hacked... but i thought it was all the same to itunes once the apps are in the directory.
its not tomtom's doing though, its itunes. happened the other day before i did anything with tomtom. damned iTunes - got rid of like 15 apps the other day :/
Tbh isn't this kinda faff expected if you're doing this though?
Er no. I've done exactly what he's trying to do on my iPhone, and had no problems at all. However, I don't use AppSync.
In view of my 100 mins train journey commute starting in the new year, i am going to get an iphone on contract...
What's the best tariff, as in value for money?
I dont call much, text mostly but like unlimited internet, and is Orange's 750mb enough??? does O2's net allow Tethering?
1) The best tariff is the one that is closest to your expected usage. I'm not being facetious.
2) If you use up that broadband allowance, I'll eat my hat.
3) No it doesn't allow Tethering, and neither does Orange's. You can pay extra for the privilege if you wish.
Ok I think I'm going to cave.
Been out of contract for just over a month now. Was going to wait until the new Android 2.0 handsets with faster processors and high res screens arrived but feel this could still be a good few months yet and I'm getting impatient. Proponents of Android always mention how much more "customisable" the system is than the iPhone but, tbh, that doesn't really bother me as I wouldn't want to customise it that much anyway. The final factor is that the iPhone will integrate better with the car system as I can get a cradle for it and I do a lot of my calling in the car these days.
So, if I decide to jump, the question is then O2 or Orange. I don't have any personal issues or preference for either network but I am concerned about O2's inferior coverage and congestion. As for Orange, the fair usage cap is a bit of a concern next to O2's unlimited usage but how much of an issue is this in reality. I believe the limit is 750MB (didn't it use to be 500MB?). How easy is it to breach this limit and what happens if you do?
If anyone here who has an iPhone on Orange can share their experiences, I'd be grateful :)
Bear in mind O2 has a Fair Usage Policy. It probably isn't that far different from what Orange are quoting - but at least they're putting a hard figure on it.
As I've said before, if you fall foul of Orange's limit (without deliberately trying) I'll eat my hat. :)
Orange is looking like a better bet than O2 tbh.
What's the best way of ordering it - just online via the website or ring them up?
Have you used either of them in your area? A year or so back I moved from O2 to Orange only to find the phone reception was a bit pants in loads of places I go so I swapped back to O2 as soon as I could.
It's worth checking depending on how your area is for coverage :)
Orange have the worst coverage I've ever known in my area. Couldn't use the phone in my house at all for the whole lifetime of the contract. Moved to O2 - full signal.
At my parents, Orange is better than O2 (borderline 3G thanks to a recent upgrade vs borderline nothing), but around here it doesn't seem to make the slightest difference.
Definitely best to check first though if you can.
Not really had any issues around here with either O2 or Orange in the past but that's only on 2G. Have no experience whatosever of 3G coverage and no way to check really.
Can anyone recommend a barcode scanner/price check app. There's a few in the App Store but the reviews are rather varied.
I use RedLaser. I can't compare it to any others but it does the job pretty well.

same
RedLaser was the one I was looking at, and the one where I saw the comments about fake reviews and the current version of the app being broken. That review itself could have been malicious, of course.

random question:
How does red laser work? How do you scan a barcode? :)
iPhone takes a photo of the barcode. :)

Doesn't even take a photo... it loads up the camera, you point it at the barcode, it recognises it and translates it into numbers, then just gets cheapest prices from Google Shopping/etc :)
I was being simplistic, but thanks for providing the full picture. :)

Ah :p I blame my tiredness!! I've done over 50 hours work over the last two days....
;)
Just remember experiencing Orange customer service is akin to boiling onesself alive in a pot. Plus their coverage does seem very dubious.
Tesco is doing a few iPhone deals I think if you want to pay more up front and less going forward or only lock yourself into a 12 month contract.
Ok, here's a question - would you buy an iPhone right now?
Want to get one but concerned about signing up to an 18/24 month contract when there'll no doubt be a shiny new iPhone model out in around 6 months time.
If I were to buy one now, is it mine to sell at any point? In other words, could I sell it in June and put the money towards the new model on PAYG, then just transfer my SIM?
Part of me says wait another six months as I've waited this long already, whilst another part of me says stop bloody procrastinating and do it! :)

That's exactly what I did, I bought in November last year and when the new model came out, I sold tmy 3G, bought a new 3GS on PAYG and moved my SIM into it.
yeah, i wouldn't sign up to a contract this far between versions. I got mine in July simply because its almost in line with the release schedule.
However, if it were just the question of 'would you buy an iphone' regardless of when a new model came out - i still can't believe how bloody fantastic these things are. (even after i slagged them off for the first two versions!)
ARGH, I don't know what to do :(

If you get an 18 months contract now, it'll take you right up to the version after next. There generally aren't too many fantastic changes from one version to the next, but if you skip a generation you'll be more likely to notice the differences in 18 months when you can upgrade to the 5G or whatever it'll be by then.
Yeah I was thinking that - aim to upgrade to the one after next in June 2011 and only upgrade this June if the new one is utterly amazing and I need it in my life :)
Does she normally bring you good phones then?
O2 and Orange signals are rubbish in my area so I'm ****ed either way! :D

Tesco?
I'd rather go with one of the more reputable companies and I can't stand Tesco :p
I wonder if Orange has improved in my area over the past years as I might move back to them if the package is competitive.

Tesco piggyback O2 :)
Ah :p

When I called their 'upgrades team' regarding my new contract (currently just expired from my 18month) they immediately said that all iphone tarrifs are completely non-negotiable. This was before I had even raised the point of competativity and the lady was so rude I'm still looking ;D
I'm happy with my iphone contract on o2, I spend the same amount as I used to for more minutes/texts/internet so it's fine really. Always keen to weigh up options though.
Vodafone says it will start selling the iPhone in the UK on 14 January 2010.

Well I've decided I'm going to go for it but am going to wait until late January for two reasons. Firstly it's coming out on Vodafone which may well be an option. Secondly I've heard a rumour that O2 will be "revising" its pricing. I realise this is just hearsay but, with three networks competing and the Christmas rush period over, it wouldn't surprise me if we get a bit of decent competition at last. Even a fiver off each month is worth having!
Incidentally, what's the deal with insurance? Never really had a phone worth enough to worry about this but an iPhone would be different. What options have people here gone for in this regard?
