelty as you imply; I know Sony did it a lot last gen though. Even the GTAIV episodes were a product of a deal where MS worked with a cash-strapped Take-2 and paid for their development.
They still have a few first party studios and they've published brought Forza 3, Fable 2, B&K: N&Bs and Halo Wars all recently.

I was a little drunk when i wrote my post above and the point i was trying to make got lost pretty badly. I wasn't trying to say buying/forming 1st party studios is the only way to develop games, but rather criticising dans comment that they should have thrown money at 2K games to make Bioshock 2 an exclusive game. I don't see the point in such acts when the money could be used, as you've rightly mentioned, to help another developer get the best out of a game from day 1. Getting games developed for your platform whether 3rd or 1st party is the ideal outcome, but i feel getting in on the ground floor is the way to go like MS did with gears or sony with LBP, to just fork out money to 'make bioshock 2 exclusive' doesn't seem like a particularly great move to me is all. It should be about more than throwing money at a developer, as MS have shown helping the development of a game from the ground up really has excellent results, an example would be gears of war which by helping with the development ended up improving their console (more ram iirc as recommended by Epic)
Ultimately MS are a business. If Bioshock 2 being a paid for exclusive would bring better returns (with regards money but also things such as userbase increases, increased brand loyalties) than investing that same money elsewhere then they would do it, simple as that.
Their ultimate aim is to maximise profit and they will do that in whichever way they feel best, whether that involves buying off exclusives or nurturing a new studio.

Well yes, i don't think anyone on these forums is deluded enough to think that these companies want to be our friends, it's all about the money. But clearly it wasn't a good financial decision to buy bioshock 2 as an exclusive as they didn't do it, thus reinforcing my opinion that it wouldn't have been a good idea. :p :D

Microsoft spend their time looking after and developing the software for Xbox360 updates and Xbox Live, which is done almost flawlessly. They don't need to develop games, they have arguably the strongest production team in Microsoft Game Studios anyway, so they just stick to trusted parties to get the work done like their relationships with Turn10 and Bungie.

Yeah, I saw :p. I thought you originally meant they were the team responsible for the development of games which Sony have done, or by buying up studios and renaming them (like Sony Liverpool).
I understand it now :p.

We're actually in complete agreement then! ;D
