Considering switching to a silver membership for a little while, but never done it before.
What do I need to do to make sure my card doesn't get charged £39.99 by MS, and that nothing bad happens to my account as I've heard a few horror stories.

Currently under Membership level, it's stating:
Xbox LIVE Prepaid 3 Month Gold Membership Card

Renews: 25/07/2009

Automatic renewal: ON

But there is a credit card registered to the account for point purchases etc.

Just a simple matter of a phonecall or ?

I'd call them Haly, best course of action.

You can do it all online now. Just remove your card and turn off auto renew.
ShopTo do 12 months for £29 with an e-mailed code though if you're interested.

I renewed mine just a couple of days ago.

£27.59 from Play.com playtrade (BuyGamingCodes) and got the code within 2 hours.

Thanks for the advice all :)

I know 12 month codes aren't badly priced, but I'd rather save the few quid for a bit until I need Gold again. :) Always plenty of places you can get a code from if you're in a hurry.

Auto-renew is what you need. You shouldn't have to remove your card details, but of course go ahead if you feel safer. :)

Looks like I'll be joining you too. I've only got a month or so of a three month sub left (I had two of these but managed to destroy one of the cards :o). I've got a new card already but there's no point activating it while the Xbox is sitting unused (don't worry, I will get back to using it eventually).

I'm of the same mind Jen, don't really think I'll need live again until MW2 is out at the end of the year :)

Thinking about it, I can always get one off work for £28 so I'd probably go that route when I choose to renew. For now, I can't really afford it and it's one of the few things I can drop without much bother.

Anyone know where the auto-renew option is to turn it off? Actually I'll probably just give them a call although it's bound to be a pain in the arse.

Yep mine runs out middle of the month and I'm not renewing. I wish it had run out in jan because I have used it twice since.

I have 15 months sitting on the shelf for when something comes out I fancy but I've pretty much turned from a MP fan to a SP fan in the 3 years I've had a 360.

Live ***** me off too much when a perfectly mega game is ruined because it doesn't have decent code or dedicated servers. So I prefer not to bother or play something 1v1 or in co-op.

Aye, I turn OFF auto-renew, was sweating over it thinking they would charge me, not missed LIVE yet will get it when I have some spare cash and the big winter games come out.

Not sure I did it ages ago. I think its on the 360 dash in the account settings.

I'll have a look there later, thanks :)
Couldn't find it at all on the site but didn't get round to checking on the console.

Neither of those are the fault of Xbox LIVE though, the bad code is down to the developers. Dedicated servers have been used on Xbox Live before, although I would like to see MS make dedicated hosting a necessary for AAA games like Gears of War, Call of Duty, Halo, Forza etc...

True, but i do feel more stringent controls on the quality of things like the netcode should be employed by MS and Sony. They've provided the tools required to create perfectly good netcodes for games but some developers just seem to keep cocking it up. One such example is SFIV on the PS3, it's just a joke and no one is doing anything about it. Not only does it affect sales, it also gives the service a bad name, everyone in SRK forums slags off the PSN now despite it being an issue with that one title.

But then in my ideal world if a developer sent a crap game for approval the console owning company would send it back and tell them to try harder. Neither are ever going to happen.

It's rare that these problems ever seem to get sorted, I've noticed it more so on Xbox360 as I have a feeling it's a lot harder to go and patch things on PS3 which would explain why so many game patches get delayed on PS3 and are also so big (I've never downloaded a patch that's taken longer than 10 seconds on Xbox360 for example). I know the Killzone 2 patch was delayed as was the original Motorstorm patch (and Motorstorm was a total **** up online at release to the point I never went back).

I do entirely agree, there isn't a stringent enough QC on the online aspects of these games before they get to shop shelves. Some games I've simply refused to play because of it, and it's staggering that some AAA games have poor online, I hadn't heard of it with SFIV on either format, but you'd know, another one would be Gears of War 2 which was a total pita in MP when it was released.

No it's not directly a fault of live but it is a pay service and they should demand a level of service from people supplying the games or use some of the £40 a year to pay for dedicated servers as you say.

Far too many mega titles have been ruined by not having this or having bad code. Or like GRAW2 where you can't find anyone in the world with a big enough upload to support half the game types. Even when 6 to 8 of us used to play of ocuk a couple would get dropped nearly every round.

Gears And Cod would have kept me going forever online but the lag makes it unplayable for me. I'd say 6 out of 10 times your fine on COD but the lag and hit recognition is so bad on some rounds you can compete, it becomes a lottery.

They should also be pounded these games makers for the standard of lobby they are making for matchmaking. The gears one is a joke, worse than even the first one. The only ones in the 3 years that I've thought work well enough are COD4 and PGR3. PGR3 was a freaking launch title and it has a better working lobby system that just about everything since.

Having not played a ps3 online does it suffer the same COD lag issues?

I've not played CoD on PS3, but it's quite similar on some titles, Resistance for one did it well (lobby), but Motostorm for example is the worst I've used. Also, the lack of free microphones really limits the whole point of lobby interfaces.

I don't like a lack of originality, GoW2 is shocking as it takes forever to find a game, annoying as the first one was fine. Dead or Alive 4 did a great take on a lobby, Call of Duty's party system and PGR3 and PGR4 as you say, were great. Lobby's on Xbox 360, from experience, over all are much better. Halo 3 also did a good job.

I'm drawing a blank, but I've not really seen many issues with LIVE and in comparison to PSN, it's definitely worth the £30 you can get it for.

Pretty much all 3rd party multiplatform titles will be the same across both platforms as Sony only provide dedicated servers for 1st and 3rd party exclusives. Racing games like motorstorm also don't have dedicated servers provided as they won't really benefit. But then games like Killzone 2 appear to do it very cleverly, from what i can tell, users can create a server but instead of hosting it themselves it is hosted by a dedicated server.

It's either that or no one has yet noticed a host advantage, i've also never experienced bad pings.

Interesting thanks, I've been borderline on buying a ps3 for ages and I was hoping the multiplayer stuff I like COD etc would have dedicated servers, then I would stop using the live service and just play those games on the sony.

I was thinking of selling my whole set up to fund a ps3 and buy all my rockband songs again. The only thing keeping me on the 360 now is the amount i've spent on DLC. I figured if I could ebay the lot including my tag and DLC I would earn enough to fund buying it again on the ps3.

It's also getting on my tits that I have a sometimes flaky adsl line and when I go offline I can't play my DLC because 5 months after a change of console they still haven't transferred my licenses :(

I would hazard it's your connection more than anything. Only problems I get are down to my Sky Router which has woeful wireless range. I've played a lot of LIVE games and I would say I encounter a problem maybe 1 in every 20 games.

And Happy Birthday dude :).

Nah it's not my connection. I'm talking about the crappy lag that everyone takes for granted in COD4. The same with gears2 and everyone accepted the host advantage in gears 1.

Stick your Graw2 disc in and search for a co-op campaign or 16 player deathmatch and see how badly that game cannot cope with that many players.

I played an awful lot of COD4 with the regulars on ocuk and there was barely a game where someone isn't getting bad hit recog. This is public matches not private.

The other night I was playing gears with Krono and Kreeee and a few others and it was interesting to hear the lag in what was happening on each others screens. People would be dead on my screen then a second later they would be asking for help of saying behind you and then curse because they died.

You can't help someone whose already dead on your screen ;D

I'd like to see game makers taken to task for releases such as PES GRAW and Gears that have bad code and are selling the game as a multiplayer game.

I actually tried GRAW2 last week, got a game straight away which was awesome, but tried again a bit later and it was dead. The game I played had 16 players though and there wasn't a problem with it... It must be fixed now.

The only truly God awful games I've played are all the PES games (except new one, not tried it) and Gears of War 2 when it came out.

I played the Darkness online with my mate, it wasn't the greatest MP game, but there wasn't an issue. Couldn't comment on a full ranked match though.

Never found how to turn off Auto-Renew on the console or on My Xbox, so I called Xbox Support instead. Relatively simple although the bloke was a tad strange. Just had an Expiration email come through so hopefully that's all sorted. :)
